These devices seem to be appearing all over the place, so someone is making them in reasonable numbers. Iran?

What are these are devices? And what is the purpose of these devices?

My guess is some kind of infra-red system giving coverage to the front and sides. It might be sufficiently effective to give a few seconds warning of something hot heading in your direction.

For any artillery fans out there. One of the more elusive vehicles in the ranks of the SAA/Republican Guard: The 152mm 2S3 Akatsiya.

If it is indeed some device for the protective purpose such as early warning device of MAW type, why the hell mount it on a fucking Toyota pickup that is worth less than the ammunition this ZSU-23-2 fires?

because moderate opposition/isis use AGTMs to destroy such pickups? Uncle Sam provides streams of AGTMs to ISIS

Because they're baits. And cheap (relatively). Syrians have become guinea pigs for two opposing MIC's.

Look at it this way, to save life of those soldiers. Those warning devices should be quite cheap anyways.

Suppressing fire maybe. This MAWS type device could locate ATGM launcher and firing on it with ZU-23-2 could well disrupt its work. ATGM team will most probably launch missile on a tank rather than on Toyota, so the gunner on Toyota could fire on ATGM operator and kill him before missile hit the tank. More they have those devices around, easier they could locate ATGM launchers and destroy them. If they triangulate it inside an object, they could as well send a plane with KAB500 to level it.

ekhm remember this Hamas pickup driver who escaped AGTM? so yes they shoot AGTMs on pickups because sponsors seem to ship hundreds of them
BTW triangulating using such devices in real time and calling AF would require some network-centric management platform. I doubt SAA has one.

The Kurds are trying to close/control the border between Syria and Turkey.

Re: Syrian Civil War: News #5
The Kurds are in a much better position to quickly cut off the town, it is still quite a way for the SAA to fight their way up. What will be interesting is what happens, assuming the Kurds take the area, when the SAA gets there. Is the Government going to insist on taking it over? Then how do the Turks react?Erk wrote:par far wrote:Why are the Kurds taking Azaz?

I am not sure what the Kurdish long term game plan it, they want their own territory and they seem to be choosing it to be a buffer zone between Syria and Turkey, on the Syrian side of the border. It would be interesting to know what Assad/Putin think of this.

Re: Syrian Civil War: News #5
Probably let them get on with it. Then at the end of the war the Kurds will get a self rule area within Syria. The border will probably have to be a Government operation to reduce the Turks pain at having all those 'orrible Kurds next to them.Erk wrote:JohninMK wrote:The Kurds are in a much better position to quickly cut off the town, it is still quite a way for the SAA to fight their way up. My guess is that future Syrian state will be modeled closely after Russian Federation. Kurds become part of the greater whole. Hence the leeway they been getting.
