Argentina buys Chinese armored personnel carriers VN1

    Argentina Military: News 2204083_original

Chinese military-industrial group China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco) has signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence of Argentina for the supply of 110 armored personnel carriers VN1 8x8. The contract value is not specified, but it is reported that the Chinese side expects the imminent receipt of the first tranche of $ 6.5 million to start shipping the first batch of equipment. Purchased VN1 will equip the Argentine battalion formed of joint Argentine-Chilean peacekeeping force Fuerza de Paz Binacional Cruz del Sur, as well as the 10th Mechanized Brigade of the Argentine army. VN1 APCs will be delivered in the version of a 12.7-mm machine gun.

The agreement, in addition to the delivery of 110 armored personnel carriers VN1 from China, also includes an agreement on the organization of the subsequent assembly of these machines in the shipbuilding and ship-repair company Tandanor (Buenos Aires), which is part of the Argentine state shipbuilding and ship-repair association Complejo Industrial Naval Argentino (CINAR). And it is assumed that includes the assembly of these APCs for export to other Latin American countries.

Argentina became the second customer BTR VN1 in Latin America (and perhaps even abroad) after Venezuela, has acquired 60 machines of this type in the framework of a large contract in 2012 for the purchase of Chinese weapons for the Venezuelan marines. Supplies APC VN1 to Venezuela began in December 2014.

VN1 APC is an export version produced in series since 2009 of the new wheeled armored main Chinese PLA ZBL09. Armored vehicles ZBL09 family developed and manufactured located in Baotou (Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region) now Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Company (known as plant number 617), which is part of the group Norinco, and is also the only factory in China for the production of the main tanks.

According to the Web resource www.defensa.com, the Argentine military is not in awe of Chinese art, but the decision to acquire BTR VN1 was "political".

Pretty steep considering they're basically getting just a new FCS....they could've got brand new tanks for close to that price

Agree, refurbished Mig-29s would be much better, besides the Kfir uses American engines, they can block the sale or even the parts necessary to maintain them.

I would say the cheapest options would be MiG-29SMTs or Su-30s, but I would think that MiG-29M2s should be considered as they have a clear future upgrade path (ie MiG-35 systems and components) which can be introduced when they become available and become cheaper.

With modern AAMs the MiG would be a potent air defence fighter.

Kfir use old American engine from F-4. Iran also have them and maintain them and after all China produce WS-9 engines for JH-7, which is based on British Rolls Royce Spey engine which RAF used in their F-4 fighters.

I think Argentinian Kfirs will be equipped with old MSA radar EL/M-2032 and not AESA EL/M-2052 as most probably UK and US will not allow Israel to sell them to Argentina.

I was looking up potential alternatives and couldn't find anything around the $5-10mil price range of the Kfir, not even the yak-130.

Everything good was around $20-30mil, even the the J-10 and mirage 2000s.

And even though the Gripen uses American part as well, for some reason it costs around $70mil a pop, ....how??

"Argentina's coast guard says it sank a Chinese fishing vessel that was fishing in a restricted area off the South American country's coast. The Argentine Naval Prefecture chased and eventually sank the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 vessel after detecting it illegally fishing within the country's exclusive economic zone, officials said Tuesday. First, according to a statement from the coast guard, warning shots were fired. The Chinese vessel, Argentine authorities said, responded by turning off its lights and deliberately trying to crash. "On distinct occasions, the offending boat realized maneuvers aimed at colliding with the coast guard, putting not only its own crew at risk, but also the personnel of the coast guard," the statement said.

That's why the coast guard opened fire, Argentine officials said. The vessel sank, and four people on board -- three crew members and the captain -- were rescued by Argentina's coast guard. Other crew members who'd been on the Chinese vessel boarded another fishing boat that had been traveling nearby, the coast guard said. Argentina's foreign ministry and the Chinese consulate have been notified, the coast guard said. Chinese officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Video posted on YouTube by the coast guard shows the Chinese boat listing to one side during the operation."

Argentina in negotiations with France for A 69 corvettes

Argentina is currently in negotiations with France to receive three A 69 corvettes from the French Navy following its disposal of nine ships of the same type.

The ships under discussion belong to the same category as the French-built Drummond-class corvettes (ARA Drummond , ARA Guerrico , and ARA Granville ) commissioned in Argentina between 1978 and 1982, used during the Falkland War.

The deal is driven by a recent Argentine Navy report, supported by its Chief of Staff Julio Martinez, that determined the Drummond or A 69-type vessels are reliable, especially when it comes to the ships' propulsion system, availability rate (among the best in Argentina's entire fleet), and low operating cost.

"Jane's Defence Weekly" magazine article Santiago Rivas "Argentina interested in F-5s as a stop-gap fighter" reports that the Argentine Air Force plans to purchase in the US from 12 to 14 older fighters Northrop F-5E Tiger II, which will have at least somehow make up for the total elimination of the Air Force fighter fleet of the country that followed the withdrawal of 30 November 2015 from the fighting strength of the Argentine Mirage family of fighters. Also from the US Navy Aviation Argentines plan to purchase several decommissioned turboprop trainer aircraft Beech T-34C Turbo Mentor.

Diplomatic sources the possibility of setting up a ”logistics base or station“ in Tierra del Fuego was in the agenda when the delegation left for Washington.
