Russia plans to create an anti-aircraft defense (air defense) robot based on the Uran-9 strike robotic complex, a source in the military-industrial complex told RIA Novosti.
“On the basis of Uranus-9, the possibility of creating a robotic complex for short-range air defense is being considered. Anti-aircraft missiles "Igla-S" or "Verba" can be used as the main armament of the new complex, - said the interlocutor of the agency.
The source clarified that robots of this type can be used, including in a fully automated mode, to enhance the capabilities of military air defense, in particular, in motorized rifle and tank units.
The main purpose of the air defense robot, the agency's interlocutor added, will be the fight against aircraft and air attack vehicles moving at low and extremely low altitudes.

Russia will made air defense version of Uran-9 robot. Air defense robots will become more and more important in future wars. Air defense is always the first target of any air strikes from manned jets or from UCAVs. Robotic SAMs will prevent losses between man crews as they are crewless and they will increase protection of command posts and crewed SAMs.

The west thinks of swarms as a means of attack, while Russia thinks of swarms as a means of defence... that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the two sides...

Tests of the Marker robotic platform.

"As part of the tests, one of the wheeled vehicles made a 100-kilometer march. The time for completing this task was 5 hours and 41 minutes, during which time the platform overcame 40 kilometers on off-road (field) and 60 kilometers on unpaved and paved roads. The movement was carried out in a completely autonomous mode. The functions of the operator were reduced only to marking the start and finish points on the digital map, as well as several intermediate points to ensure the unambiguity of the specified route" – the Foundation for Advanced Research explained.

The press service said that the vision system installed on the platform, based on the work of neural networks and including a set of different sensors, independently built a three-dimensional map of the area. This allowed the robot to independently overcome obstacles and choose the optimal route.

At this time, another robot "Marker" conducted tests to launch drones, launching 20 multicopters into the sky, the Foundation for Advanced Research said.

It was reported that a module with drones can be installed on the "Marker", which ensures the launch of a large group of unmanned aerial vehicles in autonomous mode, each of which can perform tasks both as part of a group and individually.

The possibility of controlling the robot from the intelligence, control and communication complexes in service with the Russian army was also tested. "The experiment showed the possibility of significantly simplifying the control of robotic complexes through the use of standard means of combat equipment" – the Foundation for Advanced Research said.

This year, for the first time, the Ministry of Defense will use combat robots of the Uran-9 family in the West-2021 exercises. The novelties will be used for the protection and defense of rear and special facilities, as well as for the fight against drones. Robots "Uran-9" will detect the enemy using optoelectronic systems and radars and destroy him with airborne weapons, or transmit information to other units. Based on the results of the maneuvers, a final decision will be made on the place of these vehicles in the combat formations of the troops.

    Guard and shoot down

Sources in the military department told Izvestia that a fundamental decision on the participation of the Uran-9 reconnaissance and combat robots in the West-2021 exercises has already been made. The task of these systems will be to guard warehouses, gas stations, communication centers, command posts and other facilities. The robots will detect the enemy using optoelectronic systems and radars and destroy him with onboard weapons. The second task for "Uranov" will be the fight against drones. They will detect vehicles and either shoot them down or give target designation to air defense systems.

Exercise Zapad-2021 will be an important test for the Uran-9 combat systems. According to Izvestia sources in the military department, based on the results of the maneuvers, a decision will be made on what tasks and in which units and subunits these robots will continue to perform. At the end of August, a subdivision of these machines was first used in special exercises at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod region. According to the Ministry of Defense, then they were first used in the combat formations of units in the conduct of defense. The ministry noted that the exercises became a control stage in checking the readiness of troops for joint strategic maneuvers "West-2021".

Robots of the Uranus family are the latest Russian development. Sapper "Uran-6" and firefighter "Uran-14" are already serving in the army. A mine-clearing robot was used to clear the area after the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, and the military regularly dispatches the Uran-14 to where fires break out.

The first samples of Uran-9 ground combat systems entered the army two years ago. The novelty was presented to the general public at the parade on May 9, 2019. Later, these combat vehicles were tested in Syria, according to the results of combat use, they were finalized.

