3rd phase was assault on village itself from the suburb direction and mountains above Salma center, Syrian army units in Tathiriyah and artillery from Kadim keep rebel forces busy inside Marj Khawka.
What happened to the defenders? Was the quick final collapse down to fleeing to fight another day?

Fled to fight another day, one of the major group fled after Syrian forces took Tathiriyah, others where cornered in northern sector and doomed.

If they fled it's either a sign of collapse or they've been building up stronger positions up north (question is where?).

They where overpowered. This was well organized and executed attack, surprisingly well if you look at the SAA standards..

It seem the Russian general's presence was beyond observation, some serious tactical planning went into this operation. The maps show absolutely astonishing results, huge area taken with not much casualties for SAA (or so we know right now). The insurgents seem to have simply creeped.. after RuAF targeting. Short supplies during winter make even defending such positions near impossible (should be noted).

Very few casualties, storming was done mostly by infantry, this time, finally, they did not rush tanks inside the town, they kept them outside.. Heaviest fighting was in town center. the whole area was taken in one day basically.

Thanks and excellent. Fled to spread the 'no point in resisting, they are too strong, get out before its too late, the day of doom is coming' message. Bet that's in the Sun Wu manual as part of his 'always give the enemy a way out' thinking.

It was one thing being a happy, well supplied band always moving forward enjoying the spoils of war (OK, looting and raping), quite another to be falling back, ill-supplied, losing friends and in the cold, wet winter to boot. Bad enough for hardened troops but for this lot of rank amateurs it must be really tough. Sounds like they are reaping the whirlwind and enjoying perfect poetic justice to me.

There was a terriost attack in Turkey and they say it was a "Syrian" who did it, just wait until the Turks try and pin this on Assad and Syria and if they try something funny, I hope thier asses are handed to them.

At the end the video they talk about a new Christian group that is fighting the the US supported YPG, does anyone more about this Christian group? First time I heard of them, who supports them? Who trains them? Who equips them? They are right on Turkeys borders.

That was the instant reaction of the Government, 'see ISIS attack us too', another convenient and timely Turkish event. It looks as if most of the dead are German so Merkel's reaction will be interesting, whether German Intelligence think it was aimed at them or not by whoever did it.

Her reaction was that these attacks are against freedom, etc. Nowhere did she mention that the particular city of Turkey is the jihad capital of Turkey and global hub in/out of the Middle East and Caucasus, since the Chechen and Yugo wars. With all sorts of radicals based there. The reality is such incidents are expected there since the local gov is in bed with certain elements of the sort. Why tourists keep visiting such countries is beyond me. They are not safe there, since ages ago.

Oh look, the Latakia band of hopeless turk-jihadis is giving out a very "post-2000 Chechnya" vibe.

Russian general: New militants regularly arrive to Syria’s Latakia province from Turkey

MOSCOW, January 11. /TASS/. New recruits are regularly arriving to the north-eastern part of the Syrian province of Latakia from Turkey, Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoy, chief of the main operations department of the Russian General Staff, told journalists on Monday.

Rudskoy said that Syrian government forces are making progress while militants are suffering losses and forces to leave their positions. "However, despite efforts of the international community directed at stopping any support to terrorists, new recruits regularly arrive to the north-eastern part of Latakia province from the Turkish territory," he added.

this won't stop until the border is physically sealed with SAA presence. unshaven

and RuAF is wrecking the place in Sarmada, Idlib:

the border crossing to Reyhanli in Turkey is the obvious target, known weapons route.

Thanks, looks and sounds like their morale is low, very low. From the butthurt chechen video, lack of TOW launches (seen a malyutka today), loss of Salma, loss of Jarjisah and those series of huge air strikes (all over the country).. well, Tuesday was a bad day for the "moderates".

Rough count in Syria 60,000 Daesh, 30,000 Kurds and 80,000 others divided into over 100 fractions.

According to Putin, Russians have deemed 11 fractions as "moderates" and are giving them air support. even the Brits now admit that at least 65% of others have Al-Qaeda affiliation.

Wiki has these totals - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_Civil_War
