the Russian forces began planning work for the construction of a helipad in the city of Qamishli in the "security square" area.

Turkey and Russia agreed to preserve the status-quo in Syria's Idlib region during a meeting on Wednesday between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, a senior Turkish official told Middle East Eye.

Erdogan met Putin in the Russian resort city of Sochi amid an uptick in attacks in Idlib where Russian warplanes have targeted opposition strongholds close to Turkish military bases.

In March 2020, Turkey and Russia reached a ceasefire agreement that turned Idlib into a "de-escalation zone", but that deal has come under strain in recent weeks with air and ground bombardments of rebel-held positions.

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar warned Moscow earlier this week that air strikes on opposition-held areas were killing civilians and radicalising locals.

"We expect Russia to uphold the deals we made," he said.

More than three million Syrian refugees are stuck in Idlib and there are fears that further Syrian and Russian attacks could push them into Turkish territory where public sentiment has hardened against them.

Earlier this week, Turkish officials told multiple news agencies that Erdogan would be pressing Putin on Syria, especially on Idlib and attacks against Turkish controlled areas by the Syrian Kurdish YPG.

Turkey sees the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), with which it has been locked in a deadly war for three decades.

"There is no change in Idlib. We will preserve the status-quo there," the senior Turkish official told MEE after the meeting.

It was not immediately clear whether Turkey agreed to any concessions to preserve the current understanding in Idlib.

"The steps we take together regarding Syria carry great importance. The peace there is dependent on Turkey-Russia ties," Erdogan told Putin at the start of their talks.

Erdogan did not take his ministers to Sochi, only bringing his senior advisor Ibrahim Kalin, communications chief Fahrettin Altun and intel chief Hakan Fidan.

Erdogan and the Russian president met without others present and it is believed they discussed the possible second-round purchase of Russian-made S-400s, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, and Libya.

In an apparent reference to the US, Erdogan told Putin he wanted to discuss further defence cooperation regardless of objections from Washington.

"At the UNGA [UN General Assembly], the typical persons especially asked us about certain issues specifically of course," Erdogan told Putin.

"We gave them the necessary response anyway. It is not possible for us to turn back from the steps we took. I especially believe this: it is of great importance for us to continue by strengthening Turkey-Russia ties every day."

Late last year, the US imposed sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defence system and ejected Ankara from the Nato-led F-35 programme to develop advanced fighter jets.

Russia entered a REAL war on jihadi terror in the Syrian Arab Republic that answered a request from the LEGAL government in Damascus.

Today, the Russian Aerospace Forces are actively bombing the city of Maaret Misrin, the Jabal Ansariya ridge and the area to the west of Aleppo.

The Syrian Army is launching artillery strikes on the settlements of Fatira, Kensefra and Sfuhen on the Chebel-Zawiya line.

Russian planes bombed on the outskirts of the city of Al-Ziyar, northwest of Hama. 

Idlib reports on the use by the Syrian army (or the Russian Armed Forces) of operational-tactical surface-to-ground missiles.

I miss the time when progress was being made and map updates were everyday. It's been stagnant for long time. Let me hope progress gets made soon. And Syria and Russia finally achieve total liberation

I suppose Idlib has to be first. Pundits out there seem to be now working on the basis that all hell will let loose at the end of the month, to allow those who wish to leave the last chance saloon.

I suspect that the Turks across the north will be the toughest to eject, especially if the 5000 turn up from Libya. The US will go after the others.

They should have plenty of EW aircraft they could bounce signals off to control drones at long ranges and view video feeds to decide whether to set off explosives or disable the explosives (ie if militants or kids pick it up respectively).

He doesn´t have to. If the drone is brought down the self-destruction mode is activated. Then the drone waits for the evil doers to come closer... Like the Su-25 pilot who blew himself and some takfiris up with a hand grenade.
