Russia's New MiG-35 May Replace Vietnam's Aging Fighter Jets

Russia's MiG-35 multirole fighter jets may be coming to Vietnam, where the useful life of the country's third-generation MiG-21 fighter jets is coming to an end, the head of MiG aircraft manufacturer Sergei Korotkov told RIA Novosti.

The MiG-35 is a new multirole fighter which includes fifth-generation information and sighting systems. According to Korotkov, Southeast Asia is an "interesting region" for the aircraft manufacturer when it comes to prospective sales.

"According to our evaluation, there are definite prospects for MiG-35s in Vietnam, where the expected life of MiG-21 fighter jets is coming to an end," Korotkov told RIA Novosti.

Ideal for Vietnam and MiG Corp.

mig factory showed 3 mig-29 kub and 1 mig-35 .. this mig-35 is a test fighter for RUAF?

No, its for export. It is MiG-29M2 renamed to export MiG-35D.

    who you think ordered it?

Customer is kept in secret, but I think most probably Iraq.

Perhaps Belarus? They need something to replace their old MiG-29s.

Real what? This is just words from head of MiG (not completely uninterested in sell his product...) that it would make sense for Vietnam to replace MiG-21's with MiG-35. Not a solid contract or anything.

Why would Belarus be a secret customer? Their contract for Mi-8 and Yak-130 is publicly known, same goes for other ex-USSR republics. Most probably Iraq or Syria or maybe even Iran. All others would not buy them secretly.

There have been several dozen iraqi pilots and mechanics training in Russia for the last 2 years. Iraqi pm.on his official visit to Moscow had a conference with them (their faces were hidden for security reasons). Pic should be in iraqi export thread....

The first experimental MiG-35 for the Russian AF will be built in 2016

    http://vpk-news.ru/news/27239

"The first prototype of the MiG-35 for the Russian air force is planning to produce in the first half of next year", - said the Agency interlocutor.

According to him, in accordance with the state contract will be constructed, the second prototype of the MiG-35. For the first time in many years, the pilot will be made entirely at the expense of budgetary funds and not for the money of the Corporation, as it was previously.

"Multi-role fighter MiG-35 belongs to a generation "4++". This plane can be regarded as a transitional stage between the fourth and fifth generations," - said the Agency interlocutor.

According to him, the MiG-35 is equipped with the latest optical radar station with infrared, TV and laser sighting devices, created using space technologies. The radar provides detection, tracking, recognition and capture of air and ground/surface targets in the front and rear hemispheres, day and night. Optical-location station and a new helmet-mounted target designation system and aiming integrated weapon control system.

"In the armament of the MiG-35 is equipped with new advanced aircraft weapons that aren't offered for export. Including means to defeat long-range options that can attack targets without entering the zone of enemy air defenses. The MiG-35 is equipped with a modern complex defense that minimizes the possibility of sudden attack fighter. This facility enables us to recognize both the aircraft and the flying missiles," - said the Agency interlocutor.

The power plant consists of two RD-33MK engines 5.4 tons thrust (with afterburner 9 tons), equipped with smokeless combustion chamber and new electronic control system with full responsibility FADEC type. The cost per flight hour of the MiG-35 is almost 2.5 times lower than the MiG-29

Like the X-35 and the F-35. One was to sell the product another is the one built to Air Force specification.

That is exactly it. As per the second para in the press release, the first prototype funded by the company to do what the company thought the RuAF wanted, the next one will be state funded to do what the RuAF (and export customers?) actually want.

I apologize in advance for this naive question, but I have a particular interest for the industrial and logistical aspects of military projects so my question is :

    - Do you think that MiG company is technically able to produce a single-seat MiG-35 with a "single-seat" airframe, without the big canopy, like the "old" design ?

    - If yes, do you think they will commercially accept this request, if a foreign customer express that wish ?

According to the main third world air force philosophy, the single seat configuration is still common, and it will be an opportunity for Mig to keep a leader position on those markets...

What Happened to Russia's Last MiG-29 Regiment?

Three advanced Su-30SM fighter jets have reportedly been put into service at a Russian Aerospace Forces regiment based in the country's Rostov region.

A Russian Aerospace Forces regiment stationed in the country's Rostov region got its first three sophisticated Su-30SM fighters, according to the press service of the Southern Military District.

The press service said that twenty more such warplanes will be delivered to the Rostov regiment before the end of this year.

Experts from the Center for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies have, meanwhile, argued that the regiment is the last Russian Aerospace Forces unit to still include the Soviet-made MiG-29 fighters.

The experts referred to the unit as the 31st Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 1st Mixed Air Division of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

They said that in light of the planned deliveries of the Su-30SMs and MiG-29SMT to the Rostov regiment, it is already safe to say that the "career" of the MiG-29 fighters in the regiment has come to a close.

The MiG-29SMT is an improved version of the MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter aircraft, designed by the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG.The plane is equipped with high-precision air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons, which can deliver high combat efficiency against aerial-, ground-, and sea-based targets. The aircraft incorporates enhanced cockpit and avionics, additional fuel tanks, an upgraded engine, and increased weapons carriage capacity.

As for the Su-35SM, it is a super maneuverable multirole 4++ generation Russian jet fighter. It was developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau as a modernized version of the Su-30MK fighter family.

Its equipment has been adjusted to meet the requirements of the Russian Aerospace Forces, including its radio-radar and communication systems, modernized ejection seat as well as advanced support systems.

On August 1, 2015, the Russian Air Force, along with the Aerospace Defense Forces and the Air Defense Troops, was merged into a new branch of the Armed Forces: the Russian Aerospace Forces.

According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, "the single command unites aviation, air defense and anti-missile defense troops, space forces and means of the armed forces."

As far as I know, Sokol aviation plant has been offering these flights since the 90's, so not exactly news. Not only MiG-29, but also 31 and 25 (though I think the MiG-25 is not flying anymore).

    - Do you think that MiG company is technically able to produce a single-seat MiG-35 with a "single-seat" airframe, without the big canopy, like the "old" design ?

Of course they could but it would be stupid to do so.

    - If yes, do you think they will commercially accept this request, if a foreign customer express that wish ?

It would be rather expensive and the result would not be a better aircraft.

One of the huge advantages of the Su-27UB (two seat trainer version of Flanker) over the MiG-29UB two seat trainer was that the Flanker was an operational aircraft with fully functioning radar and systems.

There are a lot of missions where two crew are better than just one... where two sets of eyes or the ability for one set of eyes to be resting and the other scanning the skies and sensors allow much better performance than just one.

Having an airframe the same for single and two seat options makes it cheaper and gives you the option of two crew or one with slightly more fuel. The large canopy is not a problem in terms of drag... the two seat is not slower or heavier... it just carries slightly less fuel.

Not clear yet, but this might be the first MiG-29UBM of which two are supposed to be delivered this year. Notable features are the downward firing CHFL and wingtip antennas (RWR or ECM, not sure), similar to the indian UPG.

Might actually be 4. There were 2 others being flight tested earlier in the year with the first batch of Mig-31BM's. Still unable to confirm if they are the same craft as these or additional.
