Russian special military operation in Ukraine #4

MOSCOW, 6 March. /TASS/. The S-300 anti-aircraft missile system was destroyed by the missile forces of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine. This was announced to journalists on Sunday by the official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov.

"The missile forces destroyed the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system," Konashenkov said.

According to the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, also over the past day, fighter aircraft and air defense of the Russian Aerospace Forces shot down four Su-27 and one MiG-29 aircraft in the Zhytomyr region, Su-27 and Su-25 in the Radomyshl region, one Su-25 in near Nizhyn, two Mi-8 helicopters - in the Kyiv region. In just a day, six unmanned vehicles were destroyed, including Bayraktar TB2.

This doesn't smell right to me.

Helicopters are always easiest to hear when they fly towards you. Even flying at treetop height it is difficult to defend against this type of shot when the missile is partially shielded by the trees. If the Mi-24 had been lower would the MANPAD have smashed its way through the trees?

It maybe better to fly higher to give the defence systems more time to react.

This doesn't smell right to me.  Correct me if I am wrong but MANPADs are invariably IR guided, and without a radar they are only able to determine bearing and speed of the target heat source - they cannot directly measure range. Without knowing range one cannot compute an intercept trajectory, and an interception of a helo flying in a virtually perpendicular flight path to the missile wouldn't be possible. This missile however fly straight as a die as though its being guided to a pre-calculated intercept point.  

Are modern IR seekers able to determine the angle subtended by the targets heat signature, and assuming a length typical of a helicopter, approximate the distance accordingly?

The POV is also unusual. Its clearly taken from an elevated position, and from the video the camera location appears to be stationary?

The actual video itself is way to sterile with a very static camera and panning - as if a premeditated take from a movie. Just my opinion but I think it's CGI (very good CGI).

Notice the absolute vertical dive of the Kalibr. Impossible for any CIWS to intercept it. Ukraine will need to fire at least 3-4 BUK missiles from various angles in order to have any chance of intercepting it.
