The game all these months was to spare the combat ready forces, sacrificing conscripts to the Russian artillery to hold positions while the ongoing counterattacks were organized. Cynical but well thought in a sense. The problem is what happens, when Russia stops your offensives at the expense of thousands and thousands of your best men and almost the whole stock of weaponry and supplies you have been preparing for months, and they short after raise the game by multiplying their force at the front. All, while your country and their main allies freeze, you cannot hide in forests anymore and the military supplies of the West run out. At some point, something is going to break.
BTW, there was an interesting remark from Russian MFA re. the faint in Kiev that may help both understand that action and put what is going on now in Belarus in context:

We are open [to negotiations with Ukraine].
But as soon as our troops withdrew from Kiev, the Ukrainian authorities lost any interest in the talks. If they ever get ready for this, we will welcome it. At that point, the mediation efforts of all the stakeholders may come in handy.
If it turns out that humanitarian corridors for grain shipments were used to commit terrorist acts, this would raise a big question about the continued functioning of that corridors.
We did not set ourselves the aim of destroying Ukraine. What is happening today is unpleasant, putting it mildly, but we would have got the same thing a bit later but in worse conditions for us.
Sending [NATO] troops into direct engagement, a direct clash with the Russian Army is a very dangerous step that could lead to a global catastrophe. I hope those who talk about this will be smart enough not to undertake such steps.
