Russian navy need Buyan-M ships in all fleets to replace old Nanushka missile boats. It is bigger ship with smaller crew, so it could operate longer on the sea. In my opinion they need around 6 ships in every fleet to secure closer zone around naval bases and to protect territorial waters. Pacific fleet need them even more to protect Kamchatka, Kurils, Sakhalin and Vladivostok bases.

Contract is for 12 boats now, so there are plenty to go around.

I can't imagine they will send more than 6 to the Caspian.
The current structure is 6 21631s + 3 21630 + the two big frigates, that is more than enough.

AFAIK there are a few types of fixed ammo for the 100mm naval gun.

There is a standard HE shell with a mechanical time fuse, plus one with a radio proximity fuse for engaging small aerial targets.

There is also a practise shell with a flash/smoke payload so you can see clearly where it hits.

There is also a degreasing shell to clear the barrel of the grease that protects it from sea water and also raise the temperature of the barrel in very cold conditions to prepare it for firing standard shells.

2 New Missile Corvettes to Join Russia’s Caspian Flotilla

MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s two newest missile corvettes, the Grad Sviyazhsk and the Uglich, have successfully undergone navy sea trials and will be assigned to the Caspian flotilla by July, a spokesman for the Southern Military District said Wednesday.

“The two ships are due to join the Russian navy at the end of the first half of 2014. Most likely, they will be assigned to the Caspian flotilla by July 1,” the spokesman said.

He added the pair will be the first Buyan-M-class corvettes to join the Caspian flotilla.

Anatoly Shlemov, head of the state defense contracts department at the United Shipbuilding Corporation, earlier said the Russian navy would receive ten warships this year.

The Navy is expecting the Veliky Ustyug corvette by late this year and six more warships of the same class by 2020, he said.

Corvettes of the Buyan-M class have a displacement of 950 tons and a maximum speed of 25 knots. They are armed with Kalibr (SS-N-27) anti-ship missiles, 100-mm and 30-mm guns, as well as Igla-1M air defense missiles.

The Caspian flotilla is based in Astrakhan.

This is interesting. I did not know Zvezdochka make the pumpjets for the 21631.
This is the 4th set, and they are finishing work on the 5th. They are expecting another order for 4 more sets soon as well.

So..............at least 9 Byan-M ships for now.

This picture shows well, how much bigger Buyan-M is comparing to Buyan ship.

Pr.21631 have real good strike loads, but the numbers should be increased and construction accelerated so that the Black sea area is filled with at least 12 of these corvettes. These corvettes are more than enough to deal with any naval force that may come to challenge the Russian forces.

These are low tonnage ships and an effort must be taken at the earliest to built them faster. There need to be also other variants other than land and anti-ship, like....

anti-sub variant
8 x Klub

air-defence variant
32 x Shtil or
8 x S-300/400

Targeting unit
1 x tracking radar for S-300/400 and Shtil (installed in place of VL silos, the related equipments like power supply & processing units)

I would more like to see to order 18 more Buyan-M ships, with 6 ships for Baltic, Northern and Pacific fleets, to replace old Nanushka missile corvettes.

Black sea fleet with 6 Buyan-M corvettes, 6 Grigorovich frigates and 6 new Kilo subs will be quite powerful for Black sea operations.

the ships are well armed as is , but still too slow production.

They have shown once they have mastered the production of a type they can produce them fast enough... you just have to look at the Kilos and Talwars to see that serial production is OK... it is one off new ships or boats of a class that takes time... problem with components from the Ukraine now will not help in the short term though in the long term will just make Russian boats cheaper.

Man, all those "oh, but they build them so slow" comments must be driving you nuts! They complain about how this ship and that ship and a totally different ship are all being built "slow", while forgetting that those three ships are all getting built at one time (by "ship I mean ship classes).
