Tests have shown that Sarin or similar nerve agent was used in the Syrian town of Khan Sheykhun, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said in a press release. Based on testing of the dead and survivors of the incident.
Tests prove nothing about who is responsible for the attack.
So that's the purpose of the parachutes, to give the planes enough time to get aaway from the shockwave? Wow, anyone in underground structures, tunnels etc. is most definitely fooked then... jeeze louise.
The parachute allows the aircraft delivering the weapons to escape the blast, but these are thermobaric weapons, so unless the tunnels are open, the vapour explosive would not penetrate underground... these are blast weapons that would efficiently blow down buildings and structures on the surface, and would consume oxygen in the area of the explosion but would not be very efficient at penetrating bunkers or tunnels unless it actually entered a tunnel and exploded inside.
The parachute makes them explode verticaly on the ground for max effect at the expense of precision that's why they are flying low.
Actually parachute retarded bombs are not inaccurate. The ballistic path of the bombs are just as predictable as dumb iron bombs unless the parachute fails. the deceleration rate can be calculated and the impact point calculated as accurately as a standard bomb.
Also exploding almost or actually vertically is really only useful for HE Frag bombs, for a thermobaric bomb the explosive material is spread and then detonated... the angle of the shell casing would have little effect on the performance of the bomb.
With a low velocity round like a mortar bomb with a high trajectory the near vertical path of the bomb gives a nice circular regular pattern for fragments which makes them more effective compared with a round from a gun which might come in at an angle because it is the sides of the shell that are prefragmented and not the nose or rear.
In this situation the aircraft probably delivered from a safe altitude so the parachute served no practical purpose. It would have altered the ballistic path of the bomb but that would have been compensated for by the bomb release calculations so the effect on accuracy would be low or nothing.
Interesting, so basically we have a WADA situation here, and as a bonus, this agency is currently being headed by a Turk, Ahmet Üzümcü..... great.
I have very low expectations from western muppets these days.
The truth is ignored if it ever surfaces anyway so I have learned not to listen.
BTW nice vids in post 435 above... note the second video the two bombs that went off close together to the right of the image you can see the first to hit the ground exploded and actually set off the bomb coming in beside it while it was a few metres above the ground... this suggests impact fuses rather than air burst or penetration settings.
In the first video the amount of time the bombs spent in flight on parachutes suggests they bombs were dropped from a high altitude... not ideal, but they are very effective bombs for a wide range of soft targets.
I would expect due to the time they took to fall that they were likely dropped from above 1,000m which means they were probably ODAB-500PMV, which have parachutes, but are designed to be dropped from 200-12,000m. They can also be dropped from helos...
