As always contract are awarded into a set year's framework but that's didn't means NEITHER that the production would be evenly distributed in said years, NOR that it would be just a single contract in the said timeframe.
As for an example the 88 consigned Su-35 are part of two different contracts, one of 48 , already completed, and another one of 50, still ongoing,all making part of the same time framework period.

Ok so it means that they will probably sign a new contract before those 14 will be all built...

Nevertheless, I am interested to see at what pace they will be able to build those aircrafts...

The same factory will also build the new Il-78M-90A tankers (which can be converted into a freighter) and the airframes for the A-100.

The way they do the contracts gives them flexibility... with Coronovirus they might start slow, but as problems and issues get solved they might speed up a little or a lot and depending on how it goes will determine what other contracts are signed and when.

They might get a huge export order for instance... and they will make rather more profit from export orders than they do for domestic military sales...

I don't normally get car sick or air sick or sea sick but I think that tail gunner position might make me feel unwell...

But totally agree with the front view lower nose navigator view position... that would just be totally awesome...

Another new aircraft Il-76MD-90A is in the air

Reportedly, on August 26, 2020 at the Ulyanovsk-Vostochny plant airfield complex, the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft with a factory number 0204 (registration number RF-78659). This is the second Il-76MD-90A aircraft of the new construction, taken into the air in 2020. The second Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft (serial number 0204, registration number RF-78659) built at Aviastar-SP JSC in 2020 before the start of flight tests. The start of flight tests of the Il-76MD-90A board with serial number 0204 was confirmed by the factory newspaper "Aviastar-SP" "Start" in the issue of September 4.

The Il-76MD-90A aircraft with serial number 0204 (registration number RF-78659) was deflated to the Aviastar-SP flight test station at the end of March 2020, but was first taken into the air only five months later - this is a clear evidence the fact that the production program for the Il-76MD-90A aircraft is still going with a "big creak".

The Il-76MD-90A aircraft with serial number 0204, which made its first flight on August 26, 2020, became the sixth board built by Aviastar-SP JSC in Ulyanovsk under a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense dated October 2012 for the production of 39 Il-76MD-90A units for the amount of 139.42 billion rubles, and the second, taken into the air in 2020.

Earlier on March 17, 2020, the first Il-76MD-90A aircraft built in 2020 with serial number 0203 (registration number RF-78658) made its maiden flight at the Ulyanovsk-Vostochny plant airfield complex , and it has not yet been handed over to the customer and continues "acceptance flying".

The first Il-76MD-90A aircraft, for the Russian Ministry of Defense under a 2012 contract with serial number 0108 (registration number RF-78654), was built at Aviastar-SP more than four years ago and was first flown there on December 15, 2015. and on January 17, 2016 he entered the 610th Center for Combat Use and Retraining of Flight Personnel of Military Transport Aviation named after Air Marshal N.S. Skripko in Ivanovo.

The second and third Il-76MD-90A aircraft under the 2012 contract were built by Aviastar-SP in 2018 and handed over to the Russian Ministry of Defense in the first half of 2019 - aircraft with serial numbers 0109 (registration number RF-78655, made the first flight in Ulyanovsk on November 7, 2018 and was transferred to the Russian Aerospace Forces on April 2, 2019) and 0110 (registration number RF-78656, madefirst flight on December 22, 2018, transferred to the Aerospace Forces on May 16, 2019). Both of these aircraft became part of the 235th military transport aviation regiment, formed at the end of 2017, of the 18th military transport aviation division of the Russian Aerospace Forces Military Transport Aviation, based at the Aviastar-SP Ulyanovsk-Vostochny plant airfield, becoming the first two IL-76MD-90A, delivered to the linear part of the Russian Aerospace Forces. On the same regiment I went then and only built in 2019 new aircraft Il-76MD-90A (fourth under the contract) - the side with the serial number 0202 (registration number RF-78657), raised in the air June 13, 2019 and transferred FSI Russia August 30, 2019.

Earlier, Aviastar-SP, under a contract dated November 2011, UAC - Transport Aircraft JSC built in 2014-2015 three Il-76MD-90A aircraft of the pilot batch with serial numbers 0103, 0104, 0105. The first two of them were transferred to PJSC The Beriev Taganrog Aviation Scientific and Technical Complex (TANTK) to create special-purpose vehicles on their basis, and the aircraft with the serial number 0105 was also transferred to the 610th TsBPPLS VTA in Ivanovo on December 3, 2015.

In addition, the first prototype of the Il-78M-90A tanker aircraft (serial number 0201, registration number RF-78741), developed by Il-PJSC on the basis of the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft, was also built at Aviastar-SP. and committedfirst flight in Ulyanovsk on January 19, 2018. However, after 11 months of improvements, only on December 27, 2018, the first prototype of the Il-78M-90A made its fourth test flight, officially credited as the first under the factory flight test program. This aircraft continues to be in the testing phase.

Thus, to date, the Aviastar-SP plant has built a total of ten copies (including the prototype) of the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft and one prototype of the Il-78M-90A tanker aircraft.

In May 2020 it became knownthat the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, on new terms, renewed the contract with Aviastar-SP JSC for the supply of Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft. Under the new conditions, under the old contract in 2012, the plant will now commission a total of 13 Il-76MD-90A aircraft, and from 2021 a new contract for the supply of 14 such aircraft until 2028 will enter into force. Is a PD-14 engine planned for the IL76?

