Nice pic (but fugly paint), shows 9-12s still going strong!
Another reason I think people are underestimating the size of the MiG-29 legacy fleet in service. It is clearly not down to sub 100 airframes.

And then there's this, a 9-53 (or is this PS?!). Wonder what's the story with this paint, there was also at least an Su-27UB painted same.

Interesting. I thought there are no more MiG-29 airframes left that are worthy of an upgrade for more SMT's? So are these new airframes? If so, why SMT and not just outright order 35's with its newer and more advanced radar?

I think that no matter SMT definition in the article these are actually newly build MIG-29M.

Re: MiG-29/ΜiG-35 Fulcrum: News
If it is really SMT and not MiG-29M as Viktor preditcs (and I hope), then its the legacy airframe, not the new and still unfinished MiG-35.
The systems on the latter are still very raw.
Legacy airframe + Zhuk-M = easy and cheap.

There were pictures from the Lukhovitsy (i think) factory taken in 2011 clearly showing several unfinished 9.13 airframes gathering dust. Unfortunately i lost my bookmarks so can't link to them now... but if someone can ask paralay, he knows the pictures.

Myanmar ordered 20 used MIG-29 which could have used all the leftovers.

The SMT upgrade is an upgrade and can be applied to old model Mig-29s and also to new model Mig-29Ms.
I hope they apply it to new model Mig-29Ms as they will get the best lifespan from the new airframes and with proper maintainence they should last much better than upgraded older models.
They will likely also be interesting export aircraft that are cheaper than full standard Mig-29Ms with their original equipment, yet offer a basic airframe that could be upgraded to Mig-35 standard as that is pretty much what the Mig-29M2 is... the basis for the Mig-35.
As the technology gets cheaper it can have newer items added over time to keep the aircraft competitive.
As a swing fighter/bomber it makes sense to use a Mig-29SMT to drop laser guided bombs on targets instead of a Su-35 or PAK FA which should be clearing the skies of enemy aircraft.

Targeting pod and defensive systems.
We are still pretty unclear about the defensive object.

Yep, definitely a targeting pod the other one might be a towed decoy, although considering its position its unlikely.

Re: MiG-29/ΜiG-35 Fulcrum: News
The left one is clearly an ELINT pod and the right one has also very distinguishable colored ball which is "clouded" and it is a MAWS (Missile Approach Warning Sensor) and the housing alone would be to big just to house the MAWS so it has also ECM jamming capabilities.

Re: MiG-29/ΜiG-35 Fulcrum: News
The left pod is indeed a UOMZ targeting pod (not ELINT), while the small right one does have MAWS sensors for lower hemisphere coverage (complementing the MAWS sensors on nose and spine and LWS on wingtips), and possibly a towed decoy in it, but we don't know. In fact there was a recent article in a magazine with some info on these systems i think, need to recheck it.

Re: MiG-29/ΜiG-35 Fulcrum: News
You are right it isn't an ELINT pod, i should've look closer, it is a FLIR UOMZ for ground targeting.

And why not... it looks like an excellent aircraft that has had to live in the shadow of its larger stable mate.

Re: MiG-29/ΜiG-35 Fulcrum: News
I would be far more interested if they where able to put in a more powerful hybrid radar or an AESA radar in the MiG-29M. Would really increase performance of the aircraft significantly.
