Awesome! This is important as their f-14 fighters are threadbare and they are almost entirely out of their phoenix missiles and components. The old but gold radars on the fighters also suffer, and those still working are showing their age. Thry were amazing but even the mig31 in the 80s surpassed it.

But now with su-35 with R-77-1 and especially the R-37m in concert with the su-35's powerful radar will give long range interceptor capabilities surpassing the f-14 manifold. This is great, and adds further balance of power for iran.

Just for info Iran made their own replacement for phoenix missiles called Fakour-90. So there isn't a shortage of AA missiles for them. Although I would agree that F-14 are getting old now.

I would like to see a few joint ventures between Russia and Iran to see what they can do to further improve them... Iran has some very capable engineers, and their specific needs might lead to ideas and developments that both can benefit from.

It looks like the Su-35 deal is getting closer, with the pilots trained.

Who would have thought that threatening Egypt with CAATSA would have given Russia the opportunity to sell the aircraft ex stock to a bigger Israeli enemy than Egypt will be. Laughing

    This from the FT.

Russia to soon deliver 24 Su-35 fighter jets to Iran: media, 12.29.2022.

Russia is reportedly about to give dozens of the fourth-generation planes to Iran, which are used for air superiority missions, Tasnim news agency reports.

Russia is expected to soon complete the delivery of 24 Su-35 aircraft to Iran, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported on Wednesday.

As reported by the United Aeronautical Corporation (OAK), the Su-35 fighter "combines the qualities of a Moderna fighter (supermanobility, superior active and passive acquisition aid, high supersonic speed and long range, ability to manage Combat Group actions, etc.) and of a good tactical aircraft (wide range of weapons that can be carried, Moderna multi-channel electronic warfare system, reduced radar signature and high combat survivability)".

Some of the fourth-generation aircraft, used mainly for air superiority missions, are to be installed at the Iranian Air Force's Tactical Air Base 8 in the city of Isfahan.

The West and Kiev have accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia despite large-scale aid to Ukraine given by Western countries since Moscow began the special military operation on Feb.24.

Iran and Russia have also signed several agreements in recent months to boost economic, trade, energy and military cooperation.

No Garry not here but wasn't CAATSA a big reason why Egypt is not taking those Su-35?

The whole point of CAATSA was that no one was supposed to buy them, and the situation where Egypt will not publicly say they have bought some leading to Russia selling those plane they may or may not have ordered to Iran is the worst possible result as far as the US is concerned... I am sure they would rather Egypt had them and Iran didn't, but that perhaps is not going to happen... in fact I suspect after Iran gets them Egypt might decide to get the ones they wanted too and further cut ties with the US over this bullying.

Egypt does not tell the US what it can or cannot do.

The West and Kiev have accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia despite large-scale aid to Ukraine given by Western countries since Moscow began the special military operation on Feb.24.

Despite western military aid to Kiev for this war for the last 9 years they mean...

Press TV is also reporting the alleged buy of 24 Su-35...

Russia to provide Iran with dozens of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets ‘in near future’

    Wednesday, 28 December 2022 9:35 AM [ Last Update: Wednesday, 28 December 2022 9:50 AM ]

Russia will soon provide a complete squadron of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets to the Islamic Republic of Iran, a development that will likely further rile up the West as Tehran and Moscow deepen their defense and economic cooperation in defiance of sweeping sanctions and coercive measures.

Media reports, citing military experts, said 24 units of the twin-engine and super-maneuverable aircraft, a fourth-generation fighter jet designed primarily for air superiority roles, will be supplied to Iran in the near future.

It is believed that the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) Tactical Air Base (TAB) 8 in the central Iranian city of Isfahan will accommodate some of the combat aircraft.

Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) says the Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jet “combines the qualities of a modern fighter (super-maneuverability, superior active and passive acquisition aids, high supersonic speed and long range, capability of managing battle group actions, etc.) and a good tactical airplane (wide range of weapons that can be carried, modern multi-channel electronic warfare system, reduced radar signature, and high combat survivability).”

Iran hasn’t acquired any new fighter aircraft in recent years, excluding a few Russian MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters it bought in the 1990s.

