This is beginning to look like the early-phase of the 2nd Chechen campaign. With any luck, soon will come the mid-phase - the continued shortening of the life-expectancy of rebel leaders, the dissolution of regular fronts and lines towards more of a counter-insurgency conflict, and the break-up of large rebel formations into smaller ones and their withdrawal towards the mountains and other places where they can be contained and gradually grinded-down, or accept surrender in exchange for amnesties.

Amnesties? With all due respect FP, you don't offer amnesties to serpents. You pull their fangs out and leave them in a cage to rot.

Daesh (Islamic State) launched an attack on positions of al-Nusra Front terrorists in Syria. The attack resulted in the death of a dozen of militants. Some 12 al-Nusra terrorists were killed in clashes that erupted after Daesh militants attacked al-Nusra Front positions in the village of Hosh Hamad in the province of Daraa.
The recent advance by the Syrian Army across the country has increased strife among militant groups, according to FARS News.
Earlier it was reported that Ahrar al-Sham Emir and Shura Council member was killed by unidentified gunmen in the Syrian Province of Homs. Abu Rated al-Homsi, a member of Ahrar al-Sham Shura Council and Homs Emir, was killed in Syria on Tuesday. According to reports, unidentified gunmen opened fire at a car carrying al-Homsi, the "Emir" of the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham, and his wife in the village of al-Farhaniyah, near the town of Talbiseh in Homs. Al-Homsi and his wife were killed.
Ahrar al-Sham leaders have lost three senior commanders as a result of infighting in the recent weeks, according to intelligence sources. "Mohammad Abu Yihiya, one of the leaders of Ahrar al-Sham, and Abu Tamim another commander of the terrorist group in Jarjanaz town in Idlib province have been killed as a result of infightings," the sources told FARS News.
Meanwhile, Takfiri terrorists acknowledged the that military commander of Ahrar al-Sham Abdul-Qader al-Dabaan had been killed.
Last week, it was reported that heavy battles broke out between Takfiri militants from Jeish al-Islam and Jeish Tahrir al-Sham groups in Damascus province as militants continued to lose positions in Syria. Terrorists from Jeish al-Islam engaged in clashes with Jeish Tahrir al-Sham terrorists in Damascus countryside.

This kit includes small aerodnamic wings giving the bomb a 60 km glide range. If so, it was possibly fired from the northern part of the Golan Heights occupied by Israel.
Nasrallah, the spiritual leader of Hezbollah said they would react at a time of their choosing. It appears they have done so.
Israel has many heavily fortified observation posts and bases along the Lebanese border in the Golan, some right on or even over the border. These are surrounded by significant and sophisticated electronic surveillance devices. The Israelis use armored bulldozers to remove suspicious objects.
A while ago, a couple of Israeli armored vehicles were blown up by a massive bomb that totally destroyed one of them and sent the other 50 meters through the air. Four IDF were killed includeing a genral from the intelligence service at the nearby base and two of his assistants.
The Israelis have absolutely no idea how Hezbollah managed to plant the device on the roadway. It wasd one in spite of the enhanced Israeli security in the expectation of some response.

Probably had Hezbollah's presence masked by some serious ECM assets, I wonder which country and which systems could potentially do that?

...The Kurds are eager to fulfill their dream of a united Rojava along the entire northern border, and to deny them at least some progress toward that goal would be to stop the only effective ally against IS in northern Syria. If the West does not work with them on this objective, it will push them into the arms of Moscow, which has made clear to the PYD that it is quite willing to help; in fact, there is already clear Kurdish coordination with Russian forces in northern Aleppo province.

The Kurds may be winning against ISIS, but they could end up making tensions in the region worse

Oh the humanity! When will those Russians ever stop (giving terrorist sponsor regimes like the USA and KSA a hard time)?

NEW SYRIA INTERACTIVE MAP (Jan 3, 2016)
d_taddei2 wrote:Hi does anyone know a good source of Syrian air force attacks most reported air strikes are Russian but i know that the Syrians are still actively striking enemy positions.
I think it has to be said that amongst the other hero's of the Syrian air campaign i.e Mig-21, Mig-23, Su-22, that the L-39 should have a worthy mention these cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, and ease of use have served well for the Syrian armed forces, i think it has to be said despite their main role as a trainer they have served well as a cheap light strike air craft. Russia could convert some of theirs to light strike and offer then to Syria as they are slowly replacing with Yak 130. Russia would only use them for flying targets or scrap them. I think that the Mi-24 and Mi-8 used as an attack heli are worth mentioning. If it wasn't for the Syrian air force and Soviet aircraft i think the war up till now could have went a lot differently.
During the armed clashes, at least 33 terrorists were killed.
According to a representative of the Syrian Army, Daesh terrorists started an offensive from the strategic hilltop of Tal Kroum, targeting the frontline positions of the Syrian military forces at the Southeastern perimeter of the airbase.
"However, the ISIL's [Daesh] offensive was short-lived, as the Syrian army alongside the National Defense Forces (NDF) fought off the terrorists attempting to bypass their first line of defense near Tal Kroum," the official told Fars News.
Deir ez-Zor is the seventh largest city in Syria located to the northeast from the country's capital of Damascus, which had repeatedly became a place to armed clashes between Syrian forces and terrorist militias.
Earlier it was reported, that government forces have made major advances in the area and regained control over several heights in the al-Tahrda Mountains, east of Deir ez-Zor military airport.
