Brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbas
Despite the fact that at the moment the Ukrainian military is not taking active offensive actions in the Donbas, regular shelling of the territory of the DNR and the LC is going on. A significant grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is concentrated in the region. It is necessary to disassemble in detail its composition, as well as the actions of specific compounds in the most intense areas of the contact line.
At the moment, the grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbas is as follows: on the territory of the LC, units of the 54th Mechanized and 10th Mountain Assault Brigade are stationed. In the area of responsibility of each of the teams are the most "hot spots" in the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic. The 54th OMBR takes up positions in the area of the settlement of Zolotoe, where in February of this year the Ukrainian Armed Forces went to a serious aggravation of the situation. In the run-up to the presidential elections in Ukraine, brigade military personnel intensified artillery and mortar attacks on the positions of the People’s Police of the LPR. Video recordings of strikes taken in “UAVs” are regularly published in the Ukrainian media and in the Ukrainian segment of the Internet. However, retaliatory strikes on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also led to an increase in losses in the brigade. The 10th Mountain Assault Brigade holds positions at another “hot spot” in the republic, in the Zhelobka area. There, in February of this year, there was also an increase in shelling from the Ukrainian side, it was in this area that the majority of cases of use of the Stugna anti-aircraft system were noted. on the territory of the Republic.
In the DPR, the 30th Mechanized Brigade operates, reinforced by the Azov regiment on the Debaltsevsky direction, part of the brigade’s forces maintain positions on the northern approaches to Gorlovka. This section of the line of contact is one of the most intense. Gorlovka has long been a bone in the throat for the Ukrainian army, subjecting it to the outskirts of regular artillery and mortar shelling. On the southern approaches to Gorlovka at the end of March, the 53rd Mechanized Brigade replaced the 58th motorized infantry unit in rotation. The 53rd OMBR includes the notorious battalion "Aydar".
The 93rd Mechanized Brigade and 57th Mechanized Infantry Brigades are stationed in the Donetsk direction, here the areas of the Yasinovatsky checkpoint and the Avdeevskaya industrial zone remain the traditional “hot spots”. The 93rd OMBR regularly tries to test the defense of the DPR People's Militia. Skirmishes using small arms, mortars and anti-tank systems practically do not stop. In this area, the APU even tried to use armored vehicles to attack positions of the NPT. So, at the end of March, it was destroyed during the detonation of the 93rd OMBR on an anti-tank mine BRM-1K. In addition to the connections of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, in this area there are units of the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps of the Right Sector * (DUK PS), which occupy positions in the Butovka mine area.
It is worth noting that the militants of this organization are not nominally part of the Ukrainian armed forces and their dead are not included in the general statistics of losses. This circumstance contributes to their use in the “hottest” parts of the contact line. The 24th Mechanized Brigade is located in Marinka on the southern approaches to Donetsk. This team from the Lviv region is considered one of the most combat-ready in the APU.
A battalion-tactical group (BTG) of the 81st Airborne Assault Brigade and two BTGs of the 35th Brigade of Marines are stationed in the Volnovakhi area. In this area, in March 2019, they replaced the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The merger of the marines was formed in November 2018 and is currently undergoing a kind of “run-in” in the Donbas.
The 79th Airborne Assault Brigade is reinforced by the BTG of the 80th Airborne Brigade. Along with the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there are units of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army of the Right Sector * (UDA PS). UDA fighters, subordinate to Yarosh, are actually subordinate to the SBU.
In addition, on the territory of the DPR, there are units of the 3rd Regiment of the SSO of Ukraine, with a total of up to the battalion (detachment).
Thus, at the moment, the forces of seven brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are currently deployed in the Donbass, as well as three battalion-tactical groups reinforced by militants of the Right Sector, totaling eight settlement brigades. Of course, in fact, brigades are not fully staffed, in some units the proportion is 60-70 percent of the staff, but in itself the size of the grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a significant threat to the normal existence of the Republics.
Contrary to the Minsk agreements, the Ukrainian military does not divert heavy weapons from the contact line and regularly exposes the territories of the DPR and the LPR to shelling. The actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine actually disrupt the peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbas, which inevitably causes new human sacrifices.
