Re: Russian Military Photos and Videos #1
AFAIK they do use RPG-29, but RPG-7 is used more widely as it is simpler and cheaper and can use most of the same warheads but it lighter and more compact.
A quick search of You tube should result in a few vids of Shmel or later weapons.
I read in a French magazine called RAIDS in the 1990s that the VDV use RPG-29s, but on a visit to France they took only AK-74 rifles and no heavy weapons... ie RPK-74, SVD, PKM, RPG.

Re: Russian Military Photos and Videos #1
Nice photos.
The tail gun of the Il-76 is interesting as it can fire about 3,500 rpm, but also can fire special chaff and flare rounds, which means they can be used to rapidly set up clouds of flares and chaff which should make it more effective against more modern missiles. Of course a burst of 100 shells to one side of the aircraft that is a mix of chaff and flares should create a radar and IR signature that could be the aircraft in a burst of a few seconds. Then firing HE rounds the guns could then be directed at the incoming threat to physically shoot it down like Phalanx.
Interesting idea, though I think Vitebisk-M should be rather more effective.

Re: Russian Military Photos and Videos #1
It actually makes a lot of sense... a cannon with a very high rate of fire can fire short bursts that form clouds of flares and chaff rapidly... a large cloud of flares and chaff form a complex heat pattern and radar signature that looks more like a real target than a string of flares or individual flares.
Assuming an IR guided missile is approaching from directly astern the guns could be deflected 90 degrees and fire a burst of 100 shells with 50 being flares and 50 being chaff setting up a large cloud of heat and radar reflective material rapidly a few hundred metres to the side of the real target... if there is time the gun could then swing to the other side and in a 2 second burst set up a similar cloud on its other side, and then track the incoming missile and fire a burst of HE rounds at it if it approaches the real target.
If you look at this page:
http://russianammo.org/Russian_Ammunition_Page_25mm.html
Scroll down to the third table and look for the round designations of IK and PRL.
The list also includes specialised HE rounds for shooting down balloons.
