The pocket seems to be closed. As habitually, likely empty of ISIS at this point, likely to fall in a few days.

Re: Syrian War: News #16
There are probably quite a few ISIS operatives in that grey area east of the river. Given the move of the Tigers to the west it doesn't look as if the SAA is going to build a bridge to get them. So either its going to motor down the river into Iraq and cross at the first standing bridge and then strike north, perhaps with Iraqi units or its going to leave them to the SDF to 'deal' with. Whatever that means!

I've said it many times in the past and will say it again that still don't have a section for the African continent which is shocking but it looks in the future we will need one.

"TRIBES ARMY: NEW PRO-GOVERNMENT FORCE APPEARS IN SOUTHERN SYRIA."
"On December 4, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) formed a new force named “Tribes Army” in the southern Daraa governorate, according to Syrian oppositions sources. The Tribes Army will allow former fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in southern Syria to join its ranks according to the sources.
The Syrian pro-government newspaper al-Watan said that the Tribes Army will be led by Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Rifai. Over 160 former FSA fighters and commanders from Daraa have already joined the new force, according to the source.
Syrian opposition activists from Daraa revealed that most of the Tribes Army fighters defected from the al-Omari Brigades, one of the biggest FSA groups in southern Syria. In an official statement, the al-Omari Brigades acknowledged that “only few” of its fighters and commanders defected to the pro-government Tribes Army.
This is the second pro-government force to be formed by the SAA in southern Syria in the last few months. In November, the SAA established a local force known as the “133 Brigade” in Izra town in the northern Daraa countryside.
The SAA is likely forming these new local forces in order to aid it in any future military operations there. Especially that the SAA suffered from a series of setbacks in Daraa governorate in 2017."

Very specific targetting that resulted in a large explosion. The buildings highlighted no longer exist. A strike at 23.30 at night to minimise casualties and Syrian response?

Still many ISIS to hunt down or redeploy. For some reason the US is objecting to the RuAF trying to do it east of the river.

Qassem Soleimani’s letter to the US: Leave Syria or else!
Could Al-Hasaka 2018 become Beirut 1983?
By Elijah J. Magnier
Well informed sources have said the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp Brigadier General Haj Qassem Soleimani sent a verbal letter, via Russia, to the head of the US forces commander in Syria, advising him to pull out all US forces to the last soldier “or the doors of hell will open up”.
“My message to the US military command: when the battle against ISIS (the Islamic State group) will end, no American soldier will be tolerated in Syria. I advise you to leave by your own will or you will be forced to it”, said Soleimani to a Russian officer. Soleimani asked the Russian responsible to expose the Iranian intentions towards the US: that they will be considered as forces of occupation if these decide to stay in north-east Syria where Kurds and Arab tribes cohabit together.
The Russians are not against the US presence and can adapt to this after defining the demarcation lines to avoid any clash. But Iran has a clear position and has decided not to abandon the Syrian President alone to face the US forces, if these stay behind.
Soleimani’s letter to the US clearly indicated the promise of ‘surprise measures’ against the US: ” You shall face soldiers and forces you have not experienced before in Syria and you will leave the country sooner or later”.
Russia conveyed to the US that Iran will stay in Syria as long as President Assad decides, he who insists in liberating the entire territory from all forces without exception. Russia confirmed to the US its intention to refrain from offering any air support to Iran and its allies in the case of attacks on US forces. From the Russian perspective, the Iran-US dispute is not its concern nor on its agenda.
Mike Pompeo, the US central Agency Director, said last week that he had sent a letter to Soleimani expressing his concern about Iran’s intention to attack American interests and “will hold Soleimani and Iran accountable for any attack in Iraq”.
Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, a senior aid to the Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei confirmed Pompeo’s attempt to send a letter but said “Soleimani refused to read it or to take it because he has nothing further to add”.
Sources in the area believe it is not unlikely that Kurdish groups – operating in al-Hasaka and who are faithful to the government of Damascus – are willing to be spearheaded against the US forces. Many of these groups remained loyal to Syria: they reject any occupation forces on its land or the partition of the country.
Al-Hasaka 2018 is being widely referred to, those 1983 events where hundreds of US Marines and French paratroopers were killed following double suicide attacks by Islamists in Beirut. The multinational forces became hostile rather than peacekeepers and were pushed to leave Lebanon in a rush as a consequence of this attack. The future could well mirror these past events.

OT: So the US has exposed the F-22 to full profiling by Russian forces. Russia now knows the stealth capacity of the F-22 on an
intimate basis after probing it with various EM spectra from multiple aspects. I guess the Americans are just so full of hubris that
they are literally idiots. Using the F-22 in the role outlined above is breathtakingly inane. Just send up some F-18 to do the same
task and don't give away your precious stealth secrets.

Headline says "SU-35" but picture accompanying the headline is of an SU-30. Article goes on to call the SU-35 a "bomber" and then an "interceptor."

The Tigers (officially) redeploying to Hama/Idlib
Elite Syrian Army division to officially enter Idlib offensive
BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:10 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army’s elite Tiger Forces division has officially begun leaving the Deir Ezzor Governorate for the northeastern countryside of Hama, a military source told Al-Masdar News this afternoon.
According to the source, the Tiger Forces are headed to the Ma’an axis in the Hama Governorate, where they will make their push towards the key town of Abu Dali.
Abu Dali is strategic to the Syrian Army’s High Command because of the important crossroad that is located inside the town.
Once Abu Dali is captured, the Syrian Arab Army’s Tiger Forces will make their first major push into the Idlib Governorate.

Syrian Army’s elite Tiger Forces to be deployed on unexpected front
BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:14 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army’s most elite formation, having just finished combat operations in eastern Syria, is now moving to the country’s northwest in order to conduct a new offensive.
According to military sources exclusive to Al-Masdar News, The Syrian Army’s elite Tiger Forces Division is to not be deployed to northern Hama as was initial believed, but rather to the Khanassir axis.
Based on this, it is most likely the case that Tiger Forces will assist other army and pro-government units in the area to advance on and capture the strategic Abu Duhur military airport which has been under the control of jihadist militias for several years now.
The main opponent that the Tiger Forces will encounter is the Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda) terrorist group who commands the bulk of anti-government fighters in the area.

"The F-22 launched decoy flares and used airbrakes while constantly maneuvering [near the Russian strike jets], imitating an air fight,” Konashenkov said. He added that the US jet ceased its dangerous maneuvers only after a Russian Su-35S fighter jet joined the two strike planes."

I suspect the Russians did not support SDF battles, but rather bombed to oblivion concentrations of IS getting ready to move out comfortably, as they do in SDF areas.
You deploy them.

Why does the Syrian opposition still talk like it has a strong bargaining position? The way things are going, fairly soon there won't be much opposition left.
