Lugansk inferno. Trapped
The goal of this article is to give the depiction of the events of
July-August 2014, the most enduring and devastating days of
the defense of Lugansk when the soil was burning under our feet, when the smell of gunpowder and smoke was omnipresent, the days when hundreds of people were killed and when we made the last stand. The defense of Lugansk will be written in history of this war, as one of the most terrible and violent episodes.
Frankly, republics' territories of that period were the places of horror.
After the fall of
Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration in early July, VSU (Ua Armed Forces) launched the offence on all fronts. Their superiority in numbers and firepower seemed unmatched and the scale of lost territories was crushing. I would not like to talk about everything that happened in those days throughout, this story tells only a few episodes of the conflict.
That summer
Lugansk along with his older brother
Donetsk experienced the most enduring days in their history. By mid-July 30-40% of the population had already left their homes, and that was just the beginning because in August cities lost up to 70% of their inhabitants. The first shellings of Donetsk had occurred before Strelkov returned from
Slavyansk, but reached their climax just with the fall of the front in the suburbs of Donetsk. Lugansk was the second to suffer from arty attacks, since the second decade of July.
Ukrainian army had failed to take the border and after two weeks
southern borderlands became a cauldron for Ukrainian troops positioned south of LPR and southeast of DPR. By July 22-25 Ukrainian General HQ realized that as well though the cauldron was formed some time later. Militia's stubborn resistance, serious artillery fire (the great share of limited artillery units possessed by militia was transferred to the sector
Izvarino-Krasnodon-Rovenki), the fail to enter the
southern agglomeration of Donbas cities along the route
Rostov-Kharkov, remoteness from the main supply routes and the heavy losses made it extremely complicated for Ukrainians to hold border block posts and secured their defeat in the cauldron. Nevertheless the enemy managed to divert the big bulk of militia forces and for some time was greatly hindering connection with
Russia.
During the battle for
Izvarino it was almost impossible to cross the border. Sometimes shells fell even on the Russian soil and one citizen was killed in
Kuybyshevo. By the end of July the defection of Ukrainian soldiers from cauldron became so massive that according to some sources a thousand of servicemen managed to escape death in the cauldron by retreating to Russia. Despite the heavy resistance organized in the bottleneck of the cauldron, the trap was closed by the beggining of August and 5 thousand of enemy soldiers were doomed.
Southern Kettle
Trapped in the
steppes of Lugansk and left without appropriate supply of food Ukrainian forces were destroyed by decisive actions of the militia. Therefore that sector became a place of defeat for 79th, 72nd, 24th brigade and other units. A along with simultaneous disaster in
Shakhtarsk, the first days of August were marked by the first serious defeat of Ukrainian forces and their so-called "offence" on Lugansk and Donetsk.
The situation on the
Northern Front was not so pleasant for us. After militia left
Rubezhnoe,
Severodonetsk and
Lisichansk, the small town
Pervomaisk and its vicinities took the full blow from Ukrainian
Starobelsk-Kremink battlegroup and we are still holding it.
Pervomaisk endured several frontal assaults and one of its part was captured and re-captured several times. Today it is held by the militia. Unfortunately enemy's reinforcement arrived just in time from
Artyomovsk and pushed us out from
Popasnaya and after the fall of
Debaltsevo the future of
Stakhanov-Alchevsk agglomeration seemed grim.
By the second decade of August the enemy realized that it will be too difficult to take
Pervomaysk and assault
Stakhanov and
Alchevsk from the front, because the majority of Ukrainian assaults were successfully repelled by the militia thanks to the specific terrain of that sector and the most courageous actions of "
Prizrak" batallion under the command of
A. Mozgovoy plus other units though that cannot be said about some cowardly cossack units .
Despite our heavy resistance and attempts to counter-attack after the fall of
Schastye and
Stukalova Balka the front line came 4-5km close to Lugansk. Artillery shellings rose to an unprecedented scale, conducted mostly by mortars rather than artillery. Since the early August Lugansk was infiltrated by a dozen of subversive-reconnaissance groups (DRG) who mercilessly shelled the city from inside taking advantage of the absence of civilians, power shortages and to say the truth - of confusion as well.
