True, but the flu didn't really have much effect on economy considering the 1920s economy was so good it was called the Roaring 20s.

Apparently that one too came from China via 80-100,000 Chinese workers brought over to do the heavy lifting in France in the rear.

Russia reveals 70+ warships are deployed on combat missions across the world

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:00 A.M.) – The Russian Defense Ministry revealed that more than 70 Russian warships are currently performing combat missions in various seas and oceans.

“On the occasion of the glorious Easter holiday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, congratulated the crews of more than 70 Russian warships performing their combat missions in various regions of the world.”

The Ministry indicated that a dinner party was organized on Sunday for the military personnel who are serving on board these warships, submarines and support ships.

Most recently, the Russian Navy conducted large-scale drills in the Baltic, Mediterranean, and Black seas, as they continue to showcase their naval strength across the world.

During these five months, the ship actively solved the tasks of its mission in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, providing tracking of the groupings of ships of the NATO bloc. Returning to the Black Sea on 04/21/2020, the ship continued to solve its mission, then arriving at the Sevastopol raid at the anchor point, the crew underwent a medical examination in connection with the quarantine regime.

American and British ships in the Barents Sea

May 5, 2020. Under the cut photo of a naval strike group of four US Navy ships and a British naval ship in the Barents Sea, during the so-called “operation to ensure maritime security in difficult environmental conditions beyond the Arctic Circle and assert freedom of navigation and demonstrate uninterrupted combat operations "

The ship’s strike group includes three American destroyers of the Arleigh Burke type, equipped with the AEGIS integrated multifunctional weapon system - DDG 75 Donald Cook, DDG 78 Porter and DDG 80 Roosevelt. The group also includes the American integrated supply ship T-AOE 6 Supply and the British frigate F 78 Kent type 23.


According to bmpd colleagues, this is the first entrance to the U.S. Navy surface warship squad in the Barents Sea since the mid-1980s.

On May 6, 2020, the press service of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy announced that the missile cruiser of project 1164 “Marshal Ustinov” left the main base of the Northern Fleet - Severomorsk in the Barents Sea to work out the planned tasks of combat training ... The firing area will be closed for shipping and flight aviation. "

It is noted that the launch of a missile cruiser at sea will last several days. The crew will perform a series of artillery firing at sea and air targets at the naval training ranges of the fleet.

Yanks and their limey satraps poking their fat noses into the Barents Sea? Maybe the PtG needs to conduct an urgent sortie into the Gulf of Mexico to assert "freedom of navigation"? maybe buzz a few USN facilities along the way? If its good for the USN in the South China Sea I can't imagine the Pentagram could object to the RuN doing the same?

Speaking of Russian Frigates, The Burevestnik (Krivak) class Ladnyy is back in service after having her engines replaced by the ones from the Kara class cruiser Kerch (which is gone to the scrapyard).

The veteran Ladnyy will take part in the 9th of May festivities, she is now part of the line of ships anchored in the Sevastopol bay.

Of course they would. They are exceptional.

Interesting... I never realised that the low-power turbines on the 1134B were also used as the main turbines of the 1135. Yeah, that makes sense I guess.

as patrol ship and for additional antisub work it is probably ok, even if it is under armed for a modern frigate and it has a large complement of people in comparison to its capabilities.

The main advantages it has in comparison to a 22160 patrol ship is that Ladny has a sonar (by the way, does anyone knows if the sonar was updated?), torpedo tubes and antisub weapons (but I do not know if she can carry antisub helicopters)...

Anyway, it is a 40 years old antisub patrol ship, but it can still be useful for a few years until a proper replacement is built (either a proper frigate or even an antisub version of project 22160 patrol ship).

No helicopter.

Better than that. The RuN should invite the Chinese Navy to partake in an exercise in the Barents after traveling from China via the then ice free northern passage in the summer.

Then, a combined flotilla should cruise across the Atlantic to the Caribbean for a joint courtesy call in Cuba before traveling onto Venezuela. Then together they do a short tour of the Gulf of Mexico. If there happens to be a Russian submarine in the Gulf that the US hasn't spotted it could surface and say hello to the passing RuN cruiser. The sub would then travel home in noisy mode so the USN couldn't learn anything.

Then the Chinese peel off to the Panama Canal and thence home, cruising up 12 miles out from the US West Coast whilst the Russians pass between Florida and Cuba traveling home doing the same up the East Coast.

I suspect that the navy teams in the MoDs of Russia and China would love to plan that. Not sure if their leaders have the balls to do it. If they did can you imagine the US reaction? In election season! Mind you a dose of realism might do the Americans good.

Probably the biggest flaw in the first two Krivak versions was the lack of helicopter facilities... especially considering its primary armament is the anti sub SS-N-14 Metel.

The third class of Krivak ships removed the front mounted Metel launcher and replaced it with a 100mm gun, while the rear guns were replaced with a helicopter pad and facilities... ironically they were for border patrol in the KGB, so likely no sub hunting role there...

Yeah, krivak IV (taiwar class and grigorovich class) solved the problem, but now the russian navy can build also the more capable Gorshkov class.
As mentioned above,  20380 class is taking over the antisub role (and it carries an helicopter)... the only disadvantage is the reduced range and endurance (15 vs 30 days) in comparison to Krivak class.....

For that reason I mentioned an antisub variant of the smaller 22160, since it has a good endurance, but probably to have decent antisub capabilities you need to put there more people and modules (including sonars and dedicated electronics), thereby compromising the endurance

22160 has a good endurance probably because it is lightly armed...

Some news bits :

- The Georgy Kurbatov minesweeper will be launched during June 2020. This is the project 12700 vessel that burned at the plant during construction. The damage has been repaired.

- The 8th project 12700 minesweeper will be laid down this summer

- Yantar shipyard is building 2 project 11356 frigates for the Indian navy. These are the ex- Admirals Butakov and Istomin. It is now confirmed that they will have Ukrainian engines.

- The project 20380 corvette Retivy that was launched earlier this March is destined to the Black Sea fleet.

- A project 22160 class ship is very active in the East Mediterranean, it was seen recently in the port of Tartous, Syria. Probably the D. Rogachov.

- The veteran Smetlivy will no longer sail. She is now being fitted as a museum ship.

- The 7500 tons project 23700 Rescue vessel Voevoda will begin sea trials this fall.

- The Black Sea Fleet will receive the 3500 T project 03182 tanker Vice Admiral Pomarov at the end of this year or early next year.
