Austin wrote:The proposed deal between two of the leading power brokers in Syria's devastating civil war was set out by Saudi intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last week, they said.

Russia has supported Assad with arms and diplomatic cover throughout the war and any change in Moscow's stance would remove a major obstacle to action on Syria by the United Nations Security Council.

Syrian opposition sources close to Saudi Arabia said Prince Bandar offered to buy up to $15 billion of Russian weapons as well as ensuring that Gulf gas would not threaten Russia's position as a main gas supplier to Europe.

In return, Saudi Arabia wanted Moscow to ease its strong support of Assad and agree not to block any future Security Council Resolution on Syria, they said.

A Gulf source familiar with the matter confirmed that Prince Bandar offered to buy large quantities of arms from Russia, but that no cash amount was specified in the talks.
    Putin should have done a
    "THIS.

judo-kick and sent that corrupt hell-spawn free-falling back down into the abyss from whence he came.

Btw, there are some details regarding the syrian S-300PMU2 deal in MMZ Avantgard latest annual report (2012). Any idea if they are actually receiving the gear, or the deal it's stalled/ cancelled now ? Thanks.

Wasn't there some promise of a 20 billion deal if Russia would help against Iran by letting through sanctions.

If I recall that turned into a 60 billion contract to the US.

nothing to do with our deal with them, they wanted mostly land based weaponary from us BMP3 etc. etc.

the Us deal is a separate one, mostly aircrafts/fighter/helicopters

It would be naive to trade off Strategic Intrest with any amount of money , Else countries who look up to Russia for support would have little faith in it.

The goal of Saudi is to capture Syria and then to encircle Iran and weaken it. Something not in the interest of Russia.

Iran has clearly stated that it would support Syria as long as Russia supports it clearly putting a lot of faith in Russia ability to resolve Syria crises.

Eventually the Saudi support Sunni terrorist and they would end up in chechnia fighting the Russian Army of Syria were to fall to them.

And Saudi salafi version of islam and their priests where the one because of whome Chechen people resolved to suicide bombing and all other kind of atrocities.

Saudi are sending those priest to preach salafi islam everywhere and thats the main problem.

Here's a video shot by a guy near that same HMG. It appears only the SD card survived the blast. The bandits on the gun looked like a real bunch of winners. I honestly don't know who's more stupid, the guys trying to shoot down a MiG with an HMG, or the guy in the truck who gave away their position.

With US and UK preparing for a strike against syria, even before info regarding chemical strike comes out, this should alarm Russia. Slowly, but surely, Russia's partners are being snuffed off and Russia will eventually stand alone. Eventually, the west will turn their attention to Russia, and that is what scares me.

Russia is doing themselves no favour by not supporting Assad with the equipment he needs. Regardless, Russia will be viewed as incompetent by some and or the enemy by others. Look at libya as an example: Russia agreed to the no fly zone, and now they get no dealings with that country cause the western backed thugs think Russia did not help them.

Seriously, Russian gov. Do something now or forever to lose friends, gain more enemies and eventually end up cornered.

It is true what you say but there is another aspect to it. Very Happy

    1. Whatever US did (it was with the purpose to get rid Russia of its allies) - it created mayhem causing more problems than solutions
    2. Whatever US did caused more harm to itself than to Russia (economy in shambles, moral authority highly in question, etc)
       - do not want to post data or return gold to other countries (Germany)
       - NSA problems
       - wikileaks problems
       - prosecution of whistleblowers
       - execive use of police force (OWS)
       - Guantanamo bay problem
       - Siding with AQ in Syria and MB in Qatar
       - torture and disregard for civilians in Iraq and Afganistan by its solders
       - drone attacks on civilians
       - huge debt, unemployment because of it
       - pushing China in the military, political and economy alliance with Russia (biggest ever bonus for Russia)
       - pushing Iraq in the political and economy (eventually even military) alliance with Iran
       - pushing Pakistan in the political, economy and military alliance with China
       - pushing Egypt in the arms of Russia and China
       - (Bolivia, Venezuela, Urugvaj, Brasil, Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay) all highly critical of USA
       - Making Iran, Venezuela, Syria, enemies for life, problem of N.Korea not solved
      - Mass media propaganda exposed CNN, FOX News, NBC, Al Jazerra, Al Arabia etc - emergance of RT, CCVT, PresTV
      - Failed orange revolutions and NGO in former SSSR states
      - Emergance of EuroAsian Union (single biggest US nightmare) - did not managed to stop it
       - Lybia in total mess (breakup most likely)
       - Serbia returning under strong Russian influence again
       - reduced military spending on its own forces
       - oil prices went ballistic because of US intervention allowing Russia strong initial growth and thats the success story in progress
       - because of military retreat from Afganistan all countries of Central Asia returning under Mother Russia influence
      - Im sure I forgot something ....

only thing that Russia is left to do on its own is to make Ukraine fall back in line     Very Happy

    Well said but..

