Uzbekistan Warns U.S. That Afghan Pilots and Their Families Can’t Stay

An Afghan pilot’s U.S. relatives seek help, as U.S.-trained airmen are caught in a diplomatic tussle

WASHINGTON—Facing Taliban pressure, Uzbekistan has warned the U.S. that a group of highly trained Afghan pilots who fled there two weeks ago aboard Afghan Air Force helicopters and airplanes face expulsion from the country, officials say.

Uzbekistan is urging Washington to act quickly to take the pilots to a third country to avoid inflaming relations with the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan, these officials say. Uzbekistan has maintained relations with the group for years while carefully hedging between powers vying for influence in Afghanistan.
The U.S. effort to train and build an Afghan air force was among the most celebrated programs in support of the country’s military. The U.S. spent billions of dollars on the air force, including on training, maintenance and the supply of dozens of helicopters and planes.
The Afghan government and military collapsed earlier this month, and the Taliban has taken control of most of the country.

Some Afghan pilots flew themselves to safety with hundreds of family members and colleagues aboard 46 Afghan Air Force helicopters and planes. These pilots are among the Taliban’s most hated enemies because of their role in airstrikes that inflicted high numbers of casualties during the decades long conflict. The Taliban also have called on Uzbekistan to return the aircraft to Afghanistan.

    From The Hill

Uzbekistan warns US-trained Afghan pilots, families face expulsion

The issue of U.S.-trained Afghan pilots in Uzbekistan came under increased attention after Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas), who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and is a former U.S. Air Force pilot, asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken to get involved with the situation and help the pilots who are at risk of retaliation from the Taliban, the Journal reported.

The State Department responded to questions on the matter, saying, “We thank the Uzbek government for continuing to host Afghans in Uzbekistan while we pursue all avenues for their long-term safety and security,” according to the newspaper.

The State Department, however, has been slow in responding to the situation, the Journal reported, citing a foreign official, which has frustrated the Uzbek government.

The Taliban are now reportedly pressing officials at the Uzbekistan Embassy in Kabul to send the pilots back, a foreign official told the Journal, warning that their families in Afghanistan will be at risk if they are not sent back immediately.

This Panjshiri commander highlighted a few points, but here’s my favourite two:

    - We are ready for peace, but we are also prepared to fight
    - He warned the Talibans that you may enter Panjshir, but it will be impossible to make it back out

End of an era boys. What a wild ride.
Started off with me being 8 and barely knowing what was going on in the world, to being pro-EU/US and intervention to disillusionment and a more pro-Russian anti imperialist stance, on further to where I am now.
Kind of crazy to think about that this war was around for so much of my life.
Time to fire up some old soviet songs about the afghan war, seems like a good time for it.

    @ Cowboy's daughter

"...........Taliban killed 14 Hazaras in Khadir district of Daikundi province, ... in Kahur Dara Khodi village of Khadir district in Daikundi province........"

Recognise Taliban ? Recognise Taliban killings ? No absolutely not . Just condemn them . Any tribal killings must be condemned . That is why all the tribes must have ability to protect themselves . Otherwise ethnic genocide and mass exodus in region affecting security and stability .

    @  Seigsoloyov

"........No, that will not be happening......" . Reality on the ground is different from wishful thinking idealism . We can not unite world in our mind . But have to deal with consequences of divided world .

    @ GarreyB

".....Who should I compare?......."  I was thinking about same problem . It is important , since the situation affects all of us . We can not say their country , their problem . Russia suffering 3 0,000 dead because of Afghan ( Taliban ) heroin ? Iran suffering millions refugees because of Taliban tribal war ? Tajik suffering security threat already from Taliban ? So we see our car rolling into a slow motion crash , and we say not my problem ? But Russia already had military moves with Tajik along border . And Iran says border safe . It is funny how quickly the Taliban learn to fly complex Helicopter . And move them . Absolutely no Pakistan pilots ? Maybe they learn from video computer simulation ?

The world can buy some opium products from farmers in Afghanistan for medical use . But most must be destroyed . Farmers then given help to grow food crops . Taliban must cooperate in this . Or crops should be destroyed by external powers using natural or chemical means .

    http://www.cbn.nic.in/html/opiumcbn.htm#:~:text=Insect%20-%20pests%20The%20opium%20poppy%20is%20attacked,%28Head%20gall%20fly%2C%20Capsule%20weevil%20and%20Capsule%20borer%29.

Any Taliban learner pilot ( Pakistan pilot ) will come down quickly , if using aircraft to attack tribes ......LOL

British Intelligence is in touch with the Taliban  to establish a covert force and base in Afghanistan, involving the SAS, SBS, Delta Force and Seals, to fight Islamic State.

Taliban operated Black Hawk over the skies in Kabul. But maybe the pilots are Pakistanis

miketheterrible wrote:It is possible the partition of Afghanistan much like Somalia with Somaliland.
Not possible because Afghanistan does not recognize the Durand line that Pakistan wants it to accept. No Afghan government has ever accepted the Durand Line as the international border.

For senior Taliban, many raised in religious madrassas and with the experience of years of fighting and hardship, the change is overdue.

“Our culture has become toxic, we see Russian and American influence everywhere even in the food we eat, that is something people should realise and make necessary changes,” a Taliban commander said. “This will take time but it will happen.”

Across the country, the change has been noticeable.

I've always been pro-NATO intervention in Afghanistan. In as far as it seemed there were really willing to build up the country and its institutions, raise education and fight fundamentalism. That would be great for Afghanistan, but also the other countries around it. If anyone here thinks a 2nd Pakistan is in Russia's long-term interests, or of course India's - then you're very much mistaken.

In light of the last few months though we've all learned that this was all just a paper-thin facade that was brushed away in an 11-day offensive. The Afghan govt was supported by the urban population or at least a large segment of it, together with basically just a bunch of feudal warlords who grew filthy rich out of plundering part of that $1 trillion dollars that had been spent on the war. Them and the Afghan bureaucracy, the politicians and ministers, the Western contractors, and of course American politicians and the defense-industrial complex. I'm positive in fact most of that $1 trillion never left America; it was just money passed from one set of hands to another.
Well in the end the warlords saved their own butts and everyone else ditched their responsibilities and fled as well. It was never going to be a success story, not by doing things the way they did.
