Too compliment the photos here's some footage of the turret, located at 1 minute in to the video:

They forgot the grenade launcher at the foreground, maybe they can replace the dual Kornets at one side, make a box behind it to store ammo.

To be honest, this RWS turret remind me on turret in German Puma IFV. I read somewhere, that this KBP turret was bad, because it have vulnerable FCS optics. I think they could very easily place armor around optics as Germans did with Puma. Placing more channels in optics take more space, so it become bigger.

Who's to say the sides and rear of the optic boxes are not protected from small arms fire? There's plenty of space to sandwich ballistic material. A lightweight hardened shell around each component of the optics system seems like a good way to go IMO.

BTW, doesn't the Puma have weight problems?

It reminds me a bit of Polish RWS, but Russian one looks more potent.

I'm not sure about optics placement, any experts could comment more about it?

My favourite position for a grenade launcher upgrade is on the BMP-2 upgrade with the grenade launcher centre rear of the turret with the ammo on the roof top and the grenade launcher able to elevate independently but turn with the turret.

I think they could very easily place armor around optics as Germans did with Puma.

The optics on the Russian vehicle seems to have armoured covers.

Placing more channels in optics take more space, so it become bigger.

Hardly fair... if the German vehicle had Kornet it would need more optics channels too. Personally I would rather have an anti tank missile able to penetrate 1.4 metres of steel armour at 8.5km and shoot down enemy light aircraft or point ground targets at 10km.

Apparently it was a human factor cock-up. RIP!

Don't want to sound insensitive, but I shudder to think how the current army is going to handle Armatas and all the new fancy stuff.
From photos in line units, some of the personnel are extremely careless with ammunition and such...

By the way, same unit managed to blow a BMP up:

Actually the next gen vehicles would be a lot harder to blow up intentionally or otherwise anyway, what with the crew compartment seperate from the rest of the tank. afaik there would be as much as 2 pro crew per Armata MBT, the others too maybe.

Austin haha Very Happy  really a good question. In Russian PVO there is a separate and elusive (to my findings) branch of army tasked to produce HQ/3D etc topographic maps of the battlefield or

area of planing in peacetime and wartime. They are to me in unknown way integrated with Russian radar troops (separate branch) and Russian missile man (SAM). I guess they also work

under Russian Ground Army/Airforce/Strategic and Navy. And what they do is described here:

First, it is a theoretical basis and practical implementation topogeodesic integration and navigation support into a single system of geographic information to support the Armed Forces at various levels of military command.

Secondly, the refinement of the structure and content of the Bank's digital cartographic information, astronomical-geodetic and gravimetric data the Defense Ministry, the development of technology of automated conversion of analog survey information into digital form, integrated presentation and problem-oriented compression processing space and terrestrial geodetic information necessary troops.

Thirdly, improvement and organization of industrial use of automated technology to create digital terrain models and the Earth's gravitational field.

Fourth, the development of methods for verifying gravity maps the territory of Russia, overseas territories and waters of the oceans.

Fifthly, the definition of geodetic points in landfills, airfields and special facilities of the Armed Forces, the recalculation of coordinates from foreign systems in the domestic system of geodetic coordinates, compilation and publication of a new map of the ellipsoidal heights quasigeoid Krasowski

etc ... etc anyway nice read ...

    That topographic work -

Is it really necessary to keep this as a military role? Can this not be done by civilian specialists working for defense contractors or the MoD?

The Russian military has been converting a lot of roles from military to civilian over the last few years.

I don't doubt it. Things are done ass-backwards in Russia all too often.

But IMO, it's a necessary change in the long run

Wow. Reason those 3 soldiers died in the tank explosion is a factory defect.
The defect was a crack in the gun, specifically in the breech.

And a nice photo from UVZ, looks old though.

    What’s Been Bought

It’s usually challenging to discover what the Russian military bought in any given year. But it’s somewhat easier now that procurement is increasing.

On January 14, Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu reviewed 2013 procurement in a year-opening videoconference.

He indicated that GOZ-2013 was fulfilled at 96 percent for RDT&E, 93 percent for armament and military equipment purchases, and 91 percent for repairs and servicing. Purchases increased by 70 percent over 2012.

    Beyond that no details.

If Shoygu’s scant and statistical, Topwar.ru’s Kirill Ryabov rescues us.

Ryabov says GOZ-2013 amounted to 1.45 trillion rubles, two-thirds more than 2012. Roughly the same accounting as Shoygu’s 70 percent. But Ryabov’s also tracked what was bought. He doesn’t give full citations for his data. But it’s a working list.

    He starts with air defense:

    6 S-400 SAM battalions.
    6 Pantsir-S1 missile-gun systems (ZRPKs).
    24 Tor-M1-2U SAMs (SA-15 upgrade).
    12 Tunguska ZRPKs.

More than 300 combat and support vehicles for the Ground Troops, including:

2 Iskander-M SSM brigades (107th in the Eastern and 1st in the Southern MD).
    54 BTR-82A APCs.
    12 BMO-T flamethrowers.
    90 Tornado and Grad MLRS.
    20 Khosta SP guns.
    40 Msta-S SP howitzers.
    16 Zoopark counterbattery radars.
    16 Leyer-2 EW systems.
    10 Redut-2US communications systems.

And reportedly more than 5,200 other vehicles and automobiles.
