The rebels have over 40,000 for sure.   They were already around 35,000 in August of 2014.

Given the condition of the Kiev regime forces, I would not expect any success from them.   I can't see NATO advisers and
equipment transforming the regime forces into an effective army.   At best they may not experience the sort of ass kicking they
got before Minsk I and Minsk II.   At best.

I remember reading that Donetsk wanted about 100,000 men but ended up somewhere around 80K. Hopefully someone can confirm this for me. Add in Lugansk forces, which should be how much?

Nah, the training only happened for 6 months, not even, and only train small amounts at a time. Rest are probably scared and incapable. Or Mercenaries.

It might not be that many, they might be quoting the US paratroopers as been worth 100x normal Ukrainian soldiers Wink

AFAIK this is shot range air defence system, nothing that could be useful against the rebels (no air force) and absolutely useless against RU air force. They might shoot down some drones with this thing but little more than that.

This is given to UKR to make  them feel apreciatted while they are being flushed down the toilet. Remember Saxons that UKR received? This is even less useful than those rust buckets, but they look cool so UAF does not look like complete joke.

Ukraine will not be receiving anything useful or fancy because USA &  UK do not want to see Georgian PR fiasco repeat itself (captured gear paraded on YouTube)

Also, comment about ''Russian airspace defense systems'' sound like something published for local consumption. It also makes zero sense from technical standpoint. Pep talk for canon fodder. Twisted Evil
I still think Russia should respond in kind and give a thank you gift in the form of Iglas, Russia should also get the IRA to deliver this gift.

In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure that the Ukrops can find some high bidders for people who can't get these systems openly and legally, so kudos to the UK and its government for helping Ukraine with its financial burden and for giving anybody a chance to down all sorts of aircraft.

Or someone could be trying to increase tensions between LPR and DPR to weaken co-operation against Kiev's next attack.

Maybe, but its just very coincidental that all this fishy stuff seems to be going on under plotnisky. After batman i was suspicious, and now that lightning has struck twice, well... I think its more than likely at the very least, that there is a mole in the lnr leadership somewhere.

I sincerely hope they can clean this mess up, because at the minute the lnr looks a little bit like kiev in the way its behaving.

We can’t help but revisit a recent interview he gave:

OD: What would be for you a victory in this civil war?

AM: In this war there will be no victory.

    OD: When will it end?

AM: It will end when the majority of the people will understand that they are being exploited for the benefit of others. On both sides. Nothing new. War has always been, and always will be, a business. The greatest victory will be if we create a government that thinks of the people. Not victory in the war, but victory over ourselves, over our own minds.

OD: Are the people already realising that something is amiss?

AM: That something is not right, yes. Not as much as we would wish. But sooner or later the two opposing sides will find a common language, and only then will they talk a little bit differently with each other. Only then can we create something that is truly popular. So long as people are distracted with “suicide”, we can build nothing here. Those who were conducting black affairs behind our backs will continue to do so. Continue reading.

Mozgovoy - a hero among heroes. Went from a civilian to a distinguished military commander in a year, almost single handely created a functioning infantry brigade with minimal help from outside.

Sadly, he was too independent and he had to go.

Mozgovoi was an idealist, he truly believed he could help building a Republic for the People, not for the bandits or the oligarchs.
Also he was a great real life example of what is a true Ukrainian: not a modern barbaric svidomite that we can see marching under a Red-black flag, but a
an honest person, that cared for the people - soldiers and civilians - under his command.

    RIP, Aleksey! Sad

    ---
I believe that even if it was the UA soldiers who killed him, LNR's and Russia's top politicals had some part of it also - passed the info about the route of his escort etc. I absolutely wouldn't be surprised if it was Russian hitmen who did this, as they've done it with Bednov.
I will take my words back if in the nearest future some high-rank radical Ukrainian general/politician bites the dust. But somehow I feel it is Givi, Motorola and Dremov who will be killed next.

To be honest, looking 1 year back, and remembering how and for what purpose it all started (to not let people who think it's OK to oppress anyone because of their political beliefs come to Donbass and terrorize its population), the mission was a failure: Donbass isn't free, it lies in ruins, people fled, economy is destroyed, there are no pensions, food or medicine for its population, the bandits are free to go on with their dark deals (if they pay to top political brass).
I'm really happy this isn't the fate for Crimean population (and hopefully it will never be), but Putin is a hypocrite - do you remember what his main line in "Crimea, way back home" documentary was - "we couldn't stand by side and look how basically our people be oppressed". Well, that's exactly what you are doing just right now, buddy. Yes, I know Russia is helping with specialists, weapons and ammunition. But in the same time, they give only such amount that Novorussia could hold the line, not by a gram more. Russia (or should I say its elite) isn't interested in Novorussia's success. They want to have a leverage on Ukraine by keeping this conflict as long as it is possible, and that is all. And this is a true tragedy for all the civilians in Donbass and for all the real idealistic volunteers who went there to help them defend the country.

