There are a crowd of pro-westerners jumping on the band wagon of "This will invoke article 5!".Waiting for the dust to settle once again.

This is going to be a disaster for Russia. 20,000 civilians with automatic weapons taking up arms. How is Russia ever going to subdue this hostile population. Should have done this in 2014 where there would have been zero resistance. Untold are putting up more of a fight than expected.

The Russian MoD says the Kyiv is blockaded from the west after Russian Airborne forces, presumably that arrived from a ground advance from Belarus, linked up with VDV forces that arrived in Hostomel

- base is 25 kms away from the border of Lugansk region occupied by the Ukrainian army
- about 40-50 kms away from where that Ukrainian unit got ambushed crossing the border a week back
- missile was the Tochka SS21 (replaced by Iskandler in the Russian army) max range around 120 kms
- Ukraine has 1 brigade (12-18 TEL), 1 battalion reported to have been sent to the Donbas in the April build-up
- missile would have had to have been fired from northern Lugansk at a 80-120 km distance
- nearest S400 would be to the west of Rostov about 200 kms away away
- would not be enough time to react
- unit destroyed afterwards according to reports

Civilians with automatic weapons cease to be civilians the moment they pick up those weapons
I have a feeling when things get real they will run home quicker than they did running to get armed
A legitimate military target is an object, structure, individual, or entity that is considered to be a valid target for attack by belligerent forces according to the law of war during an armed conflict.
The general rule is that only those people fighting you are legitimate targets of attack. Those who are not fighting should not be attacked as this would violate their human rights. The Geneva Convention lays down that civilians are not to be subject to attack.
Who is, and who is not a combatant?
While there is general agreement that only combatants are legitimate targets, the issue of who actually is a combatant is much less clear.
Definitely combatants
members of military forces
members of guerrilla forces (even though not in uniform)
anyone who takes up arms in the conflict, other than in direct self-defence