Besides the MiG-29, IRIAF mainly uses locally modified F-4 Phantom II, F-14 Tomcat, and F-5E/F Tiger II planes from the 1970s that the toppled US-backed Pahlavi regime received before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran and Russia have signed major deals in recent months to boost their economic, trade, energy and military cooperation.

Iran came under an inclusive regime of American sanctions in 2018 after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The United States and allies imposed a raft of similar and even tougher sanctions on Russia in February after Moscow launched a military operation in Ukraine.

Experts say US sanctions failed to reach their ultimate objective of forcing Iran into major political and military concessions. They insist the bans even created an opportunity for Iran to diversify its economy away from crude revenues and rely more on its domestic resources.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during an economic forum in Vladivostok that Russia was gaining from Western sanctions, saying Moscow saw more opportunities in entering markets in the Middle East and Iran after the sanctions were imposed.

They'd be better off with Su-30SM/2 as a numbers plane and signing an agreement to build them in Iran which would give their military aviation a massive boost. MiG-35 wouldn't be much cheaper to buy than the Su-30 and it's still not in service with the RuAF yet.

The MiG is much cheaper to operate and has 90% of the capability of the Su-35 over shorter distances and at lighter weights.

If you look at actual combat use in the Ukraine the Su-35s are carrying two R-37s and two R-77s and two R-73s and one Kh-31... the MiG-35 would be able to carry the same load on its 8 wing pylons though its range would be lower it could use inflight refuelling to make up the difference.

The MiG-29M is cheaper and has rather more upgrade potential, and is also cheaper to operate.

Iran can't afford to replace all its F-14s and F-4s and MIG-29s and F-5s with Su-35s and Su-30s only, and it wouldn't make sense to try.

I would say a combination of Su-35s and licence production of MiG-29Ms or at least local assembly of MiGs would benefit Iran as a numbers aircraft to fill gaps and add sensors and weapons to their air defence.

I agree with garryb. Iran doesn't have the funds to fully replace with Su-35. Iran produces the kowsar which can be used for a trainer/light strike. A mix of su-35 and mig-29m (with some level of production in Iran) and have it's Su-24 and small number of Su-25 upgraded. It's upgraded Su-22 is actually quite a decent upgrade and could be kept in service for another decade. I would imagine Iran could produce various types of pod to be fitted to the mig-29m as well. What is good is this Su-35 deal is a much needed step in modernization of Iranian air force.

Speaking objectively I think Iran might think of diversifying and going towards China with J-10 fighters. It is more expensive and complicated to have sophisticated weaponry from multiple nations but it is smart to hedge your bets even if you are close allies. If my own nation didnt have a universal MIC and had to outsource I would do the same and buy from more than one source.

The performance of the Su-35 in Ukraine is being stellar and the plane allows Iran to keep Israel humble, since it is perfectly capable of striking their territory and has the radar and the kinematics to battle it out with their F-15 and F-35. Same ditto for the USN, that can be kept under threat by such aircraft even at significant distances from Iran, specially if weapons like Kh-31 are included in the deal. Guided by the OTH radars the country already has and working together with significant ballistic missile and AD forces they are a major element the enemies of Iran need to take in consideration. I would rather see those named quantities increasing than anything else, specially because the cooperation with Russia is being escalated in every aspect, from energy to trade to joint production of civilian aircraft. The 50 turbines they just sold to Russia can be paid in the form of Su-35, the long term participation in the profit of Iran's hydrocarbon resources too. The pressure placed on those two countries is forcing them to operate as bold and committed as it gets, making many otherwise improbable deals possible.

Contract seems to be for 24 jets. Not enough to threaten Israel or the US navy.

If they get green light for introducing their own weapons on them it might be better.

They have the technology to create their own Kinzhal and their own long range cruise missiles as well as long range air to air missiles.

Russia will sell the su-35 and rvv-ae, at best they could get rvv-sd but forget r-37M. That would piss off too much israeli and Russia doesn't want to destroy its relations with them. Israeli didn't delivered weapons to ukraine. Russia is delivering su-35 only because NATO pushed too much in Ukraine, not because of Israeli.

So to appease israeli they won't give weapons like kh-59 or r-37M.