Specific features of the terrain of
Zymogorye-Metalist sector gave Ukrainians the opportunity to observe
Lugansk in plain sight from the previously captured territories north of the town. By early August Ukrainians captured
Sabovka, Zymogorye, Beloye, Vesyolaya, Tarasovka and tried to implement an ambitious plan to build a corridor
Lugansk airport and encircle Lugansk.
Metalist changed its owners several times, Ukrainian artillery stationed there was utterly shelling militia positions in
Bolshaya Vergunka and
Malaya Vergunka. Vicinities of
Georgievka were captured July 28-29 and the forces of so-called "Counter-Terrorist Operation" approached Lugansk from the north and the west.
By the 10th of August the daily casualty rate of Ukrainian forces rose to 30-50 of wounded and killed servicemen,
30th brigade was the most determined to enter Lugansk via frontal assault. 11th of August was marked by literally endless attacks on Lugansk suburb - Alexandrovsk. That little town was captured and re-captured several times in the row but ultimately militia managed to repel Ukrainian attempts to enter Kamenobrodsky district of Lugansk, on August 13 and 14 a dozen of Ukrainian tanks and mortar batteries were destroyed there.
Fighting for
Vergunskii crossroad continued and despite victories claims from Ukrainian National Security Council, so-called "CTO" forces did not take control over Bolshaya Vergunka. They only controlled the forest in Vergunka only on August 14 but retreated later after mortar shelling conducted by LPR soldiers. By the 12 of August
Vergunskii crossroad was completely controlled by the junta and that gave them pleasure to announce that VSU managed to break in Lugansk.
August 16 was marked by notable artillery duels in
Sabovka-Metallist sector. During the fighting enemy lost up to three 2S9, 2S3 and two 2S1 arty pieces.
Absolutely incompetent junta forces deliberately targeted the residential areas and the places where food supplies were supposed to be stored, e.g. central market was shelled 7 times. Shelling continued on August 15 and 16 as well, supermarket "Epicenter" caught fire, it was impossible to find not only an open shop but even a moving car. The situation with bread supply was catastrophic, 80% of the city was left without water, hospitals had almost not generators and humanitarian aid from Russia simply could not be safely delivered. We were waiting for the relief for 6 long, very long days...
Lugansk lost electricity supply on August 2 and few days later lost water supply as well for a very long period. Similar problems were experienced in Donetsk and other cities Novorossiya. August 14 Ukies launched an another assault from two directions -
Lutugino-Alexandrovsk-Yubileynoe and
Georgievka-Novosvetlovka-Khrashevatoye
A simple splinter of a glass was seen as a bad omen those days. Soon Bolotov was removed and Ukies threw dozens of tanks into the breach ... terrible battles were fought in
Vergunka ... a column of tanks broke through
Aleksandrovka and was destroyed by militia on the road between
Aleksandrovka and
Yubileynoe, another column headed to
Beloye then entered the
airport through
Georgievka. These critters rushed to
Khryashevatoye and
Novosvetlovka later in order to stop the very first humanitarian convoy.
Barely 80-100 thousand people remained in Lugansk those days. That was a terrifying number considering pre-war population of 500k. Donetsk had a little less than 400k at that time, although those figures are uncertain. It was possible to do the headcount basing only on the number of distributed h-aid packages. The first h-aid convoy was an exceptional measure for the beleaguered Lugansk.
On the same day VSU launched an assault aimed to split
Stakhanovo-Alchevsk agglomeration, they came close to village
Utkino and captured
Malonikolaevka and
Shterovka therefore every militia unit in
Alchevsk that was able to help
Lugansk now was now forced to break through the semi-kettle on their own. Just a few days and VSU units would've managed to repeat "Encounter at the Elbe" thus breaking the resistance into small pockets with militia soldiers entrenched in big cities
Stakhanov,
Alchevsk, Lugansk and open for the siege and shelling (VSU wasn't able to conduct proper city assaults), just like in
Slavyansk. Luckily this never happened, but the enemy still managed to cut the last road on the route from
Krasnodon to
Lugansk, which was supposed to be used to deliver humanitarian aid from our brothers from
Russia. Ukrainian tank companies rushed 15 km forward and managed to reach outskirts of these crucially important for the defense cities despite being targeted by our artillery. For the time being
Komissarovka and Novoannovka were left under their control.
