I tried to upload a picture of my back but for some reason I can't, but you can't really see anything wrong with my back its so mild, some doctors didn't even think my spine was curved, only the one who was a trained spine specialist saw I had it

It's a basic medical check. If something is n't right they send you to a specialist in a hospital or something. But if you won't say a word, they prorbably won't know Actually the most serious parts are an eyesight and narcotics tests.Hello, I was wondering If someone here who has served could go into detail of what happens during the medical check ups prior to joining.

What kind of jobs would a foreigner do
Hello everyone,
Just curious, what sort of jobs would a foreigner be doing when he joins the russian military? I am guessing he won't be put into a front line unit until he is a citizen or can be trusted. What regiment/unit can I join as a foreigner? And what are my chances of promotions after the years and after citizenship?

Well, one can always have General janitor duties...and try to convince people to call him the General...how cool would that be?!
Then one could call home, and say he's a 'General' in the Russian Army!
Sorry, not really trying to make fun of you, just needed a bit of a laugh...this Ukraine thing is making me feel a bit edgy...
Sorry again, I'll let people in the know answer more seriously.

No, never served. Actually, I did everything to avoid the draft (back when it was obligatory here)...but I know a thing or two because of interest, and have trained a bit with a mate who's special forces here. Way too fat now (and need to get back in shape)...a regular armchair 'General' here

And perhaps later on you'll share some stories from your Spetsnaz unit here.
Looking forward to that.

Thanks so do they do any of the stuff like making you bend over to touch your toes and trace your spine and all that weird kind of stuff? Also how hard is it to get a contract with the army? Are they always looking for new people?

May be some basic tests, if nothing changed since I was in a conscript age.so do they do any of the stuff like making you bend over to touch your toes and trace your spine and all that weird kind of stuff?
Yes, the Army basically always seeks for personel. Still it dosen't mean they grab everyone who can't escape, as it's a bit different from the conscription. I don't how do they sort out foreigners, no russian citizen can sign a contract without serving as a conscript (a studing as a cadet in case of an officer, as a cadet takes the oath and is basically a private soldier). Foreigners still can't serve as a conscripts though so this can't be a limiting factor

Well I read according to some new amended law that foreigners can sign a 5 year contract and be offered citizenship after 3 years. I am just curious as to how hard it is to get a contract, I think I would be a good candidate and as I am a realist, I have traveled the world and if I wanted to do something I would go out of my comfort zone to do it. Like some foreigners might think oh it would be cool to join the russian army, but its crazy so I wont do it, where as me I will actually go out and do it, I am quite smart even though I have no qualifications because I was expelled from school during my GCSEs and also I am very fit and want to do nothing more with my life than to serve and fight for what I believe in. So all Im saying is hopefully they will realize how dedicated I am and I am not just some guy who's watched one too many movies or some shit like that.

What's with the international influx of people wanting to join the Rus Army?
GarryB, maybe you should merge all the threads into one.
Seems every week someone form somewhere (other than Russia) want's to join...perhaps it's time for a dedicated thread, rather than have multiple ones every week. Would save people time, I think as many of their questions have already been answered.

"The Russian Armed Forces are accepting foreigners of any country to their ranks. Under a plan, posted on the ministry’s web site in 2010, foreigners without dual citizenship would be able to sign up for five-year contracts – and will be eligible for Russian citizenship after serving three years. According to the amended law, a citizen of any foreign country aged 18-30 with a good command of Russian and a clean criminal record can now sign an initial five-year contract to join the Army" i quoted an entry from Wiki (i know i know, wiki has a bad rep but this sounds credible)
having looked that up, its everyone's free will to do with their lives as they see fit. but i would never recommend the millitary to anyone.
Millitary life is indeed an unique experience, but with that experience there can come a lot of deeply negative impacts too where you will be confronted with i honestly do not wish to anyone. at one point or other in any millitary service there will be an event that goes against your own morals and value's.
but its the millitary, its a huge goverment controlled organisation that really does not care about your "feelings" of a soldier. you where hired to do the job as you are ordered to and agreed on in your contract and when they want your opinion they ask for it, witch is...like never . thats the job of any millitary of any nation: to execute given goverment orders and achieve set mission parameters.
and then the problem lies with if you can still look into the mirror the next day and like what you see and how you go forward from that point on with your life. joining the army is a very important decision that regardless of how it ends will impact your life for your remaining lifetime and the decision should not be made lightly.

And what do you want of them? To give soldiers flowers and sweets? I don't really get it about soldiers feelings

The problem is that he want to go to the different country with different language to do the hard job not much men nowadays are eager to do because it's rather simple to just sit in a warm office and do nothing. And you are talking about "govermant control", "feelings", and some kind of moral choice.

i was being slightly sarcastic in the reply with the examples. you might overlooked that part. i still mean the opinions i stated. no hard feelings if you did. misunderstandings are easily made on forums.
and for your information if you missed my intro. witch i understand too, as i do not read everyone's intro post either, i served in the millitary 2005 to 2014 at the Airborne troops of my nation. and i was not in some magazine counting socks either but front line action. the actions of my Nation aside, i think im allowed to say by now i know the internal workings of the millitary by now and what it means to be a voluntary proffesional soldier. im not asking for any credit or something. just pointing out here your example of "sitting in a nice warm office and do nothing" certainly does not apply to me after dodging damn IED's and bullets in Afghanistan. no offense taken from my end of course. i honestly feel you where just unaware of all that.
and you rather respond to my reply on a simplistic black and white manner of view. if you got yourself millitary experience about the millitary system. than by all means im all ears .

Make sure to pick up on all of them GazB we've had like 5-6 over the past 1 1/2 years from the Cristiano Ronaldo lookalike to 1-2 British blokes to the Bosnian dude and then that pther guy with the irregular spine..
Merging all those threads into 1 will pretty much give plenty of information for anyone interested w/o them needing to repeat all the same questions every single time.

This thread is for those wanting information and advice regarding joining the Russian Armed Forces.
