Russian Warplanes Carry Out 41 Sorties Amid Palmyra Liberation

Russian warplanes carried out 41 sorties to support Syrian army's operation aimed at Palmyra's liberation, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

    http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160325/1036982344/russian-warplanes-palmyra.html

Russian military jets destroyed 146 terrorist targets over the past two days, the ministry said Friday in a daily bulletin.

"From Tuesday to Thursday, Russian Aerospace Forces' warplanes conducted 41 sorties to support the Syrian army's advance and launched strikes on Daesh militants near Palmyra in the province of Homs. Russian aviation destroyed 146 terrorist targets, including command centers, ammunition depots, artillery systems, tanks and automotive vehicles," Lt. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko said.

On Friday, the Syrian Army alongside the Desert Falcons regained control over the Palmyra Castle, a military source told Sputnik. Government troops and militia units have already taken control over all of the strategic heights in the area.

Daesh militants used the castle for sniper fire and mortar shelling of the heights controlled by the army.

The ancient ruins of Palmyra have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was seized by Daesh in middle-May 2015. Before leaving the city, the Syrian Army evacuated the majority of its residents and the most precious museum antiquities. After Daesh seized the city a number of ancient ruins and temples faced destruction.

Al-Nusra Front terrorists have kidnapped 12 civilians in the Syrian province of Hama for the participation in the country's reconciliation, Kuralenko said. Meanwhile, a preliminary agreement with one populated area in Hama has been reached over the past 24 hours.

"According to information received from local residents of the Hama province, al-Nusra Front terrorists kidnapped 12 locals for participation in the national reconciliation process."

According to the center, three people died and three others were wounded as a result of al-Nusra Front's shelling in the Idlib province. "Al-Nusra Front terrorists shelled the Al Fu'ah settlement in the Idlib province twice. As a result of the shelling, three people died and three more were wounded."

Airstrikes in the vicinity of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra destroyed the headquarters of two terrorist groups - Daesh and al-Nusra Front, state media reported on Sunday.

A total of 43 armed groups from the Syrian opposition have confirmed their participation in the Syrian ceasefire regime, Kuralenko said. Russian warplanes do not carry out airstrikes on Syrian opposition groups, participating in the truce, he emphasized.

The personnel of the Russian reconciliation center at the Hmeymim airbase delivered over 19 metric tons of humanitarian aid to settlements in three Syrian provinces in the past week.

The general stressed that the Russian personnel several times came under fire from militants during the deliveries.

The balance of probability is yes, the report last week was correct. It looked pretty likely at the time given the gear. RIP.

RIP. Very reminiscent of Ulus Kert days. Don't know about the airstrike his gear seemed too intact, although it may explain why there were approximately zero videos of the scum Snackbleating over his body.

Russian aviation group in Syria on March 20

Magazine «Jane's» in the article Jeremy Binnie «Analysis: Russian air group in Syria remains a powerful force» publishes made March 20, 2016 satellite image Hmeymim airbase, which rolled out the Russian aviation group in Syria. Photo taken six days after Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of the withdrawal of the Russian forces from Syria, confirms the reduction of the Russian aviation group on Hmeymim (in particular, removing from there all the 12 Su-25 attack aircraft), but suggests maintaining the core of deployed Russian aircraft forces.

According to the snapshot, to the airbase Hmeymim March 20 remained 12 Sukhoi Su-24M, four front-line bomber Su-34, three Su-30cm and three Su-35s (it is possible that one more fighter to every type and one Su-24M at the time of the shooting were in combat missions). Also Hmeymim there were 14 Russian helicopters, including two Mi-28N and two Ka-52.

Thus, during the period from March 15 to 20 in Russia Hmeymim flew three Su-24M, four Su-34 and 12 Su-25SM / UX, as well as four Mi-35M. In return for Hmeymim it was delivered at least two helicopters Mi-28N and two Ka-52.

In the picture can also be seen basing on Hmeymim unmanned aerial apparatatov «outpost» (IAI Searcher Mk 2). For their maintenance hangar was built easy-cover, visible in the lower left part of the image. According to Jane's, basing UAVs "Outpost" on Hmeymim noted with January 15, 2016.

Recall that at the beginning of the Russian military operation in Syria, 30 September 2015 at the airbase aviation group consisted of 32 Hmeymim warplanes VKS Russia - four Su-30cm, four Su-34, Su-24M 12 and 12 Su-25SM. Four Su-34 bombers were deployed to Hmeymim December 6, 2015, four Su-35s were deployed to 30 January 2016, one bomber Su-24M (replace downed by the Turks) was transferred in December 2015 and four additional bomber Su -24M - transferred 27 February 2016.