In April this year, the chief of the General Staff of the Ground Forces, Vasily Tonkoshkurov, announced that an experimental unit had been formed on the basis of one of the department's research centers. It included five complexes - a total of 20 combat vehicles. Over the past months, the military has been practicing the tactics of using robots in the combat formations of troops in the offensive and in defense. And at the Army-2021 forum held in August, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the purchase of a batch of military Uraniums. True, the military department did not disclose the details of the agreement.

“The Defense Ministry is serious about the system of autonomous and semi-autonomous weapons,” military expert Vadim Kozyulin told Izvestia. - Somewhere in 2015, they began to actively fund the robotics development program. Great progress has been made in recent years. We see that new patterns are being created both on land, in the air and under water. The global trend of recent years is the intellectualization of everything that can only be automated and put on the basis of artificial intelligence.

And Russia has already reached the forefront in many areas here, the expert added.

    - “Uran-9” is one of such examples, when our developers worked very quickly, tested, discovered, noted certain shortcomings for themselves, which is not surprising in the combat conditions of Syria, and successfully solved them. The combat complex, tested in battle and in exercises, is practically ready for adoption, - he said.

    Master on all trunks

The Uran-9 complex consists of four tracked combat vehicles with remote control, a command post and transport for their delivery.

The small robot weighs 10-12 tons (depending on the load). The performance characteristics of the novelty were not disclosed. Known only for the weapons complex, and it is very impressive. The vehicle is equipped with Attack anti-tank guided missiles, a Shmel-M jet flamethrower, a 2A72 30-mm automatic cannon and a 7.62-mm machine gun paired with it.

The operator can remotely control the robot from several hundred meters behind it, including in cover. He can monitor the situation with the help of several cameras installed on the machine.

“Uran-9 is a modular design that can carry a whole range of light weapons, has anti-tank and anti-aircraft capabilities,” said Vadim Kozyulin. - Theoretically, it can act autonomously, but so far, as I understand it, no decision has been made on this matter, the world treats this issue with caution. Many countries are demanding in principle to ban autonomous weapons, and it is difficult to determine which decision will ultimately be taken. Just right these days by videoconference at the UN in the Same

Combat robot Uran-9 unit will be active in Zapad-2021 military exercise. It will be used for protection of important points and for air defense against drones. I wonder if they will be used to fire on actual target drones and how well will they perform. This is interesting concept to fight against drones with AD robots. They could save lives for many AD crews.

The quality of an air defence network is not just its ability to shoot down threats, but to also see targets too... adding drones and other platforms able to contribute target information into the IADS will make it rather more formidable and more difficult to survive in for any length of time.

The point is that such a robot is not a challenge for Russia. It is only a challenge in the minds of western
Russia haters who are mentally challenged themselves.

Wouldn't be surprised if there was a Chinese copy of that thing years ago anyway.

No point in Russia making a copy of it. Or rather, demonstrating a copy of it. While the technologies involved should of course be mastered, you have to be original and find new applications of them to wow the public and potential clients with. If people want a robot dog then they'll go to Boston Dynamics.

Are you both sure that's not just a vismodded Boston Dynamics Spot or the Xaomi Cyberdog?

Nope that's Chinese Unitree Robotics (guess its Aliengo model) with logo of Russian distributor 3L and Synergy Technical College/University . Perhaps Synergy added something form algorithms or software? dunno

No point in Russia making a copy of it. Or rather, demonstrating a copy of it. While the technologies involved should of course be mastered, you have to be original and find new applications of them to wow the public and potential clients with. If people want a robot dog then they'll go to Boston Dynamics.

The Platform-M combat robots were used for the first time at the Zapad-2021 exercises.

Motorized rifle and airborne units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation used Platform-M combat robots for the first time at the Zapad-2021 exercises. The tests were conducted at the military ranges Pravdinsky and Khmelevka in the Kaliningrad region.

This is reported by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Robotic complexes, whose weapons consisted of machine guns and grenade launchers, operated in an imitation urban environment, engaged in the destruction of militants. In addition, they were used to make passes on the enemy-mined terrain.

Together with these robots, the Orlan and Forpost unmanned aerial vehicles operated, which conducted surveillance and helped in detecting targets for tanks and artillery calculations. With their help, it was possible to observe several objects simultaneously, including disguised ones, without being noticed.

