Is designed to be fired submerged... only fired while surfaced as part of this test.
What is the hurry?

Hi Xeno,
885 shooting Onyx at 3:13
We cannot conclude whether it is kalibre or "socalled onyx" ..
the clip is extremely small duration .. couple of seconds.
The acceleration and speed gain of the missile is not shown.
bUT I must point out that this ..
A really an eye opening video clip of advance launch mechanisms of the newest Russian killer missiles.

Re: Project 885: Yasen class
Onix has a very unique launching profile.

Watching 10 times you can find whether it is onix/yakhon/brahmos or something else very easily...

Re: Project 885: Yasen class
Onix, Yakhont, and Brahmos all have the same launch profile.
They are blown up out of the tube launcher by a rocket booster.
A side thruster rocket near the nose of the missile then fires and turns the rocket in the direction it is heading and fires in the opposite direction so the missile stops at about horizontal pointing towards its target and the main solid rocket booster fires up to accelerate it towards its target so that when it burns out the main ramjet engine can be started to accelerate the missile to full speed.
The launch is very similar to the all rocket TOR SAM, which also uses nose mounted thrusters to direct its nose towards the target before the main engine fires.
The main difference is that the Onyx, Yakhont, Brahmos also has a nose cover that is jettisonned for the ramjet engine.

Re: Project 885: Yasen class
Any news on the progress made on the Kazan? Will these be the only 2-3 yasens put into service in this decade?
BTW why are we so happy and view it as a great achievement that a single sub that has been in construction and testing for almost 21 years is finally in service? Shouldn't we feel ashamed?

It has not been in construction for 21 years, for starters.
Shame? Well, up to you.

USA can easily assign 3-4 hunters into a wolfpack and track white elephant yasens everywhere.

Based on what? Your knowledge of the Yasens actual noise characteristics?
Or are you, like always, trolling and talking out of your ass?

Re: Project 885: Yasen class
haha 3-4 attack subs wont cut it, esp. if they have roughly similiar noise characterisitcs.navyfield wrote:USA can easily assign 3-4 hunters into a wolfpack and track white elephant yasens everywhere.
Also, white elephant? I doubt it, its more like 3/8s a Kirov's VLS firepower plus the Akula's firepower molded into a hull thats as or even stealthier than Virginia. (3.5 billion $ Yasen's price - 2.7 billion $ Virginia's price =) .8$ billion dollars never looked so well spent.

Kazan is first serial boat, it won't have nearly the same testing regime and trials period as Severodvinsk.

Copy pasting from Janes .. may be experience members comment ..on this..
I believe 100 % that something is not right in this whole process of pr885 Yasen submarine.
The submarine was accepted only for trial runs and not commissioned by Navy
Trial runs of pr885 yasen will continue till 2015 ..

Delay in accepting Severodvinsk could slow new Russian SSN deliveries
The Russian Navy accepted Severodvinsk (K 329), the first Project 885 Yasen-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN), for "experimental use" on 30 December 2013, according to reports from state-run news agencies.
A defence industry source told RIA Novosti that an "act of acceptance-transfer" was signed, with a navy representative reporting this also to ITAR-TASS. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin confirmed the acceptance of Severodvinsk on 31 December. However, builder Sevmash did not mark the occasion with a ceremony or a press release.
In November 2013, IHS Jane's reported that state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) had insisted that Severodvinsk would be delivered in 2013, despite reports that the boat would not be ready until 2014.
