From what open source info I can gather the max speeds given for the yasen-m are 35 knots +. It is very fast and the rumored depth is equally impressive. Now add to this stealthiness near to latest models of our virginia class submarines. It also has a larger set of passive and active arrays.

The thing is a beast. I could be wrong but I think I am beginning to see now why they went with the modified seven bladed screw. Yasen is the first true purpose built multirole submarine.

A submerged speed of 35 knots is nothing new for SSN class vessels. Project 971 could already sail at this speed. As you know, the Russians have created submarines with even higher speeds. Papa and Alpha. Seawolf can also sail at such speeds as 35 knots. However, the 885M project can certainly dive much deeper than Western ships. Officially it is 600m, unofficially it is even deeper.

The most modern heavy torpedo Fizyk 2 compared to the latest versions MK-48 or Spearfish. How does it compare? Available information shows that it has a range of about 50 km and a speed of 50-60 knots. It descends below 500m. MK-48 has similar performance down to 800m. In the case of Russian torpedoes, this is not necessary. American ships don't go below 500m Smile

Typical Yankee nonsense. Torpedoes using Otto fuel *all* have degraded performance at high depth. Mk-48 included. For this reason the Europeans typically use electric torpedoes. Which do not have the same performance degradation while operating at high depth.

The US hasn't upgraded the propulsion section of the Mk-48 in like three decades. They just upgrade the sensors and electronics. The performance characteristics of the propulsion section are very well known by US opponents.

This is interesting because the MK 48 ADCAP was a response to the Proj 705 Lira ships. The torpedo was designed for a depth of up to 800 m. Generally speaking, most heavy torpedoes are powered by Otto fuel. Fizyk 2 also descends to over 500m. It is the most modern Russian heavy torpedo.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Shark_torpedo

Like all other battery powered HWTs, the battery power system does not suffer the loss of performance of Otto fuel II types at greater depths since there is no exhaust to deal with at greater pressures.

Interesting project.  It seems that Europe has overtaken the USA and Russia in this respect by creating heavy electric torpedoes.  Russia The US still uses chemical drives in its heaviest torpedoes? Since the electric drive is certainly quieter, safer, and works better at greater depths.
