Abramovich to sell Chelsea with net proceeds going to Ukraine war victims
What you need to know:
The billionaire believes it is in the "best interest" of the Champions League holders if he parts ways with the club he has transformed since he bought it in 2003
Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich said on Wednesday he had made the "incredibly difficult" decision to sell the Premier League club, pledging that proceeds would go to victims of the war in Ukraine.
The billionaire believes it is in the "best interest" of the Champions League holders if he parts ways with the club he has transformed since he bought it in 2003.
The dramatic development comes days after Abramovich said he was handing over control of Chelsea to trustees of its charitable foundation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"I have always taken decisions with the club's best interest at heart," Abramovich said in a statement.
"In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the club's sponsors and partners."
It is a seismic moment for English football after nearly two decades during which Abramovich's team have consistently challenged for the sport's top honours.
Chelsea have won 19 major trophies in the Abramovich era, including their first two Champions League crowns and five Premier League titles.
But the 55-year-old's reign will come to an end in the fall-out from Russia's invasion of its neighbour.
Abramovich, alleged to have close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin, has not been named on a growing British sanctions list targeting Russian banks, businesses and pro-Kremlin tycoons.
But the Chelsea owner's concern about potential seizing of assets is understood to have sparked his move to off-load the Blues.
Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and US investor Todd Boehly, a co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, are reported to be two of the parties now preparing a joint bid for the Premier League giants.
Wyss, 86, told Swiss newspaper Blick he had been offered the chance to buy the London club because Abramovich wanted "to get rid of Chelsea quickly" before potential political sanctions.
It is believed Abramovich's asking price for Chelsea will be around £3 billion ($4 billion), with American bank the Raine Group reported to have been asked to handle the sale.
- Privilege of a lifetime'
Chelsea's debt to Abramovich currently stands at around £1.5 billion but he will not ask for loans to be repaid, while he is also said to be set to sell his London property portfolio.
Abramovich, who made a rare appearance to watch Chelsea win the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi last month, has pledged to donate any net proceeds from the sale to help victims of the war in Ukraine.
"The sale of the club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process," he said.
"I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and club.
"Moreover, I have instructed my team to set up a charitable foundation where all net proceeds from the sale will be donated.
"The foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine. This includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery."
Abramovich paid £140 million to buy Chelsea and the shrewd appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager helped shatter Manchester United and Arsenal's stranglehold on the Premier League.

Russian Su-25 shot down, Donetsk area. I wonder what system could have been used, I doubt it's MANPADs, are they are trying to pull Serbs?

Would BUk damage it like that? It would definitely shred it with square holes. So they keep their AA off until the last moment?
Also, I doubt that Ukraine has fighter jets active, they did use Su-24 a day ago. Almost impossible to target it when it's flying low and has a cover. But where does it they take off from? I know they can easily take off from potato fields or motorways, but do they need infrastructure to service and rearm them? It's not a drone.

The nuclear power plant was defended by 2nd battalion of PPISF, Ukrainian National Guard. They stood no chance and I wonder why Ukraine decided to keep them there.

Interesting note from the Ukr General Staff report of 0600 this morning.
The Russian Air Force is attempting to supress Ukrainian air defences on the Black Sea coast.
Operations of Su-24Ms, using RBK-500 cluster bombs, escorted by Su-30SMs, is reported.

The church of the Moscow Patriarchate was robbed in Kiev. They brought out everything they could, including food and equipment. Nazi Mikita Zujko calls on his supporters to turn the looting of church property into a mass phenomenon.

They clearly need more drones. And kh-25P. Dumb bomb put the aircraft in danger.

This is a commander and his comms guy (don't know military term) who in the past would have had a radio back pack and a whip aerial and now has a tablet and a couple of mobile phone like devices.

Also mentioned how Serbs would destroy equipment rather than let it be used by enemy, and that he doesn't understand how army unit can leave equipment parked in line and organised manner and then walk away.
Also he was disappointed by use of VDV in light BMDs in cities and throwing of special recon units into objectives too deep into enemy territory instead of using them as agressive forward observers and spotters. Lack of infantry protection for armoured units is almost unexisting and they get so easily destroyed by RPGs, he says Its mistake Yugoslav army learned in Vukovar and was later repeated in huge part in Syria in early stages of the conflict.
On other side is Is surprised by performance of LNR-DNR and says it's the experience that counts.
This is 1999. Veteran, one of the best men Yugoslavian army had, he commanded multiple urban ops with back then Yugoslav special forces and PJP against UCK, he was also friend with late Anatoly Lebed.
He said what most people here in Serbia that participated in war see and feel frustrated including myself as loses are preventable in majority of cases.
I assume some here will probably know who he is.

Unprotected logi convoys.
Though maybe they are spreading themselves thin, hard to say we aren't in the field. The ukies do have more men then the russians atm.
We will have to see within a week what, happens.
Being pro-russian doesn't mean you overlook such mistakes and make excuses for it, so I respect the general for being logical.

Airforce compensate the number advantage of the ukrainians and their ambush tactics. Yet russians aren't using it. Air defences should have been 24/7 attacked by drones.

About 2010 or so, the Russians were developing comm systems to fix the issue that existed in Georgia in 2008 war. A lot of the comm systems that came out where standard digital radios and receivers to making smart phone like radio devices. Rostec is the developers.

At no point have either the Russian government or the military made any statements on how long the special operation in Ukraine will take. It could be days it could be years or anything in between. They have gone out of their way not to specify a time frame so you can safely ignore claims like "They thought it would end quickly" as trolling.

Desperate ? No. They are being realistic. Ukrainian fight with ambush tactics so they need constant drones surveillance around tgeir area as well as communication with artillery.

No I mean in way that they finally employed one of the 6 or 9 Orion's they have in attack role.
