leader Class .....ICE BREAKER 120MW
Looks like Russia has decided it will dominate the Arctic
https://www.world-nuclear-news.org/Articles/Russia-prepares-for-next-icebreaker-series
this beast can plough through 4.5M of ice. Perhaps they decided the budget of the Leider destroyer was better spent on this. BUT the propulsion system will also be pretty hand for the cruiser if they decide to build it.

Since the average sea ice thickness has fallen from 3 m to about 1.7 m in the last 50 years, this thing will be cutting through
any sea ice like a hot knife through butter.

Re: Icebreakers
I wonder IF they installed a large bank of batteries they could get by on a single reactor...would they ever need the full 120 MW on a sustained bases or just for a surge when they are stuck? If its the latter they could just put in a 250T 10 MWh battery that will give them 6min of full power. or heck 1000T of batteries for 25 min

The new nuclear icebreaker Yakutia laid at the Baltic Shipyard
MOSCOW, May 26 - RIA Novosti. The laying of the fourth, one of the most powerful in the world, Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker Yakutia, project 22220, took place on Tuesday in St. Petersburg at the Baltic Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation), a representative of the Baltzavod told RIA Novosti.
The ceremony participants attached a plate with the name of the icebreaker to the embedded section of the nuclear-powered ship.
Yakutia will be the fourth and the third serial vessel in the line of nuclear powered ships of project 22220. The construction customer is the Atomflot FSUE (an enterprise of the state corporation Rosatom ).
Nuclear-powered icebreakers of Project 22220 are the largest and most powerful in the world. They are needed to ensure Russian leadership in the Arctic . The length of the vessel will be 173.3 meters, width - 34 meters, displacement - 33.5 thousand tons.
These icebreakers will be able to conduct ship caravans in arctic conditions, breaking ice up to three meters thick. They will ensure the passage of vessels with hydrocarbon raw materials from the fields of the Yamal Peninsula and the Gydan Peninsula and from the Kara Sea shelf to the markets of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
The lead universal nuclear-powered icebreaker LK-60Ya Arktika of project 22220 was previously built at the Baltiysky Zavod; now, two serial nuclear-powered icebreakers Sibir and Ural are under construction there. In August 2019, Rosatom and the Baltzavod signed a contract for the construction of two more serial atomic icebreakers of this project.

Project 22220 icebreakers were designed by OSK-Iceberg Central Design Bureau JSC and are equipped with a new type of RITM-200 two-reactor nuclear power plant with 60 MW shafts developed by Afrikantov OKBM OJSC and are the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world.
The length of the icebreaker for this project is 173.3 meters, the width is 34 meters, the draft on the structural waterline is 10.5 meters, and the minimum working draft is 8.55 meters. Displacement is 33540 tons.

Tender for the construction of a new floating dock for the repair of nuclear icebreakers
According to the Neftegaz.RU news agency, Atomflot FSUE (part of Rosatom State Corporation) announced a tender for the construction of a floating dock for the repair of nuclear icebreakers. The information follows from the data of the public procurement portal.
The results of the competition are planned to be announced on July 3, 2020.
The procurement documentation says:
the right to conclude a contract for the construction and supply of a floating dock for FSUE Atomflot, the initial contract price is 4.98 billion rubles.
The dock must be made and delivered by the contractor for 29 months from the date of signing the contract.
The documentation notes that the floating dock is designed to carry out dock repairs of the 50 years of Victory, Yamal, Taimyr, Vaygach nuclear icebreakers and nuclear technology support vessels.
It will be operated in the Kola Bay area.
On the bmpd side, we indicate that the Atomflot FSUE now has two floating docks at its base in Murmansk - PD-0002 (length 206.25 m, load capacity 20775 tons) and PD No. 3 (length 173.68 m, load capacity 28,000 tons) . The issue of building a new floating dock for docking the new nuclear icebreakers of project 22220 (LK-60Ya) that are currently under construction has been discussed since 2015.
The new dock, according to the procurement materials, should have a carrying capacity of 30,000 tons and a service life of 40 years.

Following Trumps decision to ask for US plans on new icebreakers in 60 days it seems the Russian Leader is getting more publicity. Pretty comprehensive article at

Interesting... two RITM-400 reactors generating 120MW of power... their new CVNs might have three or four of those perhaps...

There's no harm in viewing & discussing ships of this category built elsewhere.
This thread should be non-specific just like the 1 on tandem/tilt-rotors.

Re: Icebreakers
It doesn't hurt to show other icebreakers, though if there are pages and pages of say American or Chinese icebreakers then it would be time to split those off into their own sections.
For now you can post any icebreakers here... but keep in mind this is the Russian thread so priority for Russian icebreakers.
And Mike... calm down... it is not the end of the world...

Just skimming through the comments on this thread it is interesting the number of people repeating western propaganda... Russia isn't moving in to the arctic... Russia is the arctic... these new Russian bases and ports are in Russia...

Back in the 80´s and earlier the interior of all russian aircraft were painted that way because some scientists found out that it is good for the eyes and nerves of the pilots.
