Buk is a beast of a system. And Ukraines got a lot of em from ussr and later times.

Buk was I believe the main ad system that Georgia used to take down russian AC during Georgian war.

This is Russian sentiment, they want to see heavier approach on "fraternal people"

This is not a military decision, it's a political one

They brought a then super secret super stealth plane down with a 1960 era S-125 Pechora missile. Ukraine has the Buk M1 in service which is quite a bit more capable. Russia has the Buk M2/3's in service which is even better.
