Indonesia plans to buy 16 Su-30

Numbers will eventually reach close to 30 - nice number.

21/03/13 INDONESIA WILL BUY MORE FIGHTER "SUKHOI"

"Military Parity" . Indonesia plans to buy an additional batch of Russian fighters "Dry" and their own patrol boats built in the 15 billion dollar five-year plan to modernize the armed forces, said on Wednesday in the military of the country.

Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro (Purnomo Yusgiantoro) said that Indonesia intends to buy a squadron of "dry" and patrol boats.

He also warned the military delegates of the conference that the rapid increase in military spending and military build-up in the region could sow distrust and competition for energy resources.

"If it is not accompanied by greater transparency, which will increase the trust and confidence that it can turn into an arms race, which has a negative impact on peace and stability," he said.

Another official Indonesian military spokesman said that there are still plans to purchase 16 fighters "dry", 17 patrol boats, three light frigates and an unspecified number of tanks and missiles.

Indonesia also plans to upgrade the squadron of F -16 U.S. production. Indonesia already has more than 10 fighters "dry."

Last October, the Defense Ministry announced that planned to purchase 130 Leopard 2 tanks, the German company Rheinmetall AG for a total of $ 280 million.

Indonesia, a country of islands with key shipping routes and 54,700 km (34,000 miles) Coastlines also ordered three South Korean submarines to increase its fleet of submarines to five units.

Spending on national defense in 2012 amounted to 72.5 trillion rupees (7.54 billion dollars), which is 30% more than in 2011. It is expected that in 2013, the military budget will rise to 77.7 trillion rupiah.

    A little untimely.
They should wait until the results of the Indian investigation are finalised.
It could be that there is some fatal design flaw in the Kilo that requires a rethink/modernisation or even worse; it could be unavoidable in which case the Kilo would not be a desirable submarine to acquire.

    Huh?
Kilo submarines have been in service for decades with an excellent service record.

Customers (Russia, India, China, Algeria, Vietnam, Venezuela etc.) buy them because they are good and reliable and have had an excellent service record. So with one accident (which may end up being unrelated to the submarine) you want Navies to think otherwise? Perhaps you want them to go with new models with no reliability record?

Kilo subs never experienced similar accident in their 35 year old service. I doubt there are some technical problems with them and obviously so do Russians.

Yes you're right of course; it's a rather proven design.
Still the timing could be better though.

Indonesia Reveals Plan to Boost Defense

“We hope that by 2024 we will have eight squadrons of fighter aircraft,” Air Chief Marshal Ida Bagus Putu Dunia said on Wednesday after receiving six Russian-made Sukhoi SU-30 MK2 fighter aircraft. Each squadron is expected to consist of 16 Sukhoi jets.
They plan to have 128 fighters by 2024.

Not sure how accurate, but this article seems to suggest they want another squadron of 16 Sukhois in addition to the Su-27 and 30 already delivered. Probably the 128 number includes all platforms, Sukhois, F-16, KAI T-50 etc.

Who knows, maybe they will be the first customer for Su-35!

Sukhoi Company filed an application to participate in a tender issued by Indonesia
    Russian Aviaton » Tuesday March 31, 2015 15:04 MSK

Sukhoi Company filed an application to participate in a tender for delivery of fighters to Indonesian air forces, Lenta.ru reports with reference to the company’s press-service.

The model of the fighter offered by Russian company was not unveiled by the press-service.

It was reported earlier that Indonesia is going to put 16 F-5E/F Tiger II aircraft delivered from USA in 1980 out of operation. And the country is looking for a replacement for these jets. According to some sources, only two out of sixteen jets of the type are operational now.

In autumn 2014 after analysis of RFI (request for information) responses, Indonesian Ministry of Defense selected three finalists: Su-35 (Russia), F-16C/D block 52+ (USA) and JAS.39 Gripen (Sweden). The latter one is the favorite, according to sources close to Indonesian Ministry of Defense. At first Indonesia was also considering US F-15 Silent Eagle and F/A-18 Super Hornet, as well as French Dassault Rafale.

Today Indonesian air forces operate four types of Sukhoi fighters. In 2003 the country purchased two Su-27SK jets, in 2010 — three upgraded Su-27SKMs. In 2003 Indonesia placed an order for two Su-30MK jets and nine more Su-30MK2s were purchased in 2008 and 2011.