Ukraine will never fall back to Russia till Ukraine has a real change in politics and sees true hardship.

Anyway, Russia is losing tartus and their med fleet is screwed to find a refueling facility outside Russia. Now US has enclosed Russia and effectively defeated Russias ability to have a place outside their territory for a base. As well, many countries will see Russia's weakness and end up fleeing them into the arms of the US so they dont end up in the same fate as Assad will.

Tartus is hardly a big deal for Russia. It barely used it before.

Losing Syria won't be a huge loss at the end of the day. If Russia cared that much they would have commited more to Assad long ago, even if it looked bad.

As well, many countries will see Russia's weakness and end up fleeing them into the arms of the US so they dont end up in the same fate as Assad will.
So what if Russia loses basing rights in Tartus to be honest Russian activity in the Med is not that critical anyway.

As long as they hold Murmansk and the Kurile islands they will have sea access via their north sea and pacific fleets.

I am sure Vietnam will be interested in seeing the Russian Navy back at Cam Rahn Bay at some stage and I suspect Cuba would love to see a return of the Russian Navy and an increase in trade.

The US and UK have established themselves as the world bully... though they will claim to be world police. They have crushed Syria, but then Syria wasn't a very close ally of Russia and was actually reaching out to the west much like Syria was too, so when Gaddafi fell... not much changed... though a few contracts were lost, but that is nothing new.

If Assad falls it will not be good for Russia and more importantly it wont be good for Syria, but at the end of the day Assads mistake was not his friendship with Russia but his attempts to befriend the west.

If Assad has an ally then it is Iran who needs to use its local strength to keep Assad in power and prevent interventions from the west.
Can it do it? who knows... even Russia couldn't stop the western interventions in Kosovo and Syria, though it had the power in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and there were no western interventions there...

At the end of the day the US will intervene where it likes and it is not up to Russia to stop them... the US is a loose cannon and Russia is not going to take up the useless job of forcing it back into the holster.

If the US and UK want to invade here or there that is up to them and reflects on them alone. For the other countries watch the lesson should be to pay attention to your own air defence and sort your own sht out before the embargo is put in place and you can't get any weapons to defend yourself from all those western oil companies.

Hope Syrian Air Force could down some US F-15, F-16, F-18, as it did during the 70's, and 80's with israelis F-15.
It is said that russian air force could participated with syrian pilots.
US can no longer sustain the same iraq war, as undoubtly Iran -with chinese/russian hardwares- is going to parcipate .
As US and UK are in bankrupcy, I don't know how they will do another war.

“US Backed Plan to Launch Chemical Weapon Attack on Syria and Blame it on Assad Government”

The Mail was later sued by Britam Defense, and forced to publish a retraction. The Guardian reported on June 26th:

“The Daily Mail has apologised and paid £110,000 in libel damages to a London defence firm it wrongly linked with an alleged chemical weapons plot in Syria.

Britam Defence Limited complained that an article on the Daily Mail’s website Mail Online falsely accused two of its executives of conspiring in a “nefarious and illegal plot” in the Middle Eastern state “for enormous financial reward”.

The article quoted one email supposedly sent between two executives at the company which claimed to show that Britam had agreed to supply chemical weapons to Homs for use in an attack. However, the emails turned out to be forged.”

One of the original leaks which led to this brief, but buried story, was contained in the Britam Leaks, which detailed the alleged plan to be carried out which was said to have received a green light from Washington and was to be financed by Qatar.

Although a libel settlement was reached regarding naming the two Britam executives mentioned in the Mail article, it’s hard to prove that the plot itself did not happen – and herein lies the problem with the secretive shadow state and its array of private contractors in both the US and UK.

Assad may get the last laugh on the west though. If NATO deposes him, and puts up a FSA-backed government, it is almost certainly going to be a Wahhabist one. And once they are in power, they are going to turn on their western (for them read Christian/infidel) 'partners'. Its going to be like Afghanistan and the Mujaheddin all over again.
