TR1 wrote:Assad is directly responsible for ordering and prosecuting a crackdown that has killed tens and tens of thousands of his countrymen (and NO they were mostly NOT Islamist)....not as bad?!?!
And just WHAT actually happened there? Do you know? Do you know anyone that does know?
Because from the tidbits that I saw it was some protests and then just a bunch of tanks of all of sudden, coupled with armed insurrection, snipers, etc...
Reading about it now on wiki I can see such things as - people arrested for protesting, protests dispersed violently, tear gas used, etc... there was also live fire into crowds and protestors on numerous occassions; but the numbers of killed in each such case were less than a dozen, sometimes just a few. No tens of thousands here.
And then after that there began to be reports of armed gangs, military sealing off areas, etc...
More than anything, it looks like the sort of chaos that preceded and followed the fall of the USSR and especially the fall of the socialist regimes in Eastern Europe; not some Saddam Hussein style gassing of the Kurds.
Take a look for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Syrian_Civil_War_%28January%E2%80%93April_2011%29
The guy is a piece of shit of the first degree. And he has 100% himself to blame for putting his country in the shitter over the past 3 years.
I'm not trying to change your opinion about the matter. But perhaps my perspective can be of some use.
Everyone knows and has been saying for some time now - that here really aren't any good guys in this conflict. They all have blood on their hands.
This war is not about good & evil.
But what it is about now - is law & disorder, organisation vs. anarchy. Assad represents law, stability, whatever you want to call it - flawed as it is it would still be light years better than the dissarray, dismemberment, secterianism, ethnic cleansing, rise of fundamentalism that WILL take hold in Syria if anyone but Assad wins the war
No matter how undemocratic and medieval Saudi Arabia is, that fact won't change.
Saudi Arabia did the same thing in Bahrain; it's just that they did it so brutally and efficiently that no-one had any thoughts about resisting further.
Guess they took a few pointers from Stalin.
The Syrians cracked down too; which is brutal and immoral.
And when it comes to cracking down, using force against your own people - then you have to do it with the right amount of force.
The Syrians were way too soft.

When was the last time a regime in power resigned because a few thousand people out of a population of several million were protesting because they were not happy?
Both sides need to take responsibility for those killed in this conflict and more importantly the international community... particularly the sunni arab world and the west should take the brunt of the blame... if they were not putting money into this and egging the opposition on it is very unlikely it would have continued and escalated the way it did.
It is like the Georgian invasion of South Ossetia... suck arse milli vanilli would never have attacked Russian peacekeeping forces if he thought he had no support from the west in general and the US and EU in particular.
Perhaps if they had made it clear they would not interfere that he might not have given the order to murder all those people.
Of course If is the biggest word in the English language... without that wakeup call the Russian government and Putin likely would have just payed lip service to the military and given promises rather than hard cash and real attention.
It made them realise they could not rely on the international community or international institutions even against a minor threat... imagine if it was a NATO country that was the problem... they need the muscle to sort things out for themselves and that is what they are doing now and have been doing for some time and will be doing for some time to come.

I think, that some Frenchies are angry at SNC for failing to gather up FSA factions in Geneva (out of 22 promised, only 8 came), at least that's how I understand that.

...On top of that, the mere fact that they're discussing about cooperation with arms trafficking out in the open for all to hear, is simply ridiculous!!! Under most circumstances arms trafficking would be considered extremely illegal, but this has changed when the U.N. is being lead by the lame duck Ban Ki Moon. All the U.N.'s talk about controlling arms trafficking world-wide, is becoming more-and-more discredited and irrelevant, before it was the U.N's apparent (probably illegal) association with the infamous arms trafficker Victor Bout, and now we have Ban Ki Moon's pathetic appeasement of NATO's outrageous arms trafficking to Syria. I'm predicting within 25-50 years from now that if there is no tectonic shift in business, and things keep continuing as they are, the U.N. may suffer the same demise as the League of Nations.

Ban Ki Moon was of course favoured by America in his day for the position. Wonder why.
Although pretty much just a figurehead, he has his functions, and within their limits does what he can to tilt towards the US position ever so imperceptibly.

Of course. The one who controls world's economy also control's world's diplomacy.
Diplomacy is nothing else than speaking politely and assertively with saying nothing of substance and then, secretly or openly, paying your way in solving matters your way.
So much about this diplomacy crap, huh!

They lecture about human rights, but I guess preventing cruel and unusual punishment and maintaining due process aren't one of them.

I haven't been following Syria as closely as I usually do, primarily due to developments in Ukraine.
However, the latest news is that the key rebel stronghold of Yabrud has been taken by the SAA today. A crushing defeat for opposition in the Qalamoun area.

Re: Syrian Civil War: News
Could this quite possibly be a false provocation attempt by Turkey to capture Syrian territory? "An operation against ISIL has international legitimacy. We will define it as al Qaeda. There are no issues on the al Qaeda framework. When it comes to the Suleyman Shah tomb, it's about the protection of national soil," a voice presented as that of foreign ministry undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu says.":
Turkey says leaked recording of Syria meeting a 'wretched attack'
Turkey's foreign ministry said on Thursday the leaking of a recording purportedly of top officials discussing possible military operations in Syria was a "wretched attack" on national security and those behind it would receive the heaviest punishment.
In a written statement the ministry said some sections of the recording - presented on an anonymous YouTube account as Turkey's intelligence chief discussing Syria with the foreign minister and deputy head of the armed forces - had been manipulated.
Chief advisor to Turkish President Ahmet Sever denied media reports that the National Security Council (MGK) is set to have an emergency meeting to discuss the leaked voice recording.
In the voice recording Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Undersecretary Hakan Fidan, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu and Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Güler are heard discussing possible intervention into Syria and possible reactions from the world.
The posting follows similar releases on social media in recent weeks which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has cast as a plot orchestrated by his political enemies to undermine him ahead of March 30 elections.
Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the recording, potentially the most damaging purported leak so far as it appeared to have originated from the bugging of a highly confidential and sensitive conversation.
The foreign ministry was not immediately available to comment while the military could not immediately be reached.
The YouTube account presents the recording as being of intelligence chief Hakan Fidan discussing with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Deputy Chief of Staff Yaşar Güler and other officials a possible operation to secure the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, in an area of northern Syria largely controlled by militant Islamists.
Ankara regards the tomb as sovereign Turkish territory under a treaty signed with France in 1921, when Syria was under French rule. About two dozen Turkish special forces soldiers permanently guard it.
Turkey threatened two weeks ago to retaliate for any attack on the tomb, after clashes between militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an al Qaeda breakaway group, and rival rebel groups in the area, east of Aleppo near the Turkish border.
"An operation against ISIL has international legitimacy. We will define it as al Qaeda. There are no issues on the al Qaeda framework. When it comes to the Suleyman Shah tomb, it's about the protection of national soil," a voice presented as that of foreign ministry undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu says.
When the discussion turns to the need to justify such an operation, the voice purportedly of Fidan says: "Justification can be created. The matter is to create the will."
Turkish media also reported that the Foreign Ministry has started an investigation in the ministry building to find out how and by whom the meeting was recorded.
Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the incident of the leaked audio recording, officials said.
In his first comment on the leaked audio recording, Turkish Prime Minister has called the leak a wretched attack on national security and a treason against the country. Confirming the authenticity of the leaked recording, Erdoğan vowed action against those who were responsible for the leak.
