The engine is not the only system to smoke on board, there are also, e.g. the generators and maybe others systems whose pipes end in the funnel.

The whole ship and its air group is a messy, 3.5 decade-long work-in-progress.
But it will do for now, it's all they got.

Nothing else can produce that amount of smoke, auxilary genererators are diesels and i think their exausts are probably on sides, and are quite small compared to boilers.

Now halfway down the Portuguese coast. Could be in the Med tomorrow. Clearly they have turned the smoke generator down, no need to pretend to the world that she is on her last legs whilst way out at sea.

That's not the Kuz. It's the Gorshkov which they sold to the Indians (sadly).

From the start, it's a PESA called Mars-Passat.What are the spécifications of the AESA radar on it ? Was it here from the bigining or is it an upgrade ?
Apparently never actually worked properly, 'antennas' are supposedly slabs of concrete, though in that case I'd have thought they'd have removed them by now & put Boletus or something instead.

This is very interesting, I wonder, what the reason could be, could this be one of the reasons:
"Saudi, Qatar seek to recruit Algeria in Yemen".

Interesting. The presence of four Ka-29s is news to me.

The tug Nikolay Chiker is passing through the straits of Sicily right now.
It's safe to assume the Kuz and its task force are nearby.

I find this air group on Kuznetsov Quite interesting. There are 14 fighter jets and 18 helicopters. Strike group will be consisted by 8 Su-33 upgraded by Gefest and 4 MiG-29K/KUB. 2 more Su-33 will be for air protection. I wonder, why they send only 1 MiG-29KUB. They should send more of them as they could play a role of air command post for strike group like Su-30SM and Su-34 do for Su-25SM and Su-24M with Gefest. MiG-29KUB have multirole radar and IRST and the second pilot could work with coordination and target delivery for the rest, specially for Su-33 fighters. Most probably this job over Syria Will be done by Su-30SM and Su-34 for naval group as well.

It is probable that a valuable part of the 'training' element of this deployment will be, as you say, the interworking of the Naval and RuAF elements under operational conditions.medo wrote:I find this air group on Kuznetsov Quite interesting. Keep in mind this is Kuznetsov... not Nimitz.
The primary purpose is air defence of the carrier group and light naval attack.
They might try some land attack, but likely only in the context of testing the air to ground capabilities of the new types and probably new weapons... the MiG-29KUB will be the only two seat fixed wing aircraft on board so all training will be done with that, though its potential with two crew might of course lead them to think all the MiG-29Ks on board should be two seaters...
Should be interesting to see what they test and what they do with the carrier.
They are not likely to finish off Daesh with this group, this is for testing and experience in a realistic environment... likely coordination with the Russian Air Force and air defence forces on the ground there will also be valuable too.

Second video is interesting. To me, it is interesting that MiG29 is take off without use of blast protection plates.

It would be interesting to look at how much time it pass between a launch and the second one in stress situation, given that one of the possible, put forth advantages of STOBAR configuration is allegedly a faster launch rate.

I'm not an expert, but first I think that the skijump could be used by an airplane at a time. If you have four catapults, you can use at least two catapults at a time or in very fast succession. And if you don't have a very big flight deck, you can't move aircrafts so agile enough to supply quickly catapults or skijump. You can have skijump or very fast catapults, but for what? If you can't supply them with aircrafts? In a few words: you need a very big ship (and, I think, a nuclear reactor, for the energy for the steam or the electricity for the catapults and for the lifts ...).
