lol! yesterday when I posted vice article on Chinese supercavitating sub and russian shkval being called as BS . I guess someone from Russia was reading it !

The new Russian torpedo: ‘Skhval’ 2.0?

Shamil Aliev, Chief designer at Dagdiesel factory in southern Russia’s sunny Daghestan, announced on a sunny morning that his company was working on building “high precision underwater weapons.”

He mentioned special features incorporated in the new torpedo; high noise immunity, artificial intelligence, and a digital control system; but Aliev declined to speak about other details, citing the secrecy of the programme. These weapons, he said, would combine in themselves reconnaissance, observation, and misguidance functions along with the means for direct destruction.

I was just recently wondering about the progress of Admiral Nakhimov. Does anyone have any updates on the work being done?

Actually I was thinking about drone submarines and realised... there is no reason they have to be filled with air like a manned sub... as such you could design an unmanned sub that is near impossible to destroy with conventional weapons.

Most western torpedoes have been designed with a shaped charge warhead which punches a fairly small hole in the side of the sub and the water pressure does the rest, but with a water filled sub it would punch a hole in the side but not really do much else. In other words it would have to hit and destroy something like propulsion or weapons or sensors to actually do some damage and with a fairly big robot sub it might get hit dozens of times without hitting anything critical...

Interesting thought...but it would need still some air in it to sustain its depth and not to sink to the ground like a stone.

Indeed butt amount is significantly smaller and because of relatively small hull probably can be much stronger. Instead of break the hull it can be just pushed away. If electronic will be shock resistant nothin serious shall happen.

The Russian Navy by 2020 will receive a large landing ship of the new generation

    So helicopter carrier underway ?

MOSCOW, June 11 - RIA Novosti. The Navy Russia by 2020 will replenish a large landing ship (BDK) of new generation, said Thursday the head of the ship of the Russian Navy captain Vladimir rag-pickers.

In Kaliningrad Shipyard "Yantar" on Thursday, an official ceremony for the first batch BDK project 11711 titled "Peter Morgunov."

"In the next 5 years will be deployed construction of a new generation of large amphibious ships ... The first such large landing ship is planned to build by 2020" - said the rag-pickers.

He added that the next generation of ships will greatly exceed the BDK is now under construction on the tonnage and desantovmestimosti and will be able to carry on board one, but several helicopters.

It could be built neutrally buoyant, with a few compressed air cylinders filled with liquid nitrogen that could fill bags with nitrogen gas when surfacing is required...

Note most submarines are vulnerable because the insides contain air which is easily compressible... compared with the water outside the vessel which does not compress.

the result is devastating because when the warhead explodes against the hull of the sub the metal behind the point of the explosion can easily compress inwards while the huge mass of water behind the explosive charge on the outside of the sub is not compressible and reflects the explosion back into the hull of the sub.

Double hulled subs can have water on both sides of the outer hull so the outer metal hull is supported by several metres of incompressible water behind it, but a single hull has compressible air which of course immediately collapses and compresses... followed by a flood of water at high pressure...

and will be able to carry on board one, but several helicopters.

    Sounds like Mistral II.

That's true, heared about a method they used with TV's in oil containers for forest workers in brazil where the humidity percentage is so high that most TV's would short circuit themselfs.

Sorry if anyone has posted it and I failed to notice that...

    http://thediplomat.com/2015/06/how-the-ukraine-crisis-interrupts-putins-naval-dreams/

Basically the article's opinion is this: Russia is depending on a number of Ukrainian parts of the shipbuilding sector, and a bad Russo-Ukraina relationship is harming the proccess of building Russian Navy.

Russia developing fifth-generation nuclear subs — design bureau

According to him, the new boats will be built within the timeframe approved by the military shipbuilding programme for the period until 2050

PARK PATRIOT (Moscow region), June 16. /TASS/. Russia’s Malakhit Marine Engineering Design Bureau (St. Petersburg) is already working on the project for the construction of fifth-generation nuclear submarines, the company’s CEO Vladimir Dorofeyev told TASS on Tuesday.

"The work on the fifth generation of submarines is already underway. The project will be implemented after the Yasen nuclear submarine construction project is completed," he said.

According to him, the new boats will be built within the timeframe approved by the military shipbuilding programme for the period until 2050.

Dorofeyev said that the fifth-generation submarines will be based on the network centric system. The boats’ dimensions and speed, although remaining significant parameters, will cease to be of prime importance. "The reactor [of the subs] will be certainly based on new principles, but there will be no revolution, and it is not needed after all," he added.

According to him, another important feature will be the new submarine’s coating and new technology of its production.

In March, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Viktor Chirkov told reporters that the navy men had already commissioned the defence industry to develop fifth-generation nuclear submarines.

    Nice, Mack.

Not being a Russian speaker, is this simply a design concept, or is it likely this will form a concrete basis for a domestic vessel class to replace the Mistrals?

It has an interesting hull shape below the waterline.

There's a bit more info on the ship from http://forums.airbase.ru

Project "Priboj" by Neva design bureau

    (initial estimates):

    - 14 000t displacement
    - max speed: 20 knots
    - range: 6000 nautical miles (can remain 60 days at sea)
    - airwing: 8 x helicopters
    - 4 x landing craft pr. 11770 Serna or 2 x pr. 12061 Murena hovercraft
    - can transport up to 60 vehicles
    - Pantsir-M airdefence system

The decision to build the ship will be taken after the completion of the project. The General Command of the Navy expects that for the needs of the Russian fleet will be built at least four such ships.
