The Syrian army just killed 5 of the top brass of al-Qaeda’s command in Syria. All fought in Afghanistan and all were considered as “moderate” Syrian rebels by the west..! More will be killed in the coming days.

LOL. Don't use Sputnik as a source. The advance is slow, because we didn't go on the offensive yet. Just some small advances here and there.

Nice and sunny weather conditions for this week in Afrin. Time for some more dead terrorists. Smile

But I do agree that with Russian tanks, armored vehicles and jets we would have better results. US materials are poor quality.

By the way, radio antennas captured ..

Most helicopters fly that low. Helicopters for the most part wont be able to avoid launches from manpads even if flying high. They have to rely more on countermeasures instead in a lot of cases.

That chopper is still way to low and close. It can seriously be damaged with dshk heavy machine gun. No need to risk the chopper for this. Only from high altitude maybe.

Its a very huge mistake that risked chopper and pilots' lives for no reason by flying in front of PKK column 3 times in low altitute like this.

I wish our pilots in that chopper will be sent to re-training so these kind of mistakes will not repeat ever again.

Its a brand new domestic T-129 ATAK-helicopter, worth millions, you will loose it and the two trained pilots wil die. I hope he gets punished for this.

Obviously heavy machine gun fire is a threat when flying this low. I dont know what situation this was, but using the autocannon against ground targets like this can be interpreted in a number of ways. Perhaps the situation called for a quick response on a target of opportunity, or perhaps the heli was out of ammo for other weapon systems, and had to get in close for an emergancy CAS run. As pointed out before, it actually make sense to fly as low as possible in areas where MANPAD's have proliferated. IR seeker manpads for example will have a harder time locking on to its target when there is more background noise like a warm landscape. Against a clear and cold sky, the seeker will more easely lock on to the target, while the operator has a longer timespan to achieve a positive lock. The big mistake made by the crew here is not deploying chaffs or whatever countermeasures this helicopter is equipped with.

Flying lower makes you vulnerable to all small arms fire including 12.7mm cal rifles and MGs or larger, but flying higher makes you vulnerable in a real war to medium range SAMs... which will really fuck you up.

Flying at that altitude is OK if you have DIRCMs that will dazzle incoming optically guided missiles like MANPADS... you are otherwise safe from unguided rockets like RPGs but can still see targets and engage them too.
