It is not the improved capability of the satellites that require more receiving stations.

The more ground stations you have all over the world the better you are able to tweak the accuracy to further improve it... no matter which generation satellite you are using.

Russian PM signed an order on establishing the GLONASS joint stock company. All shares will be owned by the state.

MOSCOW, January 4. /TASS/. Russia should develop the market of space services, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Sunday commenting on the government’s order to establish the GLONASS joint stock company.
“Russia should receive benefits from its unique orbital group … and should develop the market of space services,” he tweeted.
The Russian government’s website reported earlier on Sunday that Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev had signed an order on establishment of the GLONASS joint stock company, where the chartered capital would make 100 million roubles ($1.8 million). All the 100% of the shares will be owned by the state.
Russia’s most known satellite monitoring system - the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) was developed as an alternative to the US’ Global Positioning System (GPS), the EU’s future Galileo positioning system, and China’s future BeiDou positioning system.
At present, the GLONASS partnership comprises twelve companies, including state-controlled telecom giant Rostelecom, the Internet company Yandex and the country’s three largest mobile operators - MTS, MegaFon, and VimpelCom operating under the Beeline brand.

WASHINGTON, January 22. /TASS/. The US Federal Communications Commission is considering a plan to route 911 emergency location calls through a Russian satellite system, The Washington Times said on Wednesday.

    ©️ EPA/MAURITZ ANTIN
Russia to deploy up to three GLONASS stations in China — Roscosmos
In a proposal before the commission, the US emergency system would rely on Russia's GLONASS precision navigation and timing satellite system to locate people calling 911 from their mobile phones, the newspaper reported. Russian GLONASS is said to be more accurate than its American counterpart, GPS, which does not cover enough territory.

Where does it say GLONASS is more accurate?

Did you even read the original Washington Times article?
They wanted to use GLONASS coverage where GPS is lacking...makes sense, since the GLONASS orbit is aimed more towards northern coverage.

    Van stupidity at it again.

With chinese and eventual european and Indian sats, a device that recieves signals from all of them could be insanely accurate. Cannot wait for that time.

    F**k off TR1.

The US Federal Communications Commission is mulling routing 911 emergency location calls through Russia's GLONASS satellite system.

MOSCOW, January 22 (Sputnik) — Russia's GLONASS precision navigation and timing satellite system may be used in the US to locate people calling 911 from their mobile phones, the Washington Times newspaper reported.
Trey Forgety, director of government affairs for the National Emergency Number Association, explained that GLONASS would be required because US systems fail to cover enough territory.

"Our view is that we ought to be leveraging anything that is available to find someone in an emergency," he said.

GLONASS is thought to be more accurate than its American counterpart GPS, which uses technology on cellphones that reportedly works well outdoors but badly indoors, according to the Washington Times.

However, the plan has already raised national security concerns among some members of the US Congress.

They have warned that if it was enacted, Russia would be able to affect America’s 911 capabilities and spy on the whereabouts of first responders.
Russia has been developing GLONASS since 1976 in line with instructions from the Defense Ministry.

The system, which was launched into orbit in 1982, currently comprises a network of 28 satellites.

I read the Washington Times article. It says nothing about being more accurate across the board.

And it is well known GLONASS is more accurate in certain areas, and less in others. If you don't know the subject, don't open your mouth.

Of course the State press like Washington times.. hello....US propaganda media will try to downplay it..
Why the FUCK your LOVELY USA wants to use Russian Glonass system if they are not better than GPS?

Deal with  Russia Glonass is better and this is said by the american federal commision for public safety and homeland security.. pirat  this are not politcians dude.. but engineers who said that.. I know it hurts your pride but you need to deal with it.. Smile

take a look.. TR1 read carefully what have been told..
one more time.. read slowly..  Smile

The plan to use the Russian system was develop by a group of US top mobile operators together with Association of Public Safety Communications Officials and the National Emergency Number Association.

It is aimed at improving the ability of the police and emergencies services to locate people calling for help from their mobile phones.

GLONASS was chosen because similar US systems don’t cover the required territory, Trey Forgety, National Emergency Number Association’s director of government affairs, said.

Besides that, GLONASS is a lot better than GPS in locating mobile phones when the call is made from inside the building.

“Our view is that we ought to be leveraging anything that is available to find someone in an emergency,” he explained.

    http://rt.com/usa/225183-us-russia-glonass-911/

Isn't is funny how a Russian navigation system cover more territory in USA than their own navigation system?  Very Happy

Why would the american federal commission of Public security will want to Use Glonass if it was not better?

it is better not just in certain case but always.. in almost every way ..and reason is . because Russian network of satellites have more advanced technology ,higher resolution images and they also cover more world territory than GPS too.. and because they also travel a lower earth orbit than GPS they are actualize information faster too... ideal for close to real time actualization of moving targets... Which means is better also for military purposes for tracking
missiles trajectory ,that is more ideal for precision attacks.. not surprisingly US is also behind in cruise and ballistic missiles too.

On a side note. .is interesting the storm this news have created everywhere..  US fanboys are in nerdrage..
everywhere.. and similar to how TR1 reacted to this news.... lol1
Their response first was to deny it... and later try to downplay it.  Smile

Reading the cabal neoliberal Rusophobic Israeli Washintong Post or NewYork Times is not going to give you
any fact about anything. Funny how TR1 accuse RT of propaganda. and go a read the biggest US propaganda media of all.. lol1 It is better to read science fiction than their crap.

Christ, you love making an ass of yourself.
Do me a favor. Shut up and read the Washington Times article that the Russian media quotes. It clearly says- they want to use GLONASS in CONJUNCTION YOU MORON with GPS for the best coverage possible.

WHERE in that does it say the US gov thinks GLONASS is better than GPS? Go for it champ. Put up, or shut up.

You probably don't even understand the orbits associated with GLONASS and GPS and how that reflects on their performance in terms of accuracy.

Oh, because RT said something, it must be so! Go ahead and show me scientific proof that GLONASS is better than GPS from inside buildings.

Either way, it has nothing to do with US gov saying GLonass is more accurate....because it isn't. They are about the same, though are better than the other in certain areas (extreme norths and souths for Glonass, equator for GPS).

Nothing funnier than you Russian wannabes pulling shit out of your asses, then crying when you get called out on your BS.

Clearly says there GLONASS IS A LOT BETTER THAN GPS...
So you Sir are in BIG DENIAL..  Yes i know the huge advantage that much modern technology and lower orbit satellites provide to old navigation systems of higher altitude ones like GPS.. so take your lessons to someone else.
No offense ,but if i wanted any scientific info of anything ,you are the last person in the forum i will ask..

You guys need to calm down.

And TR-1... the article says to me that GLONASS works better inside buildings than GPS... and a lot of emergency calls come from inside buildings, so it makes sense to include Glonass signals for location.

The title of this thread is inaccurate... the public GLONASS and GPS signals are one thing, but military grade signals from both is something else...

And who cares which is more accurate... each is accurate enough ad for the Russians the most important thing about GLONASS is that when a war is declared the US military can't turn GLONASS off like they did in the conflict in South Ossetia when Georgia invaded SO territory the US turned off the civilian GPS in the region and left the military signal on so the Georgians could continue to use it to navigate, while the Russian military using civilian GPS devices got no signal.