In addition to the Baltic region, the exercises were held in several regions of the European part of Russia, as well as at five Belarusian training grounds. They will last until September 16. About 200 thousand servicemen of Russia and the Republic of Belarus take part in them.

Completed robots: the Ministry of Defense will purchase additional complexes "Nerekhta"

The Ministry of Defense will send Nerekhta combat robots, which were first used in the West-2021 exercises, to protect strategic facilities. Relatively small devices are capable of patrolling the territory, detecting intruders at a great distance at any time of the day. And if necessary, they can be used as a combat platform. According to experts, in recent years, Russian engineers have made significant progress in the development of ground-based robotic systems.

    Unmanned security guard

A fundamental decision was made on additional purchases of Nerekhta combat robots for the troops, Izvestia sources in the military department said. They will protect strategic and critical facilities. Previously, the new technology was successfully tested in the Strategic Missile Forces. Now it was decided to expand the scope of their application, the sources specified.

On September 13, Nerekhta, along with other robotic systems, took part in the main stage of the West-2021 strategic exercises at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was the first time they were used directly in the combat formations of combined arms subunits. During the development of the defense, the heavier "Uran-9" destroyed the armored vehicles of the advancing simulated enemy, and the "Nerekhta" were used for reconnaissance and fire support of the subunits. The samples exhibited for the exercise are equipped with a 12.7-mm Kord machine gun and an AG-30M 30-mm automatic grenade launcher.

As noted in the Ministry of Defense, "Nerekhta", in addition to performing reconnaissance and fire missions, can also adjust fire, deliver equipment and ammunition. The latter is especially important at the front line: the routes along which the supplies are delivered to the forward positions often pass through areas of fire.

"Nerekhta" is a relatively small apparatus 2.5 m long and 1.5 m wide. Despite its modest size, its chassis can take up to half a ton of payload. The complex develops a speed of up to 32 km / h. The robot is unable to act and open fire on its own. It is constantly under the remote control of a human operator.

On the basis of the robotic platform, several modifications have been created for different tasks. In addition to the fire support complex, which can carry a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun and a 30 mm grenade launcher, a reconnaissance apparatus has been created, where the weapons are replaced with appropriate equipment. And also - a transport platform that can be used to supply units, evacuate the wounded and other tasks.

Electric motors make the robot quiet. Combined with the low profile, this becomes an important advantage in scouting. The device has proven itself well in the protection of important objects.

Since 2016, an experimental batch of complexes has been operated in the strategic missile forces in the Irkutsk region. Robots are regularly tested in special exercises, during which mobile soil complexes change their locations. "Nerekhty" equipped with optoelectronic equipment, a thermal imager, a laser rangefinder and other means are used to protect the areas where strategic objects are located, as well as to patrol the routes of their advance.

    - In the Strategic Missile Forces, such robotic systems can be used for reconnaissance of the routes of movement of mobile missile systems. They are also designed to protect the coast and important facilities, ”military expert Vadim Kozyulin told Izvestia. - "Nerekhta" is a serious combat robot, it works as a strike system - you can put machine guns, grenade launchers on it.

What test awaits new unmanned systems

Now in Russia there are many similar developments, every manufacturer of large weapons and light weapons began to develop such systems. The fact that the Ministry of Defense is taking them into service shows that the corresponding technologies are very actively developing in the Russian Federation, the expert added.

“At one time we were far behind in this direction,” he reminded. - When the Americans and Israelis were already actively using this kind of system, we did not even take on them yet. Now we have caught up with the advanced countries, and in some places we are even ahead. There are already proposals for the foreign market. Rosoboronexport offers foreign customers the Uran-6 demining robot. This is a promising market, and the fact that our armed forces are accepting such devices into the troops plays into the hands of Russian manufacturers and exporters in the development of this direction.

Izvestia has already written that the West-2021 maneuvers will become an important test for combat robotic systems, in particular, the Uran-9 strike. Based on their results, a decision should be made on what tasks and in which parts and divisions the robots will continue to perform. Strategic exercises are held from 10 to 16 September at training ranges in Russia and Belarus. Almost all military units of the armed forces of Belarus and a large grouping of the Western Military District are involved in them, including the forces of the Baltic Fleet, airborne units and special forces. The maneuvers were the culmination of troop combat training over the past academic year.
