Re: Your favorite music
Ever since I can remember I listened to music I hear in movies, TV shows or video games. That is how I pick my music.
I listened to metal in high school but I greatly diversified since then. Every genre out there has several songs I like. Lately I've been dabbling with J-pop.
But this here is my favorite song ever. Ashes by Embrace. It is from TV show Veronica Mars:
Also, watch Veronica Mars, it's awesome!!!

Kipelov - Unconquered (official video)
and my quick translation
Sky of Baltic is pressing by lead , blocade is holding town by the throat
Bronze Horseman and Angel with cross are delivering shells to the battalions
Stoned lions are jumping from their places to rising for attack with solders
Brutal revenge of rebellious. Offensive. The collapse of darkness!
Unconquered! Passed througth the hell
Unconquered! Hero city- Leningrad
Unconquered!- to the all times
Unconquered! Peter's city
Life is writing dates of death by weak children's hand on the shroud of snow
What's will happend with you ? Can you able to stay as human?
Don't give up and don't loud cry ,killing for bread crumbs
Can you able to keep light of hope under german bombings
Blackness, fragile ice of Ladoga, kids leaving in the water
Metronome will chime mournful count of all fallen in years of blockade
The nerves of the city - to the heart of earth , to find force and revive at string
Bronze Horseman is flying to the victory by bird beyond the oblivion

Re: Your favorite music
Needa share this.
Can you believe this was actually RELEASED as an album in 1968? Sounds like 5 years old kids playing three different songs at the same time. If it was just three girls with no talent trying to make music, it would be comical - but their story has an element of tragedy.

Re: Your favorite music
Band's name: Wolf's Hunger
Country: Serbia
My...translation of a sort:
Russia
From the Far east to the cold North
there my second Motherland lays
where winter bites everything
there is the one and biggest
Russia!
Where horizons do not have end
where snow is eternal
where all swords and spears get broken
my second Motherland
Russia!
As their own always took us
Serbian refuges always embraced
far away blue circle with star in it
my second Motherland
Russia!

Re: Your favorite music
This is for yesterday 7 May, the day of Điện Biên Phủ victory
Note: I tried once to translate the lyrics into English, but my English translation is very clumsy and funny, so I strongly suggest you listen to the music to catch the theme and the spirit of the song, and use GG trans instead.

Thanks very interesting.
Are there songs made by solders about war or maybe made by local singers and become popular?

My other favorite!
Apparently Israel got the tune and made Hatikva as their anthem. Superb music by Smetana.
Here's a historical performance, before Czechoslovakia dissolved:
and then my other fav is Bartholdy

Many. As far as I know, you can say most of the authors' profession are both musician and soldier. They were educated (by family) as future musician, but then they participate in the Patriotic War as soldier, and they continued to compose music while serving in the battlefield.

Yes, the first sounds I remember ever since I was a kid (actually my parents was playing it before I was born).
My uncle played on guitare and trumpet.
God mother used to play on flute.
And me ? I'm musicaly deaf but still love to listen to classical music. My first touch with classical music was a Chaikovsky's CD which I used to play while hoovering the house every Suturday
At the moment I'm at work but will listen to Ma Vlast and Felix Mendelsson later on.
Thanks for good tips
Mine are just music fanatics, think my mon did piano younger, but they put on classical and operas mostly. I remember when they got their first CD player in the 80s and packed shelf with tons of the three tenors and crazy stuff like Soviet CDs by Melodya company, Mussorgsky, Tsaikovsky, etc. Still keep them in the house, and still working
My recent present to my folks for their anniversary was 2 tickets to Bolshoi for Sleeping beauty. They loved it.
My young interests were concentrated on making instruments, like crossbows, arrows and play war in the neighborhood.
I wasn't into music more than listening

I discovered the music of Alfred Schnittke two years ago while watching the closing ceremony of Winter Olympics in Sochi. So far, out of what little I have listened of his creations, here's my absolute favorite:
