A comment from a poster on ZH re the above photo. It is NEKO, post is nearly halfway down the thread.

IMPORTANT - I have downloaded and opened the second image shown (SyriaSatellite2.png) and examined it in Photoshop. I invite anyone else to do the same. Make a layer copy of one of the SU-305M jets shown and then move it to cover one of the other jets. Reduce transparency and zoom in, so you can compare the two, and you will see there are four pixel perfect copies super imposed onto one photo. Same reflections, same camoflage patterns, identical angles, they are pixel perfect. If you look at the white line that runs under the wings of the aircraft, you can even see a step where each layer copy was added. This photo is, without doubt, a FAKE. It would be interesting to know the source of this release, who has endorsed it and the motive behind it.

Not convinced, I see subtle differences. We're talking about 4 planes that are identical here, most people couldn't tell the difference if they had HD photos from the ground with the numbers blurred. The Su-30's going to look like "pixel perfect copies" from space.

If the photo is fake, then what do you guys suppose Russia really has for air coverage in Syria?

More rumours, this time Il-20 and Il-22. Wonder what next, MiG-31 Smile

Along with the 28 combat planes that have arrived at al-Assad International Airport via Iran hiding under Il-76 cargo planes last week, the Russian Air Force has deployed at least one Il-20 Coot surveillance plane to Syria.

Even though satellite imagery has not yet unveiled its presence on an apron at the airfield near Latakia, an Il-20 Coot spyplane has already arrived in Syria to reinforce the Russian contingent, according to one of our sources.

The Il-20 is an ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) platform: it is equipped with a wide array of antennas, IR (Infrared) and Optical sensors, a SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar) and satellite communication equipment for real-time data sharing, the aircraft is Russian Air Force’s premiere spyplane.

Russian Il-20s regularly perform long-range reconnaissance missions in the Baltic region, flying in international airspace with its transponder turned off; a standard practice for almost all ISR (Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance) aircraft. However, at least twice in the last couple of years Russian Coot spyplanes flying close to civilian airports or congested airways were involved in “air proximity” incidents: in March 2014, a SAS Boeing 737 with 132 people almost collided with an Il-20 Coot, about 50 miles to the southwest of Malmö, Sweden; in December 2014, a Canadair CRJ-200 from Cimber Airlines was involved in a near collision with an Il-20 halfway between Ystad, Sweden and Sassnitz, Germany.

In Syria, the aircraft will probably perform intelligence gathering missions, eavesdropping into IS militants communications, detecting their systems’ emissions to build an Electronic Order of Battle of ISIS in the region, and pinpointing their positions. And, as happened in northern Europe, unless their missions are coordinated, there is the risk of a close encounter with a US-led coalition aircraft involved in Operation Inherent Resolve.

As a side note, there is also a video coming from Syria showing what seems to be an Il-22 Coot-B flying at high altitude: this is an Airborne Command Post derivative of the Coot. Its presence in Syria has yet to be confirmed.

IMHO this should be in this thread not the 'News' thread as it is really about supplies to Syria. It is not 'news' in the sense that these ships form a regular shuttle service and pass through the Bosphorous every few days.

The 'news', if any this time, is as I posted in the other thread, that this ship seems to be unusually heavily loaded. The lower deck is Ro-Ro so can take most road vehicles and probably helicopters and Su-25 as well.

Yeah i agree on that one, i guess we should post only "BREAKING NEWS" there Smile. Yeah it is unusually heavy loaded, at least its upper deck seems to be stuffed.

"Food stuffs, medications, clothes, blankets, tents and other living essentials for refugees are being shipped to Syria along with automotive vehicles for civilian designation and military equipment, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Russian sustainment center specialists are rendering all necessary assistance in unloading the ships with humanitarian aid, TVZvezda reported.
The supplies are being promptly delivered on local vehicles to population centers including temporary refugee camps, each housing around 500 people."

They will need MiG-31s in future, but for now they need to augment their AD, anti-ship assets and air-superiority fighters.

Wish its true and its the upgraded IL-20M, its very much needed for the Russian deployment to sniff out all those Israeli, US and NATO stuffs.

That specific photo could be a PSed one....but that doesn't have to mean the earlier released images are also fake.

Iraq to share intelligence on IS with Russia, Iran and Syria

This actually means US-Iraqi joint (intel) operations are going to be passed to Syria, Iran, Russia as well. I wonder what US will respond like, perhaps with this competition they will finally give some proper air support to Iraqi army.

Do you think Russia will move military units/assets in Iraq as well? Difference is in Iraq you got some US troops, though not that many so they aren't 'in control' either.

"Russia, Iran, Iraq and Syria have agreed to establish a joint information center in Baghdad to coordinate their operations against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS) militants, according to sources.
“The main goal of the center will be gathering, processing and analyzing current information about the situation in the Middle East – primarily for fighting IS,” a military-diplomatic source told Russian news agencies on Saturday.

The information center in the Iraqi capital will be headed by an officer of one of the founding countries on a rotating basis. Rotation will take place every three months. According to the source, Iraq will run the center for the next three months. Russia, Iran, Iraq and Syria may also use the information center to coordinate anti-IS combat plans, the source said, adding that the agreement is a milestone for uniting the region’s countries in the war on terrorism – primarily on Islamic State militants. The Iraqi army’s joint operations command confirmed the agreement on Saturday, saying that it came with “increased Russian concern about the presence of thousands of terrorists from Russia undertaking criminal acts with Daesh [Islamic State],” Reuters reported."

This is probably maximum lvl of Russian involvement in Iraq.

And should not, atleast not now. Let the Yanks clean up Iraq which they would be more than willing coz of their involvement in bringing 'democracy' to Iraq.
Primary task at hand right now for Russia is strengthening Syria and fortifying its own position.

Personally, I don't have much hope of Russia conducting air strikes in Syria. Russia is no western country, no middle eastern country. Bombing in another country is simply not Russia's style. Since when has Russia ever carried out an air strike in another country? Never. Not even in Donbas when the coup regime shelled cities and killed thousands of civilians. I think tomorrow Putin will discuss having Assad resign and start a transitioning process in exchange for the west to drop some of the sanctions on Russia.