After the breakthrough succeeded the enemy reached
Novosvetlovka and Khryashevatoe. The major role in that operation was played by
1st Independent Tank Brigade with up to 40 tanks and 70 IFVs\APCs - force of an abundant size for a such small area. VSU established a decent armored reserve in the vicinities of
Lutugino and its coordinated raid catch LPR's command off guard. But it seemed that VSU's commanders didn't understand that such huge armored group is not supposed to move by the roads and field and as the result they suffered first losses near
Georgievka and Roskoshnoye, 4-5 km from Lugansk. The fighting for
Roskoshnoye was severe and bloody so after VSU failed to achieve established goals they made a tactical retreat and then suddenly rushed 2 kms to capture
Novosvetlovka and Khryashevatoe.
Wrecked UA T-64
Just as they failed to capture
Roskoshnoye on the move, they struggled to enter these villages similarly.
Novosvetlovka fell the first,
Khryashevatoe showed the greater resistance. August 15-17 weakened VSU reinforcement (they lost up to 7 tanks before arrival) tried change the balance but ultimately stuck in the close quarter fighting in
Khryashevatoe. Pressed with VSU's superiority in firepower and numbers militia began to retreat to the center of the village closing to Lugansk's residential area. Casualties spiked to dozens of killed and wounded for both sides per day, militia lost up to 20 soldiers killed during the fighting for nearby high point.
Failed to capture
Khryashevatoe in the quick street engagement some VSU units chose to
bypass the village and entered Lugansk vicinities from the south. There they met militia and entered in medium scale fighting because neither them nor militia had enough reserves to fully control this area. Ultimately VSU has established positions in aforementioned villages, photos of their burnt tanks taken in the village center leave little doubt of that fact.
Wrecked UA T-64 in Novsvetlovka
Rejoiced with the "victory" or due to confusion VSU launched an artillery strike on Lugansk vicinities where militiamen were supposed to hold at the evening of August 18 using all available equipment including MLRS Grad, Smerch and incendiary shells. This is the testament of Lugansk dweller who witnessed the shelling from
Artyomovsk district while being shelled from VSU positions in
Lugansk airport and Novosvetlovka.
"Ukies were shelling Khryashevatoe with white phosphorus incendiaries. The rain of fire pouring from the sky at the evening seemed like an infernal salute. Naturally I wasn't in the village at that time but it was clear for me that I'd not see anything good in there".
At the same time VSU tried to completely surround Lugansk by taking village
Nikolaevka west of Lugansk. Fortunately they did not succeed and were driven back quickly, though in principle the value of that village was negligible, the city had been already besieged. The situation in
Yubileynoye and
Alexandrovsk remained a stalemate, and none of the peers to move forward, though considering the exhaustion and depletion of munitions it was difficult for the militia to repel enemy. The front line was extremely unstable, clashes were occurring even in the vicinities of
Stanitsa Luganskaya that was actually behind VSU positions near
Metalist.
Yubileynoye was being shelled just as any other city near
Lugansk. Despite breath-taking reports from Ukrainian MSM, VSU managed to establish the real control over
Novosvetlovka and Khryashevatoe much later than it was reported by journalists.
Yubileynoe
Shelling continued. One day more than 150 mortar hits were registered in
Kambrod district. City center was shelled mostly with artillery. After August 4 city spent all its gasoline and the remaining scare fuel resources were used only by emergency services though firemen often did not arrive to fight the fire because some blocks were being shelled for hours. In these two days Lugansk lost a dozen of civilias killed and several dozens wounded. Fear held Lugansk in the tight grip, water supply was available only at the early morning and only on the lower floors of the buildings. Militia continued to defend "the road of life" for h-aid convoy in the fierce clashes with VSU and despite the arrival of all available reserves VSU failed to reach the full control by August 19.
At August 19
Novosvetlovka was shelled with Smerch MRLS by the third time. These days the true data was scare and partial, it wasn't possible to find out which particular village was captured by VSU and which was not.
Lugansk seemed deserted just as Donetsk those days. It was possible to leave the city by
the route Krasnodon-Lugansk but only under the huge threat and one refugee column was shelled by Ukrainian tanks. Luckily the majority of the population abandoned Lugansk before the blockade.
Front line by August 17
It should be mentioned that the majority of VSU collaborators who served as spotters, observers and saboteurs were the local dwellers. During the second decade of August militia destroyed up to dozen of sabotage-reconnaissance groups (DRG), 60 men in total. Many guiding beacons were spotted on theaters, museums and residential apartments. At August 19 militia resumed the fighting in
Stanitsa Luganskaya after VSU retreated from Versgunskii crossroad and managed to reclaim some territories and take trophies. In general the trend was positive for LPR.
