Tbilisi offers Washington a restart of relations and is waiting for corresponding steps, this meets bilateral interests, Kobakhidze believes. Earlier, the US imposed sanctions against Georgia for "human rights violations".
Georgia is proposing a restart of relations to the United States, which is equally in the interests of both countries, Prime Minister and Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze said at a press conference. His words are quoted by Interpressnews .
"We want to offer our American partners a different agenda, which means a reset. You know how much has gone wrong in these relations over the past three or four years. Against this background, Georgian-American relations need a reset," he said.
Kobakhidze called the statements of Republican Congressman Thomas Kean, who compared the Georgian Dream’s policy toward the opposition to “a dictatorship not typical of close partners of the United States,” counterproductive. During the House hearings, he also expressed hope for a manifestation of the unwillingness of voters in both Georgia and Moldova to “submit to the Kremlin’s wishes.”
"To reset relations, first of all, it is necessary to be fair. On our part, all possible steps will be taken to reset relations. The main thing is to see the steps taken by the US government," the Georgian Prime Minister said.
Relations between the United States and Georgia have worsened since the adoption of a law on foreign agents in the republic. It requires the registration of non-governmental organizations and media outlets whose foreign funding exceeds 20% of their annual income as "organizations implementing the interests of a foreign power." Opponents of this initiative call it "pro-Russian" due to its similarity to the law on foreign agents in Russia. Mass protests took place in Georgia during its consideration. The Kremlin denied information about Moscow's influence on this law. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili intends to challenge its adoption in the Constitutional Court.
The State Department warned that this law would hinder Georgia's European integration. The Venice Commission called it anti-democratic and allowed its use to suppress critics of the government. On June 6, the United States imposed visa restrictions on dozens of Georgian citizens who are considered to be involved in human rights violations.
