They really need some reco pods. Even a simple camera with a zoom would be nice. The most advanced zoom in civilian market allow you to clearly zoom on the moon and see the details of it. Just see nikon coolpix p900.

Looking for targets with eyes from less than 1km height is stupid.

For fucks sakes, are you for real?

You are aware that the Su-25 is equipped with sights, no? You seriously think its all eye sight, really?

For most part sadly yes, its eyesight.

Yesterday I mistakenly wrote that Roman Filipov served in Crimea when it was Ukrainian, this info was spread by some accounts on Russian social networks, in reality he was transferred to the peninsula from Vladivostok in 2014.
    I apologize.

NOTE: By this he would have been with the Su-25SM squadron based at Gvardeiskyy with the 37th Aviation Regiment.

The one flown I believe is SM so it does have SOLT-25 which is TV, Thermal, etc. Unless they didn't send in upgraded ones and using old ones.

It becomes a headscracher though as to why they would give it a rather impressive replacement to KLEN to actual TV sight and what not, but not directly? Not like they are rather new or expensive compared to SOLT-25

It was quoted though that the Su-25SM flies higher than what this guy was flying. It's believed he didn't think manpads would be in a "safe zone" which if I am reading right, it was supposed to be part of a ceasefire zone?

Edit: the Su-25UBM uses a DIRCM system. While the Su-25SM doesn't....

Russia needs to use UCAV ASAP and stop risking pilots lives. Qaeda won't capture any pilots. Any pilots captured would only be executed.

These pilots are at real risk if one of the videos of this incident is anything to go by. This plane was not overflying, it had just discharged a load of rockets. Putting it bluntly, this would make the pilot a definite target for stringing up, no Geneva Convention here.

They trade everything between them in Syria. Maybe he could have survived if he has let them capture him. But it was his choice ... I'm against wars and Syria's situation is really tragic many dead for some stupid guys that find wars funny. RIP.

Brave way to go out. Seeing aftermath I guess Islamic cunts would have done their worst to him. They were basically rebranded ISIS to begin with.
I expect less SU-25 flying now and it's back to strikes from high altitudes by capable aircraft. Lack of modifications means one thing- Russia will get rid of 25s after they will reach their shelf life. Sad as it's really capable platform, but it's time for ducks to fly.

Should have had MAWS and flares. Russia should donate ex Russian Su-24 and Su-25 to SAA and transition to UCAV for the anti terrorism role. The US and China and Israel and Iran all have these.

Su-25SM3 is a thing, though and it seems to solve those issues. But it's not clear to me how many they are planning to order in total, by 2020 and 2025. Also, are they upgrading SMs to that standard or is their plan to operate both? 50/50 SMs and SM3s?

Pilot of Russian Su-25 Blew Himself Up After Being Encircled by Terrorists - MoD

Maj. Filippov will be posthumously conferred the Hero of Russia award, the Russian Defense Ministry Stated.

    https://sputniknews.com/world/201802051061363319-pilot-russia-su-25-blew-himself-up/

.....“Upon landing after having ejected in the vicinity of the village […] under the control of terrorists, Major Roman Filippov fought an unequal battle during the final minutes of his life using his standard issue weapons. After being surrounded by the terrorists, seriously wounded, the Russian officer blew himself up with a grenade when the distance to the militants diminished to just a few tens of meters.".....

His last stand and last words will be going down in history books and most likely collective memory as well.

Funny how these  jihadist apes always get more than they bargained for when encountering Russian Military even under, for them, most auspicious circumstances.

New type of #UXO in #Irbeen (#Damascus suburb being assaulted by Assad's forces) today: 9N517F, the detachable chute-retarded HE warhead of the rare 9M53F 122 mm rocket. This one was produced in 1988, likely supplied from Russia recently.

Apparently there are more hospitals in "rebel held areas" than residential buildings. The same two-bit violin music
about "hospitals" bombed in Aleppo being repeated for Idlib. How many cat sanctuaries are going to be destroyed

For Russia today is perfectly possible to abandon totally the CAS combat style.

The Russian Ministry of Defence has submitted a request to the Turkish side for assistance in getting back all fragments of the Su-25 jet that had been shot down by terrorist MANPAD over Idlib province, #SYRIA, on February 3 http://s.mil.ru/2E2YvOx
    https://twitter.com/mod_russia/status/960826471240683520

Russia asks Turkey to help recover debris of jet downed in Syria

The Russian military said Tuesday that it asked Turkey to help recover the debris of the Russian fighter jet that was shot down over embattled northwestern Syrian province of Idlib over the weekend.

Al-Qaida-linked militants on Saturday said they downed the Russian Su-25 in Idlib. Russian officials said the pilot engaged in a gunbattle with militants before blowing himself up with a hand grenade.

"The Russian military sent a request to the Turkish side to assist in obtaining all the wreckage of the Russian Su-25 fighter jet shot down by terrorists Feb. 3 with a MANPADS in the airspace over the Syrian province of Idlib," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added that it asked Turkey to help recover the debris in order to establish the type of weapons used to shoot down the jet.

Moscow also said Turkey helped to return the body of the pilot back to Russia.

What they should do is use UAV to locate targets and designate them with laser, and use Krasnopol to pinpoint bomb them from 20 km away behind front lines.

Not sure if you are aware how little is 20km in mobile combat as it is now.

Go and ask someone from recon units what he thinks about going to tag a target.