During August 20 VSU was shelling
Lugansk outskirts. Enemy put the big effort on holding villages
Chelyuskinets,
Khryashevatoe and Novosvetlovka. The most fierce clashes were waged near
Georgievka. LPR anti-air teams managed to bring down Su-24 and Mi-24 and damaged another helicopter. It seemed that there was a hope to break the blockade - militia managed to partially recapture
Novoannovka and part of
Lugansk-Krasnodon route near
Lysoye,
Lobachevo,
Ilevka. Lugansk and militia positions were shelled with 2S5 Giacint from
Lutugino, later 6 of these SPGs were captured by militia.
By August 21 militia established a positive trend and partially unlocked the
relief route. The villages were still controlled by Ukies but reinforcements managed to enter
Lugansk using roundabout country roads and maskirovka techniques. Up to 70 heavy armored vehicles broke in Lugansk inspiring fear in the enemy heart. The corridor was build and several hours later another group joined militia. These additional troops gave enough strength to turn the tide in
Khryashevatoe and
Novosvetlovka and
north of Lugansk. It's not certain how they managed to reach the city, probably they detoured the main road following the stream of
Seversky Donets river and then turned to
Lugansk. Ukrainian assault from the south was repelled in
Kruglik district and assault from
Novosvetlovka was repelled in
Novoivanvoka.
According to militia at least 6 tanks and one BMP were destroyed at August 21 near Khryashevatoe, 400 of NatiGuard filth tried to assist punishers from Dnepr battalion and failed miserably.
We started to understand the scale of the advancement of Ukrainian
Alchevsk army group by the end of August 21 after militia launched an assault and took some small settlements near
Lutugino which was fortified by VSU. By August 22
Khryashevatoe was totally ravaged and after long and stubborn fighting VSU retreated 500 meter back from the village however some of them returned in order to provoke militia to shell residential areas. Fightig in
Novosvetlovka brought no results and by the next morning enemy lost up to 20 soldiers killed. The whole
airport was covered in smoke as NAF began to encircle it along with
Lutugino.
At 17:00 August 22 long hoped-for h-aid column from
Russian Federation arrived in Lugansk, I (the author) still don't know how they made it. Probably that was the reason why
NAF (Novorussia Armed Forces) spent all previous night suppressing Ukrainian artillery leaving the enemy shocked and afraid of Russian wrath or due to specific agreements made in the highest echelons of power. Those days Lugansk was connected with the rest of the world with a tread ten meters wide used by ha-aid convoy. Presence of Russia's armed force 7-8 km from Lugansk assured the safe arrival. Nevertheless fighting for
Khryashevatoe,
Novosvetlovka,
Metalist and
Vergunski crossroad continued even at August 22.
The thin road of life
After August 23 and 24 general attention was diverted to DPR's counter attack in
Illovaisk in the south but there was no possibility to launch the same operation in LPR. Militia managed to take just a small part of
Novosvetlovka only by the end of August 24. Fighting bogged down with only Ukrainian tanks burning on the roads to
Lugansk. Finally VSU realized the scale and the burden of tank and artillery losses that it suffered during previous 10 days. August 24 militia launch a sudden assault on
Stukanova Balka behind the enemy lines. After the sudden strike the city was all covered in smoke and confusion. Prizrak brigade launched an artillery strike and managed to destroy 1 T-64, 2 BMP-2, BRDM, two gaz tucks and 60 enemy soldiers. NAF artillery continued to increase its power.
By August 25
Vergunski crossroad practically fell under militia control.
Metalist was liberated August 26 but the last critters of Aidar NatiGuard battalion and the VSU remnants were hunted down only in September.
There was still a long road till victory but the turning point had been already reached, Lugansk realized that it was left to die. It was a 24th day spent without electricity, h-aid power generators brought with were supplying only hospitals and emergency services. Fighting reduced to sluggish arty-duels and local clashes near
Stanitsa Luganskaya.
H-aid convoy route
Afraid of infiltrators (DRG) LPR officials banned the traffic of civil transport but DRG still continued their operations. Junta's artillery positions in
Metalist started to experience shortages of ammunition but it didn't stop them from firing remaining shells at Lugansk. Militia started counter offensive August 25-26 and consequently managed to reclaim
Malonikolaevka,
Shterovka and some other villages of
Alchevsk agglomeration.
