first Pantsir and Igla units enter service in Iraq.

The crews were trained in Russia and performed live fire exercises in Russia before the units were delivered to Iraq.

What *can* these things do there? After all, they are going up against a force that has no organized air force... Best thing they could do is fire at coalition jets, but that wouldn't be a smart move...

these are air defence systems and only deployed in southern Iraq. They were ordered in 2012. They are irrelevant in the current conflict of course and are kept VERY VERY far away from any potential front line.

Good point, should have noticed that...  Embarassed - Now the question is.... Will they ever get used assuming ISIS grows?

ISIS hopefully isn't going to take over southern Iraq. If that ever happens then there'll be a genocide of pretty much all the shias / christians / mandeans... and some short range air defence system would hardly be on anyone's mind in that instance!

    yes indeed.

The commander of the ADC said that these units were finished in Russia some time ago, and Iraqi crews underwent training, including live fire training on them in Russia before any popped up in Iraq. So they managed to "hide" the info pretty well...

I do wonder if those desert cammo ALMAZ ANTEY 2500V4 that popped up recently in Russia are intended for Iraq? Saudis recently confirmed that they have DF21s after all...

Well, rumours seems to point they are for Egypt, but you never know. However, me i'm wary of US meddling, current government was installed because of pressure from them, considering how hard the yankees are trying to antagonize Russia these days, one can bet they try every possible dirty tricks to sabotage iraqi-russian weapons deals and cooperation.

Iraq Gets Third Batch of Russian Mi-35M Helicopters: Arms Think Tank

MOSCOW, October 1 (RIA Novosti) – Iraq's Ministry of Defense has received the third batch of Russian Mi-35M helicopters, as part of a contract signed in 2012, an official representative of the Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade (CAWAT) told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

"The exact number of helicopters in the third batch is not mentioned, but, most likely, Baghdad received four Mi-35Ms, like in the first two batches," the CAWAT representative said.

"If the accelerated pace of deliveries, which follows a request from the Iraqi side, is maintained, the contract is very likely to be fully implemented by the end of this year," the representative added.

Iraq signed a contract with Russia on the delivery of 28 Mi-35M helicopters and 15 Mi-28NE "Night Hunter" attack helicopters in October 2012.

In November 2013, Iraq received the first four Mi-35M helicopters. The next four Mi-35Ms were delivered to Iraq on June 2, 2014.

Also in June, Iraq received the first batch of Mi-28NE attack helicopters. According to the CAWAT representative, at least three Mi-28NEs were included in the batch.

On August 30, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense confirmed that it had received the second "Night Hunter" batch, which included at least three units, the CAWAT representative said.

The representative noted that because of delayed military assistance and red tape, which come amid the growing Islamic State (IS) threat, the Iraqi government has refused to sign a US proposal for the purchase of 24 Boeing AH-64E "Apache Guardian" attack helicopters. The offer expired in August.

So delivery should be soon then? (i seem to recall, someone mentioned it might be 2015)

On another note, here are a few more details about the TOS-1A deal plus spare parts for MTU-90M, PTS-4 and PDP izd.561P vehicles (are these to be delivered or are they already in iraqi service?) from Omsktransmash reports:

One thing I didn't understand in that report, first two batches consisting of 6 vehicles (I presume TOS-1A on T-90 chassis) appears to be destined for Azerbaijan, but only Iraq is mentioned as a customer.

I don't think all of those 12 vehicles are for Iraq (despite the absence of mention of another customer).

"При этом в двух первых партиях надписи эксплуатационного и предупредительного назначения указываются на азербайджанском языке"

Would be too random to have been something irrelevant in the context.

The Iraqi army(God bless them) are really purchasing the Orsis T5000, It must mean that it is a very good sniper rifle. I wonder if they will purchase the VKS Sniper rifle or the new SV-338 or the VS-121?

T-5000 is already in use widespread, the special forces mainly.

T-5000 being used recently in the Baiji offensive against ISIS

It looks like Iraq received a batch of Mi-171E helos (eight?), however the dark green cammo is very unusual (for a desert country), reminds me of venezuelan one f.e. Is it 100% conformed these are indeed iraqi, are they for night operations, and would they have the EO ball installed? Thanks.
