Breaking the siege on Kweires airbase is a very significant victory.thumbsup

Kuweires this might become the staging ground for an eastern, northern and western offensive. It remains to be seen how soon the attack choppers start getting based in the airbase and support the advancing units.

    http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/cheetah-forces-lift-the-three-year-long-siege-of-the-kuweires-military-airbase/

Cheetah Forces Lift the Three Year Long Siege of the Kuweires Military Airbase

According to a military source from the Syrian Arab Army, the total number of casualties for the Syrian Armed Forces from this Kuweires Military Airport offensive was 57 soldiers, with another 200+ wounded-in-action (WIA) – ISIS’ casualties could not be verified, but it is likely much higher than the Syrian Armed Forces’ death toll.

Its good to see the SAA advancing along the lake in parallel. We might in coming week see a much wider area along the lake with SAA and probably a spearhead arising from this line to Raqqaa before year-end.

A group of soldiers penetrated IS lines west of the airport and reached government troops inside the base, firing into the air in celebration.

According to military commentator Viktor Murakhovski (vim at Otvaga) a lot of gear is being brought over via the Syrian Express. He believes new units are being formed in the rear. In his estimate it will take a minimum of 45-60 days to get them ready before they can join the fight, although some of the equipment has already been spotted in some videos.

Ming Airbase or mingbath forgot the exact name.. it was reported by Lebanese
Military experts commentators that they Syrian Army hold it for 3 years.. under siege..
but in the end the terrorist finally captured it.. the question is.. how you consider such
even a failure or a major success for Syrian army.. losing a military base?

According to the lebaness expert with information close to the Syrian command..
the SAA lost ~20 soldiers defending the base.. and the Rebels lost 3,500. Smile
So who really was the winner and who really was the loser ? The Military base did not
helped the Rebels in any way since they dont have airforce and the SAA removed anything
of use for them... Stories like this is important to remember.. because this is exactly the kind
of battles that Syria needs to provoke to achieve more with less..

So if you ask me.. there was no Rush for Kuwaitires Military base to take it.. i will have just delayed it its capture for a week or two if big waves of terrorist continues assaulting it. Better to fight them out of their underground bunkers and attract them in numbers than to figure out where they are hidding in a city. because is far easier to fight on defense when you have heavily fortified your zone and dig trenches. than in offense that you need to deal with mines and terrorist can hide in residential zones ,negating the airforce advantage that you will have had the terrorist move to the Open field and exposed without any defense.

Soldiers hat entered the base counted 314 defenders. At the beginning there were about 500-600 of them so 200-300 must have died. OF course for a 35 months long siege this is a modest number - these 500 soldiers inficted much higher losses on the enemy (200 ISISmen were killed in a single assault in October) and kept a much more numerous force tied for almost 3 years.

Many of the injured, and possibly dead, had probably been medivaced out on the outgoing, and otherwise empty, supply helicopters so the death toll may not be quite that bad. Pretty heroic tho'.

They lost 35 this year alone. Let's not get all unicorns and buttercups. The ISIS attack that almost overran the base earlier in October killed 14 when they slammed two VBIED's, unfortunately that also collapsed the building they were targeting, which closed the gap/

And how many men did ISIS lose for every failed attack? The terrain around the base is perfect for the defender - flat terrain all around, everu soldier approaching the base becomes a sitting duck.

So where are now the bashing to the Rebels/US commandos for failing in 2 years to take control
of a surrounded military base? Isn't that incompetence? Why when the SSA lose a city ,there is major bashing of their failure.. but when they hold a place for 2 years after waves and waves
of thousands mercenaries attack they still hold it?

Now you are claiming it was an "almost win"..for the American paid and armed mercenaries..  lol1   And the Syrian Army should be the one blamed for not taking it earlier. Wink

About the casualties many of the SAA in the miltiary airport that were wounded earlier were evacuated.. so the casualties possibly are in the less than 100 .. while at the same time the American mercenaries have to be in the thousands ,since they all attack in massive waves after
several suicide bomb attacks in trucks, and such tactic are not cheap in mercenaries loses.

a US mechanized regiment would have taken the base in one day. Do not equate rebel militants to NATO soldiers, this is stupiditty like from earth to the moon. The fact that many militants take money from KSA and Turkey does not mean they fight exclusively for that money. Rolling Eyes

Nonetheless, how do you imagine the battle to have a different outcome? Like I said, ground around Kweires is perfect for defence. There is no way to break the line of deefence except by sending wave upon wave of guys on pick-ups - which is what IS did.

Although it will probably be increasingly safe to operate from there, especially the Mi-24s, the fly in the ointment would be logistics. Fuel and munitions etc would need to be brought from the coast, vulnerable trucks.

As you say, much better to have more minutes of flying time.
Looks like the Mi-24s are already being dispersed around the country. From yesterday's Russian MoD briefing

In the province of Daraa a training camp belonging to the group "Al-Nusra" was destroyed. In the southern province of Hasaka, a renewed joint operation of Syrian troops and Kurdish groups was announced in the Villages of Tal Serena and Rajm al-Sayyaran. US officials have said that Russia has expanded its area of application of combat helicopters to a large part of the territory of Syria. Now, according to their data, Russian Mi-24 and Mi-8 are not just taking off from an air base in the province of Latakia, but also from the other three air bases in central and northern Syria.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman at a regular press briefing, informed a significant change in the tactics of terrorist groups throughout the territory of Syria. As noted by Major-General Igor Konashenkov, "gangs are not as aggressive as they were a month ago. Today, terrorists are trying to conduct flexible defensive tactics, regularly moving and dodging punches as the Syrian government troops and the Russian airforce seek and destroy."
