US intervenes in Ukrainian offensive, by Alexey Nechaev, Andrey Rezchikov for VZGLYAD. 08.24.2023.
In the United States decided to name the main culprit of the failure of the Ukrainian "counterattack".
A series of publications were published in the Western press criticizing the Ukrainian counteroffensive. The main dissatisfaction boils down to the fact that the Armed Forces of Ukraine divided their forces in the southern and eastern directions, and did not form a powerful shock fist near Melitopol and Berdyansk. How will the tactical pattern of the Armed Forces of Ukraine change after this criticism, and what should Russia do if the enemy starts implementing a new approach?
During the counter-offensive, the Armed Forces of Ukraine divided their forces equally in the southern and eastern directions, but the United States does not agree with such tactics. The New York Times (NYT) writes about this , citing sources. As a result, significant forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are located in the area of Artemivsk and other cities of Donbass, and not near Melitopol and Berdyansk, which are much more important from a strategic point of view.
As a result, American specialists advised Ukraine to concentrate on advancing towards Melitopol and breaking through Russian minefields , even if the Ukrainians would lose more soldiers and equipment in the process. “Only a change of tactics and drastic steps can change the pace of the counteroffensive,” one official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The NYT gives other details of how the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine look in the eyes of NATO. In particular, on August 10, a video conference was held with the participation of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CNS) of the US Armed Forces, General Mark Milley, his British colleague Admiral Tony Radakin, and NATO Commander-in-Chief in Europe Christopher Cavoli, during which they urged the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny to concentrate forces on one sector of the front. Zaluzhny allegedly agreed.
“According to American military doctrine, the main efforts and resources should be directed to one direction, and only auxiliary forces should be left in other sectors of the front in order to protect themselves from a breakthrough and disperse enemy forces,” the NYT authors add. However, Ukraine does not use this tactic, they assure.
“Ukraine's constant attention to Artemivsk, where one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict has already unfolded, has baffled US intelligence and military officials. Ukraine has invested huge resources in the defense of Donbass, and President Volodymyr Zelensky does not want to give the impression that he is giving up on trying to regain lost territories. But American officials believe that politics should take a backseat, at least temporarily, to give way to military strategy.
The next problem of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the coming autumn and rainy weather: if the Ukrainians do not break through the Russian defensive lines in the coming weeks, then in the future the mud will make it difficult for them to advance. And an even bigger problem, the NYT notes, concerns the fact that the strike forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can simply run out of steam by the middle or end of September.
In parallel with this, criticism of the Armed Forces of Ukraine appeared on the pages of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). “According to all the canons of military science, the Ukrainian counteroffensive should not have been launched. For such an initiative, we need to have a force three times larger than the opponent, have an advantage in artillery and control in the air. None of this was observed, ”the WSJ quotes the words of one of the Ukrainian military.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to these publications, who on Wednesday rejected the idea of deploying troops from east to south. According to him, there are "approximately 200,000 Russian troops" in the east. “A couple of days, and (the Russians will take) Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, then they will go to Pavlograd, the Dnieper, cut off the banks. But we will not allow this, and let all the analysts of the world do not even count on it,” Zelensky said.
However, the problem is that among these "analysts", according to The New York Times, the names of Milli, Radakina and Cavoli appear, that is, the leading NATO military. According to experts, such audacity of Zelensky can play a cruel joke on him, because the West will not take responsibility for the failure of the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, even if it is the West that is to blame.
“The entire Ukrainian army is under the direct control of the United States. What the NYT writes is nonsense. The entire operation was prepared at NATO headquarters. And the recent meeting with the participation of Milli and Zaluzhny suggests that there was and could not be any initiative on the part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” military expert Alexei Leonkov points out.
Such articles in the Western press are an attempt by Washington to distance itself from the failure of the Ukrainian “counterattack,” the expert believes. “During the summer, the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit the same places, losing personnel and armored vehicles. This is the result of the implementation of the installation of the American command. They wanted to tie down our forces in the Donbass and Kharkiv region by making a breakthrough in the south to cut the land corridor with Crimea,” Leonkov recalled. -
But the plan failed because we outplayed the enemy.”
Military expert Mikhail Onufrienko agrees that the Armed Forces of Ukraine exactly carried out the orders of the United States to launch a counteroffensive in the Zaporozhye direction. Therefore, “the Americans are now pretending that they were not listened to in Kyiv, and are trying to blame all their failures on the Ukrainian command, creating informational noise.”
“And what is happening now in the Donbass, in the Artemovsk region, near Kupyansk, these are forced measures. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are sending reinforcements there to thwart our advance. Russian troops began to move forward, created a military foothold on the right bank of the Zherebets River north of Makeevka, reached the village of Sinkovka, and imposed hostilities. If the reserves of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had not been transferred there, now the battles would go for Kupyansk,” Onufrienko believes.
“The West is really trying to cover up its guilt for the failure of the counteroffensive. Yes, sometimes Zaluzhny tries to get away from NATO standards, but due to the lack of equipment, his plans are also impossible to implement. Therefore, attempts to revive the counter-offensive have not yet been successful,” adds Anatoly Matviychuk, a retired colonel and military expert.
According to Leonkov, now the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not have the opportunity to form a new shock fist. And the previous fist, which consisted of almost 12 brigades, did not cope with its tasks and could not really reach the first line of defense of the Russian Armed Forces. “The Ukrainian army failed to implement the plan that NATO came up with. They have neither weapons nor qualified personnel for this, ”the expert emphasizes.
If the Armed Forces of Ukraine nevertheless reduce their groupings of troops in the Donbass, standing there in a dead-end defense, then they will not be able to transfer the required number of troops to the south and achieve a result. Moreover, they will no longer be able to control the entire line of contact, and the Russian army will definitely take advantage of the gaps that have arisen.
“The layered defence was built by our troops because in some areas the enemy could have a sixfold advantage in manpower and armored vehicles. If the Armed Forces of Ukraine begin to transfer the most capable military units to the south, then they may not be able to hold a blank defense along the entire line of contact. Already now the line of their defense is being broken in the area of Kupyansk,” Leonkov points out.
Onufrienko is convinced that if the Armed Forces of Ukraine begin to transfer their forces from the Donbass to the Zaporozhye Front, then "we will start fighting for Kupyansk and go to Oskol - which means the tactical encirclement of Seversk." “In addition, the tactics and strategy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not changed, there is nothing new in their actions. If they cannot transfer troops, then they will have to retreat, ”the expert believes. In addition, according to Leonkov, the tactics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the use of small mobile groups did not justify itself.
“What they did last fall in the Kharkiv region is rather an exception to the rule. At that time, we did not have a continuous layered defense, a sufficient number of military units and an unlimited amount of ammunition. There was no clear coordinated interaction between military units. This is what the enemy took advantage of, ”the expert says.
When the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked the Kharkiv sector, they did not even count on such a result, it just so happened that entire areas of the area had no cover. “This was their only success, which they could not repeat during the counteroffensive. The NATO bloc has no solutions on how to break our line of defense. In any case, not yet. And for us, this is a big plus that we should take advantage of,” Leonkov summed up.