During the night btw August 26 and August 27 VSU lost 5 tanks, 7 ACVs, 5 MRLS Grad, two ammunition stocks and 5 cars. Fighting shifted to Rodakovo and the main center of Junta resistance -
Lutugino. Besides Ukies continued to fight in
Novosvetlovka,
Slavyanoserbsk and
Lugansk airport.
Alexandrovsk and
Yubileynoe remained under their partial control.
In
Rodakovo militia destroyed 1 T-72B, 2 T-64 and 60 enemy soldiers with rocket and artillery fire + 2 BMP-2 and 1 ZIL-131 in
Vergulyovka + 2 BMP-2 and 54 enemy soldiers in
Petrovskoe + 10 enemy soldiers in
Utkino + pushed VSU from
Roskoshnoe after a stubborn battle.
Ultimately VSU ceased offensive operations in LPR and focused on the defense of recently captured settlements and tried to hinder militia's onslaught by constant attacks from
Georgievka and Lugansk airport.
Novosvetlovka and
Khryashevatoe were liberated only August 29.
Lugansk was shelled by MRLS Uragan and SPG Giacint August 28, dozens of houses and a school were damaged. Thanks to militia the intensity of mortar strikes was decreased and with VSU being pushed away by 600 meters per day Lugansk was returning to normal life. Water and electricity supply was almost restored, community services resumed their work, 80 000 of food packages were distributed among civilians, a public kitchen was opened.
August 30 milita launched a serious assault at VSU positions though their advancement met heavy resistance, e.g. they took
Rodakovo August 26 but were pushed out the following day. It was captured only in September. Later militiamen found out that Ukies put dozens of mines in
Novosvetlovka, lost up two three companies of soldiers and conducted horrific amount of atrocities, Aidar battalion proved to be the most notorious. Casualties suffered by militia were heavy as well but
Zarya battalion (Dawn) was distinguished in that operation.
Occupied Novosvetlovka
During the battle itself the enemy lost up to 30 armored vehicles, mostly tanks. Combing with the losses in
Georgievka and
Khryashevatoe VSU lost up to 30 tanks, 40 ACVs, a doze of SPGs. After that militia has conducted the sweeping recapture of settlement in Lugansk vicinities taking
Georgievka,
Metalist ending up encircling VSU in
Lutugino kettle after the swift cut of supply lines at August 28-31. Enemy lost a record quantity of artillery pieces in that kettle - up to three 2S5 batteries, one 2C19, more than a dozen of 2S1 and 2S3 with 40% of them captured as trophies.
It's hard to calculate the loss of their manpower, most estimation call 2000 of killed and the same quantity of wounded, 80th and 30th brigades suffered the most casualties and 1st Independent tank brigade lost almost all of its tanks. Only three months later they became a battle ready unit again, but before that they were considered wiped out. Blockade of
Lugansk was breached but LPR continued to experience severe connection problems three following weeks.
Ukies continued to shell
Lugansk for a long time,
Vergunka is still being targeted. Front line went by the flow of
Severskii Donets river,
Stanitsa Luganskaya was abandoned but every village 15 km from Lugansk was captured assuring safety of Lugansk dwellers, safety that was denied to the dwellers of
Donetsk,
Gorlovka,
Pervomaisk and other cities where clashes happen 1 km from them. Lugansk airport was abandoned by VSU September 1, remaining units were hunted down September 2 in terminal basement which is beyond repair.
Church where Ukies held hostages
On October 16, Lugansk had a rally-requiem at which the city commemorated its dead citizens and the defenders of the Lugansk People's Republic and all civilians who fell victims of the junta regime that occupied Ukraine.
According to the official but very incomplete data, from June to September 465 people were killed in bombings and fighting in
Lugansk. If we take into account civilian casualties in
Pervomaisk,
Popasnaya,
Lisichansk,
Severodonetsk,
Schastye,
Stanitsa Luganskaya,
Kondrashovka,
Novosvetlovka,
Khryashevatoe,
Lutugino and other towns and villages, the total number of civilians killed by the junta invaders may reach several thousand. Women, men, elderly, children ... the bitter price paid for the independence of Lugansk. Over time it is planned to build a monument in honor of the dead.
