On Sunday, July 28, the small hydrographic vessel for the Navy Vasily BUBNOV of project 19910 was launched at the October Revolution Shipyard (Blagoveshchensk) on the Amur river.

    Finally!
Today, the Vympel shipyard (part of USC) in Rybinsk launched the STUPINETS missile boat of Project 12418 (Tarantul class).
Note: There is one more ship of that class still building in that shipyard.

The upgraded missile boat with factory No. 01301 will get the name of Stupinets in honor of the city of Stupino in the Moscow Region.

Quite negative article about the tarantul class small missile ship.

Yes, it is not the most advanced ship and probably it is not worth to produce more since they are basically smaller and less capable versions of karakurt and buyanM, but if the 2 hulls were sitting unused in the shipyard, why not?

By the way, this sentence in the article does not make sense for me.
two completed, probably mainly to keep the Vympel Shipyard alive, and strengthen the small Caspian Flotilla, are likely to remain the only ones in the Russian Navy.

Vympel shipyard is capable to build ships larger than the buyan or karakurts, so if was just for keeping it alive, it wouldn't need this order. Furthermore they are fulfilling also several other orders for small military ships and for civilian ships.

It's an all out fest in the western news media to trash anything RUSSIAN - no surprises there.

These boats are still relevant - even the ones with the Moskit missiles could pose a major threat in a coastal environment where they would be difficult to spot.

I think it is a flawed design. It was meant to be a high speed missile boat. So they should have kept the gas turbine unit. This could have been done with a gas turbine and two diesels. Or they could have kept the dual gas turbine setup.

The original had two boost engines and two cruise engines. Two shafts. One boost engine and one cruise engine per shaft. The boost engines had like 8.2 MW (11000 hp) power each, and the cruise engines 3 MW (4000 hp).

UEC Saturn makes the M90FR turbine with 20 MW power. A single turbine could replace the two boost engines. Another option would be to keep the existing layout and put two M70FRU2 turbines with 8 MW power as boost engines. The cruise engines could be just regular diesels.

They probably used the M507 in order not to have to design a new propulsion system. This way they just use the same propulsion as in the Karakurt but it is just two shafts instead of three.

For air defense they could have used the Ghibka.

The medium sea tanker Engineer-Admiral Kotov, launched on December 5, became the third in the Project 23130 series. According to experts interviewed by Izvestia, such auxiliary vessels are necessary for the Russian fleet to solve problems in the distant sea and ocean zone. The tanker can simultaneously refuel three ships while underway.

The medium sea tanker "Engineer-Admiral Kotov" was launched on December 5 in St. Petersburg, the Russian Defense Ministry reported. Its construction was carried out by the Nevsky Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant, which is part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

The military department reported that the tanker is designed to receive, store, transport and transfer various liquid cargoes for the fleet: fuel oil, diesel fuel, motor oil, aviation kerosene, fresh water. It is also possible to transport dry cargoes, including various technical and skipper's property, food products.

    — The event is very important for the Navy. The advantage of these tankers is the ability to simultaneously refuel three ships on the move. Its main purpose is to support long-distance voyages of ships, — said the head of the auxiliary fleet service of the Main Command of the Navy, Captain First Rank Anzor Dandamayev.

The tanker can transfer and receive liquid cargo from one ship to another without mooring to another ship, and also do this in a wake manner. In addition, it can simultaneously supply fuel to three ships moving from it at a distance of 50 to 100 m.

These are the largest vessels ever launched in the history of the plant, which celebrated its 111th anniversary in 2024. The tanker was named after hereditary shipbuilder Pavel Kotov. His grandfather built the cruiser Aurora, his father built battleships for the Baltic Fleet, and the engineer-admiral himself participated in the development of the nuclear missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy and the world's largest nuclear strategic submarine Typhoon.
    Supplies on long trips

Russia does not have many places on the world map where our ships can replenish supplies during long voyages, military expert Vasily Dandykin told Izvestia.

    — We currently have such bases in Sudan and the Mediterranean, — he specified. — Therefore, combat ships without an auxiliary fleet that provides them with fuel and food are not functional. A displacement of 12 thousand tons is enough to provide everything necessary for two or three ships of the Admiral Gorshkov class — a first-rank multipurpose frigate with guided missile weapons for long-range sea and ocean zones. It is gratifying that the program is being implemented, because the combat readiness of our fleet directly depends on it. And if it is made for the Northern Fleet, it means that it has enhanced ice protection, which will allow it to break through ice of a certain thickness without the help of icebreakers.

As the expert noted, the possibility of transporting aviation kerosene on tankers is very important.

"Each of our frigates has a helicopter. But in the future, when our heavy aircraft carrier, the flagship of the Russian Navy, Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov, goes to sea, we will need more than one tanker," Vasily Dandykin concluded.

We have problems with the auxiliary fleet - the tankers are quite old and, of course, the launch of another one is a great help to our Navy, Ilya Kramnik, a research fellow at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia.

    — The Engineer-Admiral Kotov will be needed to accompany ships on long voyages, — he noted. — It will provide them with fuel. First of all, we are talking about ships of small and medium displacement: the tanker itself is quite small. During a long voyage, it will be able to refuel a group of corvettes and frigates several times or a cruiser once or twice. We need many more such ships. I hope that we will get to the point of building large ships of complex supply, like the Soviet Berezina. They will be in demand if our military leadership decides that the country needs an ocean fleet with large ships.
Fleet of 'floating gas stations' being created in the Arctic

Earlier, Izvestia wrote that the Russian Defense Ministry plans to create a fleet of "floating gas stations" in the Arctic , which will include the Engineer-Admiral Kotov. The first vessel of Project 23130 was the medium sea tanker Akademik Pashin. On January 21, 2020, the flag-raising ceremony of the auxiliary fleet of the Russian Navy took place on it in a ceremonial setting.

Vasiliy Nikitin became the second medium sea tanker of Project 23130. It was launched in 2023.

According to the plans of the military department, tankers will not only supply fuel to warships at sea, but also provide resources to coastal infrastructure in the Arctic. According to the former Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, Admiral Valentin Selivanov, the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy has been chosen as a priority for replenishment with tankers, since it is the largest and most active. Its ships go to the Mediterranean Sea, to the shores of South America, and along the Northern Sea Route to Cape Dezhnev.
