Russia to supply radar system for Iraqi Air Force airfield — source
The Russian equipment will ensure radar control and navigation at a distance of up to 400 kilometres form the aerodrome and instrument landing of aircraft in poor visibility conditions
MOSCOW, November 13. /TASS/. Russia is supplying to Iraq flight radio-technical support equipment for an aerodrome of the country’s Air Force, a source in the military-technical cooperation sphere told TASS on Friday.
"The supply of this equipment for the Iraqi Air Force is currently underway. The contract provides for equipping an aerodrome in Iraq with flight radio-technical support equipment," the source said.
According to him, the Russian equipment will ensure radar control and navigation at a distance of up to 400 kilometres form the aerodrome and instrument landing of aircraft in poor visibility conditions.
In recent years Iraq has been a major buyer of Russian weapons and equipment. In 2012, the sides signed a contract package on the supply to Baghdad of various military equipment worth $4.2 billion. Iraqi officials have repeatedly displayed an interest in the development of military-technical cooperation with Russia.

Reports of deal for T-90 and Mig-35 among other stuff, how reliable is it ?
Another confirmation came about MIG-35, one among many. None however are an official confirmation from MoD but they always keep those things secret, starting to look like MIG-35's and T90's are considered/ordered however. Deal (partially) on credit.

IIRC there were Mig 35 being made for an unnamed customer I wouldn't be surprised at all if they turned out to be for Irak.

Possibly due to earlier availability than Su products. Bit of a sales boom going on over there with lengthening lead times.Atakor wrote:IIRC there were Mig 35 being made for an unnamed customer I wouldn't be surprised at all if they turned out to be for Irak.

Re: Iraq turns its eye on Russian weapons
The news that leaked is that Russia has agreed to a 5 year delay in payment for a $7bn in weapons contract that Iraqis contracted for in 2014 but were unable to pay.
So now those items can be released for delivery.
They include
T90 tanks
500X Bmp3m
24X mig35
Anti tank missiles
Brm-3m
And other items.
I wonder if they reinstated the 2s19 order too.

Would be interesting if/ when we have confirmation (by seeing the gear arriving in Iraq). The last rumour was the MiGs are supposed to start arriving in December isn't it?

Russia is set to supply the Iraqi army
"Russia will supply Iraq with around 400 mine clearing vehicles for removing mine barriers planted by the Islamic State militants in the country, the Iranian news agency Fars reports. The Iraqi Prime-Minister Haider al-Abadi signed an extra agreement with Russia to supply the mine clearing vehicles to the national armed forces, an Iraqi official told the Fars agency. "On arrival in the country the mine clearing vehicles will be used in operations against the IS militants in the Northern and Western parts of Iraq," the official said, adding that the cost of vehicles will be paid by the Iraqi government later. Fars has illustrated its report with a photograph of Russia’s latest BMR-3M Vepr mine clearing vehicle, which however is not an indisputable proof that expressly these machines will be procured.
The BMR-3M Vepr mine clearing vehicle has been developed by the Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Corporation using the T-90 main battle tank /MBT/. It is powered by the V-84MS 840hp engine that used to be mounted on the previous models of the T-72 MBT. Used as the main engineering tool is the KMT-7 wheeled mine plow. Also, it is possible to fit a more advanced tool like KMT-8 or KMT-9.
The vehicle is outfitted with a radio suppression system for neutralizing remotely controlled explosive devices and with a jib crane. The vehicle maximum speed is 60 km/h, the mine sweeping speed reaches 12 km/h. The armament suite includes a remotely controlled antiaircraft automatic weapon system and 12.7 mm NSVT machinegun. Also, it is outfitted with 902V Tucha smoke dischargers. The BMR-3M mine clearing vehicle is fitted with the Contact-1 explosive reactive armor.
The BMR-3M vehicle will find an optimum application for demining operations in Iraq. At the moment the IS militants do not plant the mine field type of explosive barriers. The preferred technique now is "a mine cluster" in which self-made explosive devices and antitank/antipersonnel mines prevail. The mine barriers are usually located near the roads. In this case the least costly and most effective means of overcoming the barrier is the use of the mine clearing vehicle fitted with contact demining sweepers and protected at the MBT level."

Isn't 400 way too much for special type vechiles like mine clearing, maybe the numbers are wrong.

Re: Iraq turns its eye on Russian weapons
Would be useful vehicles to lead attacks and clear mines at the same time... I suspect a mine flail or heavy roller would add front protection from ATGMs as well...
A RWS with a 12.7mm HMG would make it a useful recon vehicle to test approaches with fairly good armour protection... I would add ARENA myself and something like SHTORA that would jam SACLOS missiles like TOW... both systems would be rather simplified without a moving turret.

News from parliament defence committee that 6-10 SU-25's are to arrive somewhere 4 weeks. If true, new built? Thought Russia doesn't retire its current Su-25s.

They must be second hand machines from somewhere, the Su-25 factory is in Georgia and afaik they are not building anything, only overhaul.

Re: Iraq turns its eye on Russian weapons
They produce the two seat models in Russia... and the best models were the Su-25T and Su-25TM that were based on the two seat version even though they were fitted with single seats.
Fitted for Vikhr missiles they would be excellent platforms to hit point targets and operate at low level in a conflict zone.
Vikhr missiles are in production so availability wont be an issue... and on the Frogfoot it could carry 8 missiles on each of two pylons with an engagement range of about 12-15km.
It could carry a range of other guided weapons too... and with a Gefest &T aiming system added to increase the accuracy of unguided bombs and rockets it would be a very potent little plane.

No doubt they will be second hand planes. But Su-25UB was produced in Ulan Ude in Russia and there is a plan for a long time to restart production of two seater Su-25UBM, which will be on the level of Su-25SM3. There is a good chance, that RuAF will slowly replace their old non modernized Su-25 jets with new Su-25UBM.

Russian newspaper Kommersant said Iraq is in talks to buy a small number of MiG-29M fighters.
"Багдад был заинтересован в дальнейших закупках вооружений, но из-за падения цен на нефть иракские военные были вынуждены ужаться в своих запросах, говорит источник "Ъ" в сфере ВТС. Но, по его словам, переговоры все равно продолжаются: сейчас они рассматривают вариант с закупкой небольшой партии истребителей типа МиГ-29М."

Re: Iraq turns its eye on Russian weapons
In 2015 Iraq was the biggest receiver of "secret code" exports from Russia. Over $1.5Bn...
what that contained who knows... but the pictures of S300VM missiles in "iraqi AD style" cammo gives hope that the 2013 statement by the Iraqi Defence Committee about "advanced missile systems costing $210M each" are S300VMs...
Lets hope that the often repeated rumours of the MiG35 are real too... though they would not be counted under any 2015 figure.

No pics yet. I note that recently opsec has improved at iraqi airports... No more leaking pics by airport ground staff.
