MiG-27K were produced well before the mid 80s- they were some of the earliest MiG-27s accepted into the VVS (and the most advanced, they went for cheaper ones after).

Yep. MiG-23MLD and MiG-27 were pretty useful in the early 1990s: low cost, loads of spares, decent avionics. It is a shame that cash strapped VVS could not keep them in service.

    Very slight correction, it's 28 Mi-35M and 15 Mi-28, total 43.
Continues active purposeful work to promote the Mi-35M in Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the CIS. Executed a contract for the supply of 28 helicopters, K-8 foreign customer [probably Iraq, although previously reported plans to supply two agreements 2012-13. a total of 24 machines]

well its been a little "hectic" in Iraq... well with the effective breakup into three states so haven't really replied here much.

just some news today that Russia delivered yesterday 6 more Mi35Ms

They damn well need these desperately now. the officer said they will be ready within a day to begin operations.

Seriously doubt it, we would know if any Mi-28s arrived in Iraq. Might be Mi-35M (considering they operate together with the Bell-407s), though the footage is too blurry to tell.

sheytanelkebir, I'd really like to know your thoughts and feelings on how the US is influencing this whole mess.
Nothing 'conspiracy theory' mind you, just what you think about Kerry's statements and his meeting with Barzani, and what was said after the meeting.

Su-24s or Su-25s , Iraq needs air cover ASAP so MiG-23/27 are out of picture because they`re out of service. Sukhois are in service and operational and can be quickly put into Iraqi service.

Igor Korotchenko says Iraq might have bought 6 Su-30K! (the ex-indian ones) Also points to interest in second hand MiG-29 and Mi-24. Belarus offers some pretty cheap and capable upgrades for all these aircraft/helos btw.
    http://ria.ru/defense_safety/20140626/1013733742.html#ixzz35lfIKhEK

Of course, it's not clear if they bought aircraft from both Russia and Belarus, the Su-30K are sort-of in the middle as they are russian owned, but are overhauled in Belarus. But until we see them in Iraq, it's just rumours.

And yeah Iraq could really use some Su-25s right now.

I would say the best aircraft would be Su-25s, but also Su-24Ms with Russian advisors.

I would also look at MiG-29SMT aircraft with targeting pods optimised to operate at medium altitudes using guided bombs... optical or laser guided.

The altitude will keep them safe from ground fire but TV guided bombs and missiles will be accurate enough and lethal enough to do the job.

Su-24Ms with the Gefest%T dumb bomb aiming computer that allows 8m or less CEP accuracy with dumb bombs from medium altitude would be a cheap safe way to deal with these invaders.

Su-25SM3 aircraft would be effective too... plus a chance to test their self defence avionics suites would be useful... and operational testing of Vikhr-M...

They should also offer armed drones for testing...

    8-12 SU 27SM

drones have been purchased, semi confirmed.
We don't need heavy airpower but drones, the heavy aircraft will kill civillians and anger them, the ground forces simply have to perform better ( aim not spray ) together with better command which will be overlooked by the USSF coming to Iraq.

Keep in mind the cowardly Wahhabi extremists love to use human shields so civilian causalities will probably inevitable, but that should be minimized as much as possible, the main strategy is to use air power to pulverize ISIS to the extent that it's weak enough so the ground forces can successfully mop up the remnant combatants!

Yes, but that's why the only things that fire in cities should be helicopters, hellfire missiles/Ataka. The fighter jets bombardment can be done on ISIS in the desert, they often spot huge convoys of ISIS in the desert, there the Sukhoi can unleash hell.

Looks like mercenary probably Russian pilots will fly those jets as theres no way Iraq can get pilots ready in a short period of time.

Yes, were exactly on the same page here, use heavy aerial power in the desert while ground forces will have to take back cities and they should probably get tactics and advice from Syria on how to successfully re-take Wahhabi controlled cities. Aerial power should be used to cut off supply lines (warfare tactics 101) coming through the desert, and eventually the ISIS shock troops controlling cities will wither-on-the-vine.

That satellite Iraq and Russia launched a while back would be very useful for finding targets and dealing with them.

Drones and helos with guided weapons would be very useful for rooting out point targets in cities, but fixed wing aircraft with dumb bombs would be ideal for dealing with heavy weapons and large enemy groups on the move...

Aircraft like Su-25 is especially useful when ground forces are attacking enemy positions... heavy resistance and the Su-25 can hit them hard... no resistance and the ground forces can move right through to the next target/ position.

    We have sources saying, SU30K, SU-27SM, SU-25.
We'll have to wait to see which one(s).

Anyway, this purchase will set the basis for Iraq's air force. If they will buy SU 30's/27's the air force will order new SU 30 or 35 instead of adding another new platform.