Kh-31 can be delivered but that's not a game changer. To reach a carrier with kh-31 you would need to pass through AEGIS and f-18/35 defences. Very unlikely.

Speaking objectively I think Iran might think of diversifying and going towards China with J-10 fighters.

I appreciate the logic, but the current state of MiG at the moment they could probably get a much better deal than they might with China, including local assembly and joint development options moving forward.

They already operate MiG-29s, with the ones they bought and the ones that arrived from Iraq and decided to stay. Very Happy

I would rather see those named quantities increasing than anything else,

The western reaction will be interesting and probably amusing... they might even offer to stop supporting Kiev if Russia does not deliver Su-35s to Iran... who knows...

Of course the west can't be trusted and has lied and cheated in the past.

Contract seems to be for 24 jets. Not enough to threaten Israel or the US navy.

That is a first contract... and if they were made for Egypt they could be delivered very quickly and follow up orders would be likely.

One Su-35 would be considered a threat by the US and Israel because they are ultra sensitive babies when it comes to Iran.

If they get green light for introducing their own weapons on them it might be better.

Have the Russians ever banned foreign customers adding their own weapons to their aircraft before?

Russia will sell the su-35 and rvv-ae, at best they could get rvv-sd but forget r-37M.

RVV-BD is the name of the export version of R-37M.

And the entire sale is sticking it to the US for their bullshit... why not add the twist?

That would piss off too much israeli and Russia doesn't want to destroy its relations with them. Israeli didn't delivered weapons to ukraine. Russia is delivering su-35 only because NATO pushed too much in Ukraine, not because of Israeli.

Israel has not been an honest partner and continues to occupy Syrian land without a referendum and continues to conduct attacks inside Syria, not to mention the treatment of the Palestinians etc.

So to appease israeli they won't give weapons like kh-59 or r-37M.

They are going to get shit for this sale so they might as well make it worth it.

Kh-31 can be delivered but that's not a game changer. To reach a carrier with kh-31 you would need to pass through AEGIS and f-18/35 defences. Very unlikely.

The MA-31 is the reason they replaced Phalanx with SEA RAM... it would not take a lot of work to convert a 600kg Kh-31 to a 900kg missile with 300kg of extra fuel and the ramjet upgraded to a scramjet to allow the missile to fly three times faster...

Russia - Iran: missiles and UAVs in exchange for aircraft, 01.11.2023.

Rumors that Iran may receive multifunctional fighters of the 4 ++ generation Su-35 into its Air Force, with varying degrees of intensityhave been going on for a long time. In the summer of 2022, this topic is proposedAmericanThe media got a second wind.

We are talking about 24 aircraft (according to some sources - about 12), which were built in Komsomolsk-on-Amur under a contract with Egypt. In 2018, a contract was signed between the governments of the Russian Federation and Egypt for the supply of 30 Su-35 fighters worth more than two billion dollars. Ready-made aircraft are stored partly in Komsomolsk-on-Amur at KnAAZ, partly at the airfield of the LII named after M. M. Gromov in Zhukovsky.

Despite the readiness of the aircraft for transfer to the customer, the implementation of the agreement was frozen. Neither the Russian nor the Egyptian sides made any statements, but the maincause of disruption of supplybecame possible US sanctions against the leadership of Egypt for cooperation with Russia.

This option was possible due to the “Countering US Adversaries Through Sanctions Act”, introduced under Donald Trump as part of countering “the destabilizing activities of the Iranian, Russian and North Korean regimes.”

Asagency writesTasnim News, close military cooperation between Russia and Iran, "will further anger the West as Tehran and Moscow strengthen their defense and economic cooperation despite sweeping sanctions and coercive measures."

Iran has not acquired a single new strike aircraft in recent years, with the exception of a few Russian MiG-29 fighters in the 1990s. For Iran, the acquisition of a fighter such as the Su-35 is central to the country's defense. The United States and Israel may strike at Iran's nuclear facilities, which means that Tehran needs weapons capable of responding to a possible attack. Tasnim News reports that part of the combat aircraft will be deployed at the 8th Tactical Air Base of the Air Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is located in Isfahan.

