Why is IS so successful? They even put Houthis to shame. I have a distinct feeling that VBIED operators and Abu Hajars, "mindless generic fanatic" are not the actual representation of IS forces. They fight a battle at a complete disadvantage: being targeted by US/Coalition, Russia/Syria on more than one occasion, all the while not enjoying open and extensive foreign material and intelligence aid.
In my opinion, taking everything into account, the most effective force in the fray when it comes to utilising the resources they have at their disposal.
Look at the way they outflanked and caught the T-72, the reports of knocking out tanks around Palmyra, 4+2 Leo2... Mosul defence seems very competent, too.

Turkish Army is a joke, this a frickin sideshow and they get trashed like that.
And these are their elite MBT forces from Eastern Thrace, facing our Mech/Armored Divisions. Clearly they lack quality.
Nothing wrong the Leos they are excellent MBTs. The Turks just suck at this tank business, maybe their crews aren't well trained to fight in snow.

IS is no longer comparable to 2014...that doesn't mean the fight against them is a walk in the park. Tactical successes are always possible but that doesn't change the overall picture of their gradual decline. So far they can still count on the incompetence of their advisaries. If they face a determined force like the besieged garrison at Deir ez-Zor or the YPG it looks completely different.

SF officers like the one below are very rare for Turks as they purged an entire brigade of SFs just after the summer coup attempt. You'd think they'd preserve folks like that..

I agree with you. Just going to add, though, that IS fighters are probably very highly motivated right now as they see their relative success in Mosul.SturmGuard wrote:Why is IS so successful? Re: Syrian War: News #11
Footage without and later with snowfall, after the VBIED, implies the Turkish command and control failed. There was at least a 6-8 hour gap between the IS strike and the time when IS foots-soldiers were strolling around freely making propaganda videos with intact tanks and driving away with an AIFV, possibly (acc. to twitter) two Leo 2A4. Turks claim they hit one Leo2A4 with air force, yet no footage was released.

There's no boat that has the capacity to drop a battalion on the field that has passed through the Bosphorus for the whole week.
The RoRo that went to Syria this week had no room for more than 40/50 vehicles and supplies (7100 ton ship). Lugging 30 tanks= 1500 tons/
Someone from Syria on Twitter claimed he saw column of "37 T-90s".

Re: Syrian War: News #11
Considering that Turkish army have a lot of experiences in their long war against kurds in SE Turkey, it is quite strange, that they go not that well prepared for this operation against ISIL.
For now we could as well conclude, that Leopard 2 tanks are no better than older M-60 Sabra in Syria. Interesting is the photo, where we could clearly see that leopard 2 turret also fly after hit, not only on T-72 tanks. Leopard 2 tank is well over rated tank. Not good for KMW marketing.

Turks claim they destroyed that one by an airstrike, but there is nothing to confirm that, also there would have been some damage to the surroundings not only the tank, and there is none. They are probably claiming that to supress the fact it was baked by Konkurs..

This was an overrun position that was first hit by an VBIED first. Leopards or T-72 would make little difference if these men on the Turkish side act as they did over there. The shame for the Turks is getting overrun like that and no TuAF hits on intact primo Leos (clear day, no snow when hit).
A Fagot/Spigot is probably enough to send any Leo 2A4, even later ones, blazing if hit on the turret side like that.

As Chief Keef says "bang bang" you can't really do much about it. They parked the tanks behind a wall when they could have had direct fire control... The Turks are already lacking basic supplies in the region, I'm sure troop morale is low after this incident. ISIL is still proving its worth (not supporting them I'm saying they're capable) IMO, those guys even with majority lacking good training have tactical wits and fanatic morale.

IS is not successful, but rather bold. And sometimes it pays. You have to understand exactly what is being done here.
TSK has too few assets to control the AO. They rely on the Bus Army for manpower. We know that the Bus Army is nowhere near reliable or efficient. In many videos you see only a huge Hollywood style action and a lot of propaganda from the Bus Army.
Meanwhile the TSK is doing all the lifting by pounding IS when it can. Couple of strikes push IS back and IS pulls back a lot in order to fight when it can actually pull stuff like this.
Also let us be honest many things do not travel around. Info from the US is not shared with others. Which in return does not have much to say in the Syrian deal.
Basically too few hands, worthless allies and covert warfare by every side. US sees IS does not do jack. Russia limits Turkey in its air coverage, SDF targets TSK and FSA from time to time<<.
Clusterfuck achieved. Also as said. Northern Syria is a bad spot to execute open offensive warfare.

I did the math before.
The RoRo has only 2000 ton net useful charge. Its a 110-20 boat with a 12m wide lower deck and middle separation, thus only two rows of tanks can be fitted because t90 is a 4x10 tank. With 100 m length available that is 20 tanks at best. Watching how it had about 500 tons on the upper deck alone that means that at best the Russians brought half a battalion like last time. Although I do not believe it<

Re: Syrian War: News #11
Guys from Twitter, it appears that there might be a 4th Leo tank in the nature somewhere. One guy shows that two Leopards in same picture.
IS photo shows two tanks pointing straight, while the tanks we have seen so far were pointing slightly right and almost rear.
The only photo of a Leo bombed has the plate number obscured by watermark.
