Back on topic, why wouldn't the VDV be used as it should, never has been since 1968 or maybe in chechnya once but not sure... As much as I want to see that, i know it's not a great idea because it will cause too many casualties. But it would be awesome.

I think the most useful and cost effective thing Russia can do while staying realistic is to build a shitload of cheap suicide drones and use them everywhere, in cooperation with sniper/recon teams. This will turn the tide in a matter of days or months, depending on the scales and areas.

The most urgent thing is to send in (and test) the whole panoply of army robots Russia created, there are some cheap ones that would do the job in city fightings. The URAN 9 must be tested too (with applique armor against standard RPG grenade - most common threat - and RPO/AGS-17 mounts instead of ATGMS, load the 30mm gun full HE and let's cleanse the area)

In light that Russia does not have attack drones , cheap low tech suicide drones in the many hundreds gets my vote. Im far from impressed with Russia mediocre performance in Syria .
With the airforce they have  there , i cant understand why they allowed 7,000 Terrorist to come in the open and open a defensive line of more than a year ,from the Syrian army so quick in just 3 days. You see terrorist uploading videos in youtube with their shitty smiles , showing their captured munition from Syrian army and not single sign of Russian airforce anywhere to ruin their day.. not even when it is well know the location where Syrian army store its munitions. All this failure in Aleppo have to be consequence of Russia bowing To US in not bombing their Alqaeda buddies . because i can't believe the Russian Airforce to be so so poor in dealing with a bunch of terrorist concentrated in a small zone. is unbelievable. It had to be

Don't kid yourself. Russia military is a paper tiger. It's claimed to be the second best military in the world. In reality, it's nowhere close. Look how the well Americans performed in Manbij despite no sea route for logistics. Look how bad Russians performed in Aleppo despite sea route for logistics. Russia military is nowhere close to America military. People used to think Syria military was tough because it was made to fight Israel. Syria war exposed the Syria militayr as a joke, unable to deal with a few thousand criminals armed with AKs and RPGs basically. Russia military might be able to beat little Georgia, but against a NATO invasion Russia military has 0 chance.

Russian Bombers Hit Major Daesh Arms Depots in Syria After Entering From Iran

Five major arms depots destroyed by Russia's Tu-22M3 and Su-34 were used to supply Daesh militants near Aleppo, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia's Ministry of Defense confirmed Tuesday that it had deployed Tu-22M3 bombers and Su-34 strike fighters in Iran and these have already carried out airstrikes against terrorists in Syria.

​"On August 16, 2016, Tu-23M3 long-range bombers and Su-34 bombers, having taken off from their base in Hamadan [Islamic Republic of Iran], carried out group airstrikes against targets belonging to Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist groups in the provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and Idlib," the ministry said in a statement.

Russian bombers also destroyed three militant command points and training camps in Syria's Serakab, Al-Bab, Aleppo and Deir Ez-Zor, killing "a significant number" of terrorists, according to the ministry.

"Weapons and ammunition depots, training camps and command points destroyed through airstrikes were used to supply militants active in the Aleppo region," the ministry said in a statement.

The Tu-22M3 is a long-range strategic bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The bombers previously carried out precision airstrikes against Daesh targets in Syria from Russian airspace.

The Su-34 fighter-bomber has been tested in the war against Islamist radicals in Syria where the aircraft arrived among the first Russian forces in 2015.

Daesh has been outlawed in Russia and numerous other countries around the world.

As much as I'd love to see the Chinese getting involved I think they're very much concerned with issues closer to home. The South China Sea is rapidly escalating. They also seem to have more of a focus in Central Africa/South Africa rather than the shithole (aside from a couple of sovereign states) that is the ME.

So are these the "unofficial" boots on the ground?  Spotters, special forces, etc?  Because I find it odd to just have these men embedded with incompetent troops because they end up getting killed for nothing.

I agree.  Russian combat robots should be used.  Would gain a lot of valuable information on testing.  Uran 9 would be great.
