signing of mig35 contract is mentioned for 2016. that means first delivery to ruaf in 2018 or so. pakfa is on course to be quicker with deliveries to ruaf in 2016, thus pakfa should become first ruaf fighter with aesa radar.

Doesn't really matter, either way the "Ruaf" gets AESA, and that is great! The real question is how long until every Ruaf "fighter" jet has AESA...

Delays are possible... the PAK FA does have a rather complex sensor array that includes 5 separate radar arrays, with three in the nose and two over the engine intakes... the former being X band and the latter being L band, plus the ESM suite has active jammers in the tail... I suspect the software needed to make this all work together would be quite complex.

In comparison MiG had an AESA to show the Indians a few years back, so while Russian AF requirements might be more ambitious I suspect the work on the MiG AESA is in a more advanced state.

That is what I figured... The MiG's avionics are already/almost completed, versus the FA's still in dev./ testing avionics.

And China, India are negiotating to purchase the MiG-35 radar technology - according to Yuri Guskov. The first radar will be shown in November this year in front of potential buyer.

Shame they haven't upgraded it to allow ordinance to be carried, but obviously having an ESM pod is rather more valuable than one more weapon...

The ESM is very important as you said, but how much weight does it add?

I more like Talisman ECM pod, which also have MAWS sensors build inside and missile launcher could be placed on ECM pod, so you will not lost a missile to ECM pod. It is from Belarus, but they are allies and Russia could buy license to build them at home. Talisman could as well be used on Su-25 and Yak-130.

Thanks... In that case 150 kg isn't much weight at all, so the payload should not be affected very much.

Alternative is to place jamming pod under air intake or to place this equipment inside the plane.

Lets be clear... this jamming pod is for MiG-29M2 and not MiG-35S, which has its own internal jamming and support suite... and 5 external weapon pylons on each wing.

External jamming pods are expensive but a good idea because you don't have to buy as many and only use as you need them. They are also cheaper and easier to upgrade and can be passed on to a range of aircraft in the fleet....

I don't know, how many differences will be between MiG-29M2 and MiG-35, but I think, both could carry targeting pods under air intakes and a pod with MAWS sensors. I don't see a problem to place jamming pod there too. Other story are standard MiG-29 and MiG-29SMT fighters, which could place jamming pod only on under wing pylons.

MiG-35 was included in the State Defense Order
    Russian Aviaton » Tuesday October 7, 2014 00:23 MSK

CEO of RAC MiG, Sergey Korotkov, said that MiG-35 fighters were included in the State Defense Order, Lenta.ru reports. According to him, Ministry of Defense and the Corporation are closer to agreement on purchase of these vehicles by the Russian air forces. The exact number of aircraft to be delivered has not been specified yet.

«We are one and a half steps closer to the final decision. Both parties now have a clear understanding of things. Earlier we had different opinions but now our positions moved closer to each other and the corresponding line was added to the State Defense Order program», — Korotkov said.

Nevertheless, according to the corporation’s CEO, the exact number of aircraft to be delivered has not been defined yet.

The parties have been negotiating deliveries of MiG-35 fighters to Russian air forces since 2010; however, they still haven’t come to agreement on the matter. So far Russian Ministry of Defense signed contracts with RAC MiG for deliveries of 24 carrier-based MiG-29K/KUB fighters to Russian navy and 16 MiG-29SMT fighters to Russian air forces.

MiG-35 is the latest aircraft derived from famous MiG-29 fighter. Its range has been extended and it is fitted with state-of-the-art avionics and engines with thrust vector control. At the same time, specialists say that the increased cost and weight of the aircraft originally designed as a light fighter decrease its competitive ability as compared to heavy fighters from Su-27 Family.

All aircraft evolve and become more capable... to say the improvement of the MiG-29 to the MiG-35 makes it worse is to say going from a V-2 to a Saturn 5 was silly because the Saturn 5 is so much bigger and more expensive than the V-2.

the fact that the MiG-35 can do most of the things an Su-35 in a smaller lighter cheaper aircraft is to the credit of the MiG-35 and is not a fault.