Donetsk claims to have to have 23,000 regulars and 30,000 reservist. The total NAF with Lugansk included is 70-75,000 so Lugansk should have 17-22,000 regulars and reservist.
"According to our intelligence, the Ukrainians have already 36 battalion tactical groups, 20 separate infantry battalions, two battalions of special purpose and 3 reconnaissance battalions."
In January Cassad estimated the Ukrainian forces at 24 Army BTG's, 16 Army infantry battalions and 2 SF battalions. There were another 23 National Guard or independent volunteer battalions of which 4-6 would be BTG's and 1 was SF. The totals are probably the same but this force is more condensed and mobile for offensive actions.

    NOTE
    - an infantry battalion would probably have a battery of 6 MT-12's or D-30's artillery in support for a total of 500-600 personnel. Mainly defensive.
    - a battalion tactical group would include an infantry battalion with a company of tanks (10), a battery of 6 MRL's and a battery (6) or battalion (18) of SP or heavy artillery in support. Equipped with APC's or IFV's, these are the mobile offensive attack forces. This force would be from 750-900 personnel.

A raccoon made a comment about assasination of Mozgovoi that paraphrases the famous words of Martin Niemoller. Author of the Russian version is Ирма Нихтферштейн - Irma Nikhtfershtein. I edited it slightly so it reads better in English. I cannot agree 100%, but it does make a point.

"When asked about Strelkov, Bezler and Kozitsin I did not say anything, I did not object, I simply said nothing. When Batman was killed I did not say anything because I did not want discord. When they came for [threatened] Dremov I said nothing because I was afraid. And when they came for me, there was no one left to stand up for me ... "

The murder of Mozogovoy made me really sad. As I have lost a dear friend even though I never met him.
The sad part is that it's a miracle only by God that people like him were born and fought for these ideals in these modern fcked up world and society we are living in. A true idealist, a real russian and slav, orthodox christian that cared for soldiers on both sides and civilians, adored by civilians and soldiers alike, a commander yet a common civilian.
A modern day hero against this modern way of society, God bless you Alexey with the kingdom of heaven. cry

People, please do not underestimate putsch forces. They are trained and armed by the US. Remember how Assad underestimated Syrian rebels earlier this year when they were trained and armed by the US? Then boom Syrian rebels took over Idlib. I believe putsch forces would launch a massive sudden offensive like how Syrian rebels did in Idlib. NAF must be on full alert and full readiness at all times.

I seriously hope not, the damage to Donbass infrastructure has gone on for way too long. I was hoping the putsch in Kiev would have collapsed by now, but it seems the west is hell bent on supporting their fighting even though charades like Minsk 2 seem to suggest otherwise.
The longer this goes on, the worse it is for everybody. NAF must make the kill, take Kiev, arrest Poroshenko, restore democracy to Ukraine. Only then would this nightmare finally end.

I am honestly amazed that people still buy this "fight for Ukrainian democracy" BS. If you haven't noticed, Ukraine is democratic country by all standards that are being accepted today. US and EU, two most democratic entities on the planet, say so hence Ukraine is democracy.

This has nothing to do with democracy, this is about survival of those who refuse to be third grade citizens, lower caste and slaves.

Some people here suggest that Donbass should give up and rejoin Ukraine because "east is being destroyed". What are those people smoking? Do they think that Right Sector, Azov, Porky and other assorted scum will just kiss and make up with them?
No, they will subjugate and exterminate them with tacit and overwhelming approval of entire Ukrainian population which includes those "poor oppressed democracy-loving Russians in Ukraine" who "just want to work and be left alone". These willing slaves deserve everything they get starting with poverty and misery that they feel now due to collapsing economy and that is just the start.

Everyone keeps forgetting that for 70 years now odds have been stacked in favor of West Ukraine, the very same Nazis that are responsible for unspeakable atrocities and their direct successors. Instead of being reduced  to agrarian sh*thole entire Ukraine has been treated with velvet gloves in order to appease that scum. This is what you get when you fail to enact justice. This entire chaos is result of 70 year old issues being swept under a rug and desire of spineless slaves to remain slaves.

Good for them but there are some of those who refuse to be slaves and they will do what they can not to end up as slaves. So fu*k the infrastructure of Donbass, let the whole thing burn. You can build it again, but once you chose to be a slave you will always be a slave.

And I would like to reiterate once again that Russia is under no obligation to do anything to help rebels. Russia's only obligation is safety and wellbeing of it's citizens. They however do provide very generous help to Novorossia at no small cost to themselves and deserve nothing but gratitude.

Choice is simple for East Ukraine: slavery or struggle for freedom. Most opted for slavery, may they enjoy it in poor health(and they will, as all slaves do).

Tiny minority opted for struggle for freedom. I wish them best of luck in long and bloody battles ahead. And make no mistake, struggle for freedom, real freedom, is never short and bloodless.

This is very true, NAF has to be ready for anything.

RIP Aleksei Mozgovoi. Very sad, just heartbroken.

If that were the case, Putin would have stayed out of Crimea and abandoned it to Maidan. What makes Donbas different from Crimea? Donbas is even more pro Russia than Crimea. How many died in Crimea? How many died in Donbas? The answer is very clear. In fact, the people of Donbas asked to join Russia and Putin turned them down, the people of Donbas asked for Russian peacekeepers to stop the genocide and Putin turned them down.

I am sure members from Russia will clue you in, I would just like to remind you that Putin=/=Russia. When you talk about Russian foreign policy call it Russian foreign policy because Putin is not name of a country.