Well, the PD14 offers a SFC improvement of around 14% in comparison to the PS90, and so, even with the increased drag due to the larger fan it should offer a considerable range increase.

However such design changes are not cheap, will require a costly and relatively lenght type certificate update and furthermore they will need a lot of new engines for civilian airliners production. It is possible that at least at the beginning they will not be able to produce enough engines to satisfy both civilian airliners and military cargo needs.

The PS90 is now a mature and reliable engine and good enough for the job.
It is possible that the PD14 /PD14/PD16 will be eventually introduced also in military cargo (maybe first starting with Il276 or Tu330) but I doubt it will be before it has at least 4 to 5 years of service experience.


If you think about it, embraer did the same with their cargo aircraft, the KC390... they are equipped with the IAE V2500 engine (the same one as in the first generation A320). Well, when they choose the engine in 2011 the PW1000 and the CFMLeap did not exist yet... but it would make no sense to change it now.... maybe in 2030...

I think to replace the PS-90 they would need to use the PD-14M engine which isn't available yet.
I think it would make sense to use that engine instead of the PS-90 for several reasons.

I do not see this as an issue with regards to starving orders for civilian airliner engines.
For one you could ramp up production of the PD-14 engine series with more orders.
The more engines ordered the more funding will become available to mass produce engines.
For another the PD-14M would increase range and payload.
The flight certification issues would probably be not that significant.
This is a military transport aircraft. Not a civilian transport aircraft.

The Il-76MD-90A is a deeply modernized version of the Il-76. Developer of the aircraft: PJSC Il is the parent company of the transport aviation division of PJSC UAC (part of rostec state Corporation), which includes JSC Aviastar-SP, where the aircraft is being mass-produced.

The upgraded version of the Il-76MD-90A is fundamentally different from its predecessor, the Il-76MD, despite the external similarity.

The Il-76MD-90A aircraft allows solving most of the tasks of military transport aviation at a qualitatively new technical level. This is ensured by the use of a number of modern design solutions on the aircraft that meet current and future operational requirements.

The aircraft is equipped with new, more powerful PS-90A-76 engines, which provide increased takeoff and landing and cruising characteristics, increased cargo capacity, longer flight range, increased fuel efficiency due to reduced fuel consumption and high environmental requirements for noise in the terrain and harmful substances emission.

On the new Il-76MD-90A, systems and units have been improved.

"On the Il-76MD-90A, almost all aircraft systems have been modernized: the wing and landing gear have been strengthened, which has made it possible to increase the carrying capacity and operational efficiency of the aircraft. On the previous Il-76 modification, the wing panels were made of two parts. The Il-76MD-90A wing panels are manufactured in one piece with a length of 25 meters. This has reduced the weight of the wing and increased the resource, as well as allowed to simplify the manufacturing technology," said Andrey Yurasov, chief designer of the Il – 76 and Il-78 of PJSC Il.

The chassis has been upgraded and is designed for a take-off weight of 210 tons (including 60 tons of load), as well as designed with a high margin of safety in mind. Thanks to this, the transport vehicle can be operated on equipped and non-equipped airfields, on concrete and unpaved runways. The new KT-199M wheels of increased power consumption were used, which will allow the aircraft to operate in the harshest climatic conditions at extremely low and high temperature conditions. The landing gear system has been upgraded to improve control, display and control on the ground and in flight.

The aircraft is created entirely from domestic components, equipped with domestic systems and equipment.

I thought for the Il-476s with 60 ton payloads and improved flight ranges they were going for something like a PD-16 or PD-18 sized engine and the PD-14 would be as a replacement for the older aircraft for simple upgrades where the improved fuel economy improves range but not MTOW or payload weights.

The engines with almost 18 tons of takeoff thrust (actually 17.4, are the PS-90A1,  an uprated version of the PS-90 with shorter maintenance intervals (the turbine discs and some other parts needs to be replaced more often) created for the enlonged version of the il96.

As far as I remember reading, the PS-90A-76 (the variant mounted on the il(4)76 Is rated at 14.5 tons of takeoff thrust (but can be uprated to 16 tons if needed according to this website)

The previous engines on the il-76,  the D30KP had 12 tons of takeoff thrust instead.

Butowski mentioned it. Maybe "planed" is to much. But the PS-90 will not be produced forever, in a few years they will look for a new one.

Until they rump up production of PD14, PD14M, PD18R etc and those engine accumulate enough experience, there will be still production of these engines. PS90 are also used in the il96 and in the Tu204.
Probably they are also cheaper than the PD14, so even if the consumption is 15% higher it will be acceptable for military or government use.

As an example, the new embraer transport plane is operating with 2 CFM56, and there are no plans to switch to the CFM Leap anytime soon.

True, you just have to see what engines USAF is using on their transport and tanker planes to realize this is not just "Russian backwardness" but completely normal way of doing things. Mature, reliable affordable engines are important to the services.

But with jet engines there is a real need for debugging via use.   Like with Winblows and the unannounced MS beta program which
involves the commercial sale of its OS  So we have a chicken and egg problem of deploying the new engines and taking the
risk to make them less risky.   Although, I do not expect terminal failures with the PD-14.   Russia has an established jet engine
development and production capability.

The PD14 should hopefully guarantee a good reliability when in service, but it is silly to push for their use in military projects where a good alternative exists.
The PS90 will still be produced and used on military products for several years.

Furthermore they basically just started serial production of the il76 with PS90 engines. It does not make any sense to change the engines again.
Maybe around 2028 or around that date... but at that point maybe they could be thinking about replacing the il76.