The essence of the deal with Iran on the Su-35 is that the Russian army will receive a significant amount of missile and unmanned weapons in exchange for aircraft that have long been ready. The fact that the Russian military showed interest in Iranian UAVs, in July 2022declaredUS National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

According to him, the Russian delegation visited an airfield in central Iran at least twice in June-July 2022 to study attack drones. Satellite images of the Kashan airfield, south of Tehran, were shown, where UAVs capable of carrying precision-guided missiles were located.

Moreover, it is planned not only to supply ready-made kamikaze drones and strike UAVs, but also to localize their production in Russia, they also talk about the supply of Iranian ballistic missiles that the IRGC units used against IS militants in Syria and as part of attacks on American and Kurdish bases in Iraq.

"Given the urgent need for the regular destruction of infrastructure and military facilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including in Western Ukraine, and the need for urgent replenishment of their own stocks, the acquisition of Iranian weapons is the most logical option," writes Rybar in his telegram channel.

Which totally ignores the fact that Russia already has drones based on Iranian designs already in production, which are the drones the Orcs keep complaining about at the moment.

This is more western propaganda suggesting Russia is running out of drones out of ammo out of missiles... is a gas station that has no production capacity.

Russia and Iran appear to be cooperating and Russia of course will always be interested in looking at the designs of other countries UAVs and UCAVs... most of their larger designs actually look similar to western designs with a similar role and purpose... it is no surprise at all.

I rather suspect the announcement of Su-35s for Iran might coincide with a western escalation... like Patriot missiles becoming operational in Orc land, or perhaps the arrival of modern aircraft or modern armour for the Orcs might lead to Russia announcing new aircraft for Iran and perhaps North Korea and Cuba... depending on the vehicles and aircraft the Orcs get perhaps including Onyx missiles for anti ship use too for both countries, would be quite potent despite being previous generation so local production included in the deal.

It will be interesting... the real problem as I see it is the back peddling the west will do might result in such announcements leading to problems...

What if Russia announces new aircraft and missiles for Iran to DEFEND ITSELF, leading to the West behind closed doors offering to cut Kiev completely from western money and weapons if they don't deliver... that puts Russia in a difficult position because if they stiff Iran who will trust them ever again, but then the west can't really be trusted and who is to say they wont break the deal after Iran has realised it can never trust Russia again and resume support for Kiev once they have broken relations between Russia and Iran.

I would hope Russia understands it can never trust the west ever again and will just follow through with its promises.

The article is trash because, in all these vaunted stories, still not a single shred of evidence shows that the drones came from Iran. I do not believe a picture had surfaced so far with Ukrainians showing the parts that are made in Iran.

To further the point, some less than intelligent people here were even saying missiles from Iran had landed in Russia to be used against Ukraine.....many months ago with not only no evidence at all, but no iota of proof of it being used.

The narrative being pushed by many here, many on telegram and fake "patriots" of Russia is that Iran is apparently technologically superior to Russia and capable building more advanced and more of, military gear than Russia.

I even had a debate with a telegram person (cyberspec who I lost all respect for) that he apparently believes Iran had better: Kevlar, better optics and chips than Russia.

I pointed out that Russia is only 1 of 4 nations that can produce microbolometers that are used in thermal imagers. Iran isn't 1 of those 4. They import theirs from China. Iran at best can produce a SPARC processor of 240nm. And there is no way that Iran somehow advanced further than Russia whom is at par with most in the west in composites.

It's a narrative pushed by the west and the very people who vaunt themselves to be "smarter" and "Not liars like the west who lies" push the narrative the US has been claiming in their "intelligence" reports.

    Pathetic beyond anything really.

This is nothing with regards to technological superiority though. It is just that Russia did not invest in some categories of weapons for whatever reason. And the long range suicide drones and shorter range ballistic missiles are some of those. They probably thought it made no sense because they already had the capability with cruise missiles and Iskander. But those are just not as cost effective in the Ukraine scenario. It is as simple as that.

And, pray tell, which missiles did Iran send to Russia and Russia use in Ukraine?

I've been waiting for an answer for months with proof, and not a shred of it.

Even Smoothie pointed out this nonsense.

Iran denied it too but no one believes them. Yet everyone believes USA and Ukraine. How strange.

I'm assuming everyone then believes Russia is importing North Korean rockets and artillery shells too.
